Today, I am going to be talking about Dream. He’s a popular faceless Minecraft youtuber who currently has over 21 million subscribers. His videos gets 10s of millions of views on average and he’s known for his speedruns and hunter videos. However, there’s a dark side to dreams success that’s been swept under the rug. For one dream, recently admitted to cheating during his Minecraft speedruns back in October 2020 after initially lying about it. In addition, some of his followers are so intense they are literally known as Dream stans. They revere him so much that they attempt to cancel, dox, and harass his detractors. This is the dark side of Dream.

Well, here's my rant I guess Dream is a figure I believe who falls under pressure too easily. There are many scenarios where he doesn't seem to stand his ground and cracks easily. In the incident where people tried to call him a racist for using the word "drugs" in a tweet, he made a ridiculously poor response. Personally, I found this situation to be pathetic and unneeded. If you ask me, the person who made him apologize is the racist because they were associating drugs with black people. Regardless, he made his "apology," which if you ask me, it stained his image that I don't believe was under threat. He apologized for something he didn't need to apologize for. One of the most common issues I see is debate over the current definition of stan with the main three being: "stalker fan," "overobsessive fan," and "super fan." This seems to make the definition no longer concrete. With this in mind, let me explain why I oblige to "stalker fan." Eminem's song was released in 2000. The word itself was recognized by the dictionary in 2017. This means that anyone who's been around during that period of time would've been likely subjected to the meaning "stalker fan." What I see as a problem is that "stalker fan" to "super fan" comes off as too drastic. The term itself is only 21 years old; the word itself is four years old. Compare this to the word nostalgia. It was first used in the late 1600s as a diagnosis for extreme homesickness. Its more modern definition means a desire for a past of peace of mind. The reason this worked was that it didn't fit in one's average lifespan. Compare 400 years to 21 years. Alongside a more subjective point, the main character in "stan" would lead me to avoid calling a super fan a stan. With this in mind, I thought of what I'd call a stalker hater. For this, I combined the German word for hate, "hass," and stalker to make "stasser." Moving on, one of the common issues people have with Dream is how he sees the issue or, in a better term, doesn't really. When #canceldreamstans was trending, Dream made a sarcastic statement beginning with, "I'm so disappointed in this community," followed by saying it was just (paraphrased) "teenage girls having fun and enjoying a content creator." This was a major understatement of a response. The whole situation began when a user was doxxed and sent death threats for saying how he doesn't believe Dream deserves his success, not "teenage girls having fun." This came off to me as inconsiderate and a refusal to acknowledge the problem. Back in July of 2020, a user by the name of Merd, formally known as Drem, submitted a speedrun that was proven fake. Dream brought to light the dishonesty in the video, which resulted in stans attacking him. From my understanding, Merd has actually admitted he faked the July run, so the hate also seems unfair and wrong. When #canceldreamstans was trending, Merd uploaded a montage to Twitter of the hate comments he's received because of the situation. The reason I mention this is simply that Dream hasn't done much about it. The most I've seen was a comment that was somewhat empathetic, but he hasn't done much with the drama. Again, another situation that he seemed to sweep under the rug. The second thing I'd like to mention is the NSFW content and his response to it as well. He said he's fine with the sexualization, but I personally find it hard to believe. Note, this is more or less subjective as it surrounds my understanding of consent. "Did he cheat or not," is what people wanted. Dream streamed his response to fireb0rn's video that was somewhat skeptical of whether or not Dream cheated by accident. It honestly came off as an attempt of gatekeeping and discrediting for one main reason. HE DIDN'T NEED TO FRICKING STREAM IT. All he could've done was make a simple comment on the video and be done with it. There was no need to stream it. Albeit, the accidental cheating part seemed anecdotal after all he went through; it was a plausible explanation at least. However, the need to stream a response to skepticism to it felt overly unnecessary. One thing I've seen him try to do is "protect the good fans." This is pointless for two reasons. Crossfire is inevitable regardless of the scale, and bad fans don't see themselves negatively. It's unavoidable for a good and respectable fan to experience negativity for simply being a fan. The reality is that the creator cannot defend every single one and be there for every single one. It's unfortunate, but it's inevitable. Secondly, saying you're "only referring to the good fans," is meaningless. The bad fans don't see themselves as bad fans; therefore, they do these negative actions with their tainted mentality being self-observed as "good fan mentality." Another point I'll bring up is his "it's only a minority of the fanbase" argument. My retort to that is this. So? It has proven to be a minority large enough to cause problems. It doesn't matter if the good outweighs the bad when the bad still causes problems. The minority argument is completely invalid. I know it seems I've been critical on stans, and yes, I am. However, there are situations where I defend Dream in. The kittens thing just seemed to be bad timing with memes surrounding Discord moderators, and while I don't agree with his statement, it's his opinion that had no harm. The people trying to call him a racist many times are ironically racists themselves. People shouldn't be digging up some old clips that weren't even him. Spreading false images of him is morally wrong. Trying to call him a predator over a slightly dirty joke is sad. Calling him an ableist for not believing the r word is a slur is downright pathetic. The list can go on for a while. My overall belief is anything associating with stalking behavior is what causes the problems. Stans or stalker fans obsess, devote too much loyalty, love for the wrong reasons, harass in his name, and defend blindly to the point of fault. They, in a way, can be argued as "Yandere-like." Stassers or stalker haters spend so much time trying to defame, harass those who support him, and much more, are more similar to the stans than they think. I'll end it with a scale for the situation. 4 - Stan/Stalker Fan. These people stalk the creators social media. It goes to the point of an unhealthy parasocial relationship. They attack any who oppose the creator. Severities can happen such as doxxing, ddos's, harassment, and stalking might happen 3 - Super Fan/Big Fan. These people go a bit more than a fan, but they avoid the wrongful extent of stans. They mainly donate semi frequently and support the creator. 2 - Fan. They simply enjoy the content and might even donate in support. 1 - Neutral. They have no real favor or distaste for the creator. 2 - Disliker. They don't enjoy the content. 3 - Hater. While not exactly harsh hatred, they would go to further lengths to express their disapproval. 4 - Stasser/Stalker Hater. These behave similarly to stans, but the actions are done as spite and harassment to the creator. I'm not going to chew his ass or kiss it. I was scrolling on the recommended and saw one of Dreams earlier manhunts, so I rewatched it and at the end I realized I was sad, knowing that we were never going recapture that same magic, and seeing the person Dream has become, I really don’t know if there’s any magic left

I think Dream, himself is FINALLY, starting to show some small signs of personal growth and development over the last few months. He came clean about the speedrunning controversy when he didn't need to, is starting to follow more minority individuals to learn about discrimination and prejudice in the community, and even posted his first boundaries list. These are all really small but important steps for Dream to grow as an individual and a person. I think the honeymoon phase of his rise to stardom is wearing off at long last and he is looking more critically into his actions. I am not excusing any of his behavior because it was selfish, ignorant, belligerent, reckless, and many other negative traits. All I'm saying is that I think the magic can come back if Dream finally grows and matures are a person. He is showing the earliest of signs in doing so. I'll hold out hope for a little while yet because people can grow and change. We can maybe have that magic back again. It might be a little different because he went through this, but I think he'll be better off because of it as long as he learns his lesson.

Why can’t the stans get help. Normal fans don’t like them, people don’t like them, I don’t like them. If Dream fucks up then he does. I feel bad to be a fan of his videos at times. I hope he does more Minecraft unsolved. Dream seems like a nice guy but he needs some pointers and a cleanup of his fan base. I really hope the internet doesn't go back to hating Minecraft, the last thing I want is for 2016 to repeat itself, Minecraft is my favorite game of all time and I genuinely don't want to be told "OMG a MCYT stan!!!" if I ever say that I like Minecraft. The only thing I and many others can hope for, is that now that some countries have less restrictions when it comes to going out, people will spend less time on Twitter and I also hope that the community matures a little or perhaps a new game blows up and Minecraft Stans move to that game, either way I just miss early 2019 when Minecraft was getting popular again.
