I moved to LA in 2009. Before that, I used to read so many women’s health magazines where they’d interview female celebrities about how they maintained their figures. Eating smaller portions, pilates twice a week, etc. Yet I never could look like them, not even close. Once I moved and starting working in LA I realized that’s all a lie. It’s eating disorder city y’all. Back then it was more anorexia, these days it’s much more orthorexia. Knowing what’s behind the curtain both makes me mad and makes me feel relieved. There was never anything wrong with my body or health, I just ate more than an apple and a handful of almonds a day. 🤷‍♀️

My middle school had one of those tunnels! Palms middle school is split up on either sides of Palms ave and they put a tunnel so kids could cross and get to class safely. Safe to say, it definitely got flooded when it rained, kids would set off stink bombs in it, and the electricity went out occasionally in it. 😅

So the parrots come from two things. One is a lot of parrots were supposedly released in the 90s from Busch Gardens (this big botanical park). As a kid I once saw macaws in my backyard. Second there is a species from Mexico (little gold and green parakeets) that has since found a habitat in LA. They were endangered due to a drought and began flocking North. Here they're thriving so that's pretty cool. Also a thing with the tunnels: in Van Nuys, there's a bridge over a major street to help students cross the road. Charles Schulz made original drawings of the Peanuts characters to decorate the bridge. They were restored recently. Hey I love LA and I appreciate that this didn't turn into "LA is the worst" ramble.

I could see people getting peacocks as pets and then being sick of them. We had them at our uni (in Perth, Aus) and they're really lovely majestic things. Until they decide it's time to talk to each other and they're so bloody loud. Or it's mating season (around exam time, naturally) and they won't shut up. Or they'd just decide that, no, the lecture hall is where they want to be right now. What are you going to do? Move them? They were originally "gifted" to the university in the 70s. The university now manages a population of them in conjunction with the local zoo and a petting zoo (obviously the chicks don't stay on campus).
