It's even worse for wrestlers. While it's gotten better with the advent of mixed martial arts, a lot of times once you've won a gold medal in the Olympics in wrestling you are done.

Would have liked to see Mr Adams a Olympic level judoka with good ground work nea waza Vs one of the Gracie's in the 80s early 90s don't think Royce would have been able to throw Neil or do anything on the ground he hadn't already seen or trained since he was a young boy.. Adams had a great armbar finish world class .. MMA seen Ronda rousey with her Olympic judo.. and the sambo practitioners that can use leg grabs ect .. which was the judo and still legal throws when Neil was world champion

I don't want to be the bringer of bad news, but judo is an art that completely encompasses every muscle and joint in your body, which will make it very tough. The good news is that the philosophy and mentality is such within judo, that your trainer will be very understanding, and you should absolutely give it a try.

I got back to judo last year at age 48 and will probably get my black belt this year. It's never too late to start!! Maybe you won't compete, but you can just practice judo for your health and have fun learning some cool throwing techniques. By the way, I'm 49 now and am practicing judo, aikido and karate at the same time!!! LOL

Many words of wisdom. I feel that you have caught Kano's philosophy well. Judo shouldn't overemphasize the sports aspect. It is just as much training to the betterment of yourself and society, and when your elite competition days comes to an end, you focus on giving back to the art that put you in that position.

Thank you for creating this channel. Your story resonates with a lot of us. We can't predict life's curve balls. We just have to adjust, then keep moving, only after reflection we realize that terrible experience was necessary to be the person I am today. Thank you for sharing. I appreciate the work you do. You are not only a judo ambassador but a grappling ambassador. One of the best on youtube. A lot KZbinrs show moves/ techniques. Your videos stand out because of the care you put into the research. Your ideas really pushed my own thinking with grappling.

Chadi we all have a history. In our life's journey it is often filled with joy, happiness, sorrow, grief, and heart ache. It is the mastery of experiences that defines us. The letting go of that which no longer serves us, is the true hallmark of emotional maturity. So too in the martial combat world. You Sir are an admirable human being. Chadi you have much to teach and impart. Not only philosophy of Judo but it's life application. It is those qualities, and experience s that have brought you thus far. I am grateful for the wisdom that you have imparted. God bless you and your family! And may you continue on your journey of self discovery.

Nice video, Chadi. It reminded me that sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I hadn't stopped practicing judo 32 years ago when I entered college because I had a good level of judo and competed a lot. I get myself imagining how it would have been if I had trained at a better dojo and even blame my parents for not putting me in a better place to practice, but it wasn't their fault I couldn't go to a better dojo and it was way better that I dedicated myself to my studies, which led me to do a master´s degree in Japan in Japanese and I'm learning judo and aikido again after decades. I had my first competition in Japan last month and finished in third despite having a torn knee ligament at the time of the competition, but I am motivated and hope to get my black belt in judo and aikido this year. Keep up the good work!!

The idea with the ice cafe existed also in Aachen. A local soccer star began, then boxer took the famous place .. A lot of boxers however had their bar, coffeyeria, pub etc. to have personal contact to people of their style. ("Rocky" guided a pizzeria - you know the movie). I heard that you had thd trauma of a lost street fight. I think that can happen to anybody but it is not the biggest problem. Even Bluming said that he has to remember special situations (Amsterdam, Wallen - rarely). If you become older Kyudo can substitute judo because the mental aspct is here more visible.

Oss!

Excellent topic. Honestly it's true for any profession where you pour your all into it - including some ordinary careers. It's important to develop a balanced life to ensure you'll have something and some people fulfilling to transition to -- because nothing like this lasts forever, certainly not a martial arts competition career at high levels.

When martial arts become competitive, they become parts of sports and athletic activities at the highest levels of human performance but judo like many martial arts is not just a physical activity; it is not just a sport. Maybe, beside psychotherapy to deal with loss and mourning the life of a high level competitive athlete, one could remember the "Do" part of judo. Not a simple idea but one that could be very helpful.

A lot of elite military guys go through this feeling of being supermen, being on top of the world, living an incredible life that no one would believe nor understand except for those they've served with, then either injury or retirement casts them down into a slow motion, mind numbing boring, mundane, existence which can be unbearable for some resulting in suicide, self destructive behavior and loss of family. It's like going from being superman to Clark Kent, as Chadi says, and you can never go back to the high speed, low drag, life you had. Never again.

You should know that Kyudo and Kendo (and Iaido) are headed normally by the Japanese association. There you get a completely different education and mentality tha in in Dutch Budo schools. However you don't really learn fighting anymore. This is the difference to the Samurai school which was more than a Zen school or just a fight club. The Samurai don't exist anymore since the late 19th century. There is however a Book of the famous Heki school in Kyudo. But even this is no more Samurai. And the tradition was even more stopped after WWII which ended with Nagasaki. In Britain there is a good Zen Kyudo school. (Besides this there is the legend of the Shaolin monastery. But who of us lives in a monastery? Zen is an option, but it can't substitute a monastery - today however very peaceful. No more one shot = one life.) I think a Dan in judo can help in Kyudo.

I am a Nidan Judo Black Belt as well as a Painter Artist and I have been practicing both for as long as I remember and I find that fine arts and martial arts compliment each other because Judo taught me discipline, consistency, rigour, determination, perseverance and resilience which are the necessary ingredients for being a Painter Artist or anything else a person wants to be and Judo is a school of life a way of life an Art a philosophical and a spiritual journey so it is definitely more than a sport or a physical athletic activity and Judo teaches flexibility and adaptability inside and outside the Tatami that if used in life in general it could help a person be more balanced, and another benefit of Judo is the social aspect of it because through it a person can meet great people and one of them is the Great Judoka Neil Adams that I met on a few seminars he did in Birmingham back in the days and of course yourself as well by discovering your KZbin channel with its content that is interesting in terms of Judo Education, keep up the very good work
