That last one made me laugh, My girl friend from Ketchikan said something that many people said was true about Alaska. What's the dating like in Alaska? She said..." The odds are good but the goods are odd."

I was born in Fairbanks. Raised in Tanana, a remote Native village on the Yukon River. Our family spent summers in Denali Park developing our homestead property there. We are a 3-generation family business in Denali. Denali Grizzly Bear Resort is starting our 57th year in business in Denali. Tim, if you ever want to camp with us, I again extend a welcome to you, buddy. Free of charge. I love your videos. You are a great ambassador for our awesome State.

Yeah if you think so, go on up and see for yourself lol. These are true and legit reasons why there ain't even a million people in a place, larger than many countries of the world but if you think he's just being coy, go ahead and pack your bags hahaha
@Friscorockhead
@Friscorockhead 6 ай бұрын
I don't think so. I don't think you can compare this to other parts of the country where people are flocking to certain places, and the locals try to prevent new people from moving there. The stuff he said is real, and he probably understated a lot of it. Alaska gets romanticized in countless videos on youtube, and while it's an amazing place, the truth is that it has an abnormally high suicide rate because of how hard it is to live there. It's perfect for some people, but it's definitely not for most people.

@@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism absolutely. I live in northern Michigan. We typically get really harsh winters but nothing like Alaska. Still, I hear people say how bad they struggle with winter here. We just went over a month without seeing the sun once. It's been dark and cloudy everyday, but at least it gets light during the day. The lack of sunshine has never bothered me, but being in total darkness for an extended period of time would drive me crazy. I definitely understand how it makes people depressed.

Thanks for sharing Tim. Another great video. I arrived in Alaska back in 1982, migrated south in 2013. Spent 28 of those years in Fairbanks. Worked hard. Played hard, cuz you can as a young man summer or winter. I had most of the toys. Snow machine, Jet ski and 4 wheeler. Didn’t get a boat because my good friend had one of which I helped maintain. It was a homemade wooden boat. 28’ flat bottom with a 115 fir propulsion. I did find a soul mate. Got married. 2 kids and so on. Heating oil went from .99 up to 5.00 a gallon during my 28 years in Fairbanks. The wife was born in Fairbanks. Her and the kids wanted out. It was getting to expensive and everybody was tired of the cold. I was getting tired of hauling water 3 to 4 times a week. There’s a lot of work involved to live in harsh environments. I worked in subzero conditions every year. One year it was so cold, -60, that the jets didn’t fly but our good ole dc6’s did. No warm cab on the forklifts either. Lots of fun times and great memories. In Idaho now. Take care and stay safe. The change up of your content is great.

I remember one year when we were in Juneau, I got bored after dinner and started mowing the lawn. In Juneau it rains somewhere around 200 days per year. And that summer was particularly wet so I hadn't mowed the lawn in months. It was dry so I went out and mowed the lawn. Then I noticed my neighbor walking toward me. I thought he might want me to do his lawn too. Instead, he yelled at me. It was 11:30PM and they were trying to sleep. Lucky for me it was already the weekend.

Man hasn't been able to destroy it yet , due to it's harshness ( daily earthquakes, avalanches, wild animals, ice jam or terrencial rains that cause flooding ( reason for braided rivers). Serious minus temps along withTim's reasons. Love how he takes us all over Alaska. Makes my bucket list longer of of places to visit in this amazingly awesome state , so fortunate to call home. 😊

Good job of putting the viewer on the edge of their chairs as we get an idea of what it's like being on top of clear ice with a deep lake below. I grew up in Ancorage starting in 1953. Landed at Elmendorf since the Anchorage airport wasn't yet ready for commercial carriers. Alaska has the highest per capita consumption of alcohol, or did back in the Fifties and Sixties. I've been depressed my whole life and the cold and dreariness of life there probably played it's part. Skiing was great. Educaton was excellent. High quality teachers. Most professionals there are a cut above, generally. Great place to learn to fly since conditions are challenging.

I worked on some military bases in the winter in Alaska. Spent most of the time in Denali area. Frickin love Alaska but it was wild when propane was not dispensable from the cold. It’s crazy how quickly things become unmanageable

Hey Tim, I Love all your videos my Friend. I'm 75 years old and will never make it up your way, so I love the way you describe everything and take us all on your many adventures. You did a Great job on this video, you told us about things that most of us don't think about. Also you do a number of thing that I would never undertake. I live on Owensboro, Kentucky and to see you riding your bike on that big lake unnerves me. Down here it don't get cold enough to freeze them over very often unless they are real small, and on occasion you here about someone breaking thru and dieing. But that is the way of life and everyone has to respect their where abort's for sure. Again Thanks for what you do my Friend and Take care. God bless & Godspeed... Later. Jerry

@@johninalaska9563 Yes I Know my Friend but due to health reasons is why I said that. I just had another Back surgery in December and I have a very hard time being on my feet and walking. But some day I may have a Chance to visit your Great state which I would like nothing more. But until that time I just have to be content to watch everything on line and Dream. God bless & Godspeed my friend and enjoy what time we all have left... Jerry.

#11 - black flies please take your fans on a trip to yukon and up the dempster hwy - now all the way to the ocean - the dempster can be an adventure, and more scenic than the haul road - maybe go during the northern arts festival in inuvik look fwd to each video - LOVE the far north - we've spent more than 10 summer/falls up there in a pop-up truck camper - not nearly as cozy as your truck house but a great contrast with SE arizona as a 78yr old granny, i feel like i'd like to feed you homemade soup and knit you warm mittens thanks so much for the videos

As a west Aussie currently going through a heatwave, dry weather, fire risks, also lots of deadly creatures, housing crisis and the cost of living being high this video shows that some things can be similar but the rest a stark contrast! I do hope one day I can visit Alaska, your videos help me get through my awful summers.

Yes, listen to him. I lived in the Anchorage area for 15 years and while I had a lot of great adventures, I got burned out on the weather, the traffic and the crime. I tell people that it’s the best place to visit that I ever lived. It can be a very depressing place and if it isn’t snowing it’s probably raining. Think long and hard before moving to Alaska and make sure you have an exit strategy. I’ve known people who’ve bailed out after their first endless winter.

The interior and northern Alaska are really cold…I would not say the southern coast is so cold. Winter in parts of the lower 48 can be as cold or colder. People I know who have lived in both places say the hardest thing is the extended darkness in the winter.

My biggest issue is how small it actually is community/town wise. If you burn bridges, you can't help but run into those same people again...also in the summer if you are working and its a nice day you can get into a manic state of missing out on one of the few nice days a year, which can lead to more stress since nice weather days are so few. I'd say Alaska is a nice place if you have freedom from that. Just wanted to add that I no longer live there just visit during the holidays.

Sounds a lot like where I live! Just more bears and wild life and more rural. I live 69° north in Norway, so having the sun rise in the winter sounds awesome. We go about 2 months without seeing the sun at all. And in the summer the sun doesn't set for 2 months. It's a dream of mine to visit Alaska some day.

Alaska is a daunting, beautiful place. My wife and I rode our Honda Goldwing trike from Houston, Texas to Fairbanks, Alaska back in 2017. We rode a 2,000 mile loop in Alaska while we were there. Then we rode the ferry from Skagway down to Prince Rupert, BC and back home. This took place in early June. Along with Yukon Territory, it is the most mesmerizing place we have ever been. But living there would be tough!

I visited Alaska solo last year, and my impressions were that Alaska is for those who think Colorado isn't outdoorsy enough, that having a car and repairing a car needs its own savings account, and that even for someone born and raised there, when those signs of autumn come around, it triggers some depression because winter is on its way. I spend a lot of time on islands and Alaska definitely feels the same, its beautiful and remote, and what you have access to is all you have to work with. It's an amazing, unique place that feels different than anyplace I've ever been, and I'd love to go back to visit, and maybe live for a season, but I don't know about more than that. Thanks for your insight.

I have always wanted to go to Alaska ever since I was a kid. Grew up in the North East, but my family moved to the deep south when I was a teen. Lucky, if we get 1 wewk of cold weather a year ! Some of us are born loving snow and ice, and im one of them. Appreciate your video. ~Sweating in South East Texas 😊

I am a cold weather person but two of your reasons I know for me are a deal breaker, the long nights and rain. The third reason is the endless sausage party can grow old. I was told once while sking a remote western ski town there was two things I needed to bring, my own money and women because both were hard to find.
