El Salvador's Nayib Bukele has now suspended the rule of law in his country for 18 months, during which time more than 70,000 people have been rounded up and imprisoned without trial in the naming of stopping crime. While Bukele's approval rating has skyrocketed, many families of the incarcerated paint a much grimmer picture of suspended civil liberties and indefinite detention. TRNN contributor Mike Fox joins Rattling the Bars for a look at El Salvador's permanent state of exception and the growing signs of a return to fascism in the region.

Controlling the "maras" is just the first layer of Bukele's plan. He wants to integrate Central America, under his command and the military equipment he is buying will be used to control the whole region. The new prisons are not made to hold the maras but to do it with all his possible political antagonists. Bukele is the speaking puppet but there is a worldwide power elite behind him. As a US citizen I am so glad they built this prison. I wish we could get a prison like this in the USA. The USA hasn't been able to reform the majority of their criminals. Maybe the US can send the MS13 back to El Salvador, to the new prison. MS13 has taken over New York and are a major gang problem in Los Angeles. They are probably trying to cut the head off the snake right away so that society can go back to normal as fast as possible, so that investment can flow into the country and the country can improve economically....

I am not a fan of 'strong-man states' but unfortunately El Salvador needs a Bukuele figure to turn this country around. Criminal gangs have become so entrenched in the country that the gangs have more fire power and political clout than the elected officials. El Salvador has tried the nice, progressive and democratic approach during the time the FMLN was able to win government but things have continued to spiral downwards. Rooting out evil requires some drastic action and Bukuele is doing what is necessary to restore order as nothing else can be done until this primary aim is accomplished, otherwise it is just more of the same chaos and millions of salvadoreans exiting the country any way they can because life has become so intolerable. The interview is interesting but i feel like Bukuele is just being painted as a brutal dictator when in fact he is more like a surgeon performing a difficult operation requiring major excising of cancerous portions. I have no doubt that some innocent people may be getting caught in the dragnet but the alternative is worse as many more innocent people will be killed or taken in and recruited by the gangs. I married a Salvadorean and my heart bleeds for the country and while I cheered with so many when the FMLN was elected, time has only shown that the divisive nature of politics requires an independent figure like Bukuele to take control of a country that was basically falling out of control. During Bukuele's tenure as the mayor of San Salvador, he did support many progressive causes and as mentioned in the interview, he was a FMLN member that was basically drummed out because he knew the country needed a more interventionist approach as things were not really improving under that party's leadership. Time will obviously be the judge but i believe, like many Salvadoreans, he is necessary. In any case, I am not sure why running as president more than once would mean he is a dictator as many democratic countries such as my own (Canada) places no constitutional restrictions on the number of terms a leader can run. I mean, hey, if the people want and like him, why shouldn't he be able to run? As long as he is elected in a free election without fraud, i don't really have a problem with that.

People mix up authoritarianism with fascism in my mind. Stalin was socialism with authoritarianism. It wound up bastardizing the meaning of the word communism. USA and Germany were rival fascist nations. One authoritarian and one so called democratic. I am not sure there are concrete agreed upon definitions for these words though. definitions of some of these. If I’m wrong provide me lectures or readings to further explore these topics.

Bukele extremely authoritarian.. no at all, he was elected by the majority of our people in 2019 and the majority of the people elected in 2021 for a new congress breaking the two party system that for decades did nothing to solve any problems like gang violence, immigration etc.. the people wanted it that way so be it. Democractic republics are suppose to be about,by the people for the people.

I’m glad someone is finally highlighting the problem in El Salvador. El Salvador’s gang problems began when Clinton decided in 1996 to deport all gangs imprisoned in the U.S. without informing the governments in Central America. Gangs that were created in the US and had never existed in Central America prior to the 90s. People in Central America never saw the wave of gang members coming from the US until it had spread like cancer, and when the government reacted it was already too late for them to control the problem. People in El Salvador were obviously desperate for a solution, since the previous government had failed them. Salvadorians were desperate, and fascism that targets anyone who simply looks, resembles or acts like a gang member seem like the right thing to do. However, Bukele’s extremism is dangerous for Democracy and minority groups. The scariest part is that Bukele is a genius in spreading propaganda and people’s desperation and trauma, makes them fall for this type of propaganda so easily.

The real problem here is when governments can label any innocent and peaceful person as a terrorist, JUST-BECAUSE; because they feel like it. This is being done here in the U.S. to anyone going against the narrative. Its important to expose the real and truthful problem. Apparently Buakele is doing a good job El Salvadorians tell me. Maybe Colombia can do the same and regain their country again as well. Too bad americans (U.S.) are too distracted, cowardly, and misinformed to do this.

El Salvador was a mess, here in the US crime is down big time compared to the 90s and this type of thing will be used to go against dissidents, leftists, activists, and mainly the poor.

Solid points, but ultimately Salvadorans voted in Bukele, so whatever happens its on them... If they end up like Venezuela then we can make fun later! If Bukele & his troupe can deal with the falsely accused prisoners & give them their day in court asap, I think they got something good cooking there. Certain intangibles make certain tactics work, results may vary in Guatemala, Honduras & Costa Rica compared to El Salvador. Actually, we could use a Bukele like mayor in CHICAGO who fights crime & corruption, Batman style! Yet, as a victim of false accusations myself, it really sucked going thru the court system & took 1.5yrs/5figures in USD to clear my name here in a liberal US city! Had surveillance video as proof, but they didn't care so there's no "quick & speedy trial" here in the US either, they wanted to drag it out, woke judge did favors & made every attempt to convict me on the narrative & not the truth! Also, I was in El Salvador in April this year, I was walking around with cameras for my channel vlogs + in suit&tie on few occasions. I was never in any fear, never came across any gangs, the authorities were helpful & more polite the US police, the people had good vibes too & majority are out working hard to earn income & not worried about being extorted or murdered by gangs & get away with it! USA we need to fix our own country before telling how others can govern theirs...

Salvador went over the edge with violence. There's a bunch of cultural factors for this that are unique to the region, amongst them the popularization of "Cartel Culture" via social media that has glorified that lifestyle amongst young, warrior age men. The result was predictable. So now we see what amounts to an over-correction in what amounts to an emergency situation, which comes from wide popular support because regular people are sick of it. But lets not let any of that stop us from continuing to see the world through American-vision. (another form of cultural colonialism)

Cartel and militant culture affect america too. There were kids in America who during the ISIS situation in middle east when to the middle east cause they thought it was cool. There is boys who joined gangs cause they thought it was cool. The web is international. FYI many of these right wing politicians in other countries know who Trump is. Many are vary similar to Trump. The previous president of Brazil said he himself was similar to Trump if I remember correctly. He literally when to Florida after he lost to Lula like Trump did when he lost to Biden. Some of these right wing people have ties from their family to Nazi Germany. Analysing politics abound isn't colonialism. I would say couping and NATO expansion is colonialism. What happened in Peru a year or two ago was american colonialism. Also the US will never stop a right wing government in South America. Many South America countries in the 60's-80's did Holocaust type stuff. The US didn't stop it. The US is ok with human rights violations as long as america and international companies are happy.

And as far as national leaders "know who Trump is"....he was the President of the United States. It's kinda your job to know that as a national leader. That doesn't exist in El Salvador, criminals are detested by the youth El Salvador was a fascist country in the past and was an axis ally during WW2 that is it's saving grave because the military and police are loyal to the national agenda where in the Hispanic countries of more democratic traditions police and military take bribes or are scared by threats The problem in El Salvador was poverty and destruction after the civil war and the importation of USA culture

I would like to know his sources about the supposedly innocent civilians in jail, there isn't that many so it shouldn't be too complicated, lots of information taht he gives need to be fact checked before taking it as true but one thing I agree is that people is dumb enough to think his plan can be replicated, people in Mexico thinking you can put the cartel army or United States in jail is hilarious. Bukele is "Liberal Conservative" which puts him in the Far-right group, he is the same as most Salvadorans, economically liberal, supporting libertarian ideas like Bitcoin and Bitcoin city without any taxes, and 0% tax on technological companies nationwide but, also very religious and conservative with our moral values, pro-family, pro-life and anti-LGTB ideas.
