As someone who’s played sports all my life, and has loved sports manga since I discovered the medium; Hearing your analysis really opened my eyes to why these stories are so captivating to me. It even got me thinking about my experiences in sports and it made me a little emotional. Fantastic video!

Another dark side of sports I'd like to point out is the potential for toxic relationships between coaching bodies and participants. If you don't see results there's the very real possibility for being blamed as the issue, and it's comically easy for someone passionate to accept that as reality. Keep in mind for the majority of people, sports is a money sink, and they'll never see a penny being made. Sadly that devotion with a sport, and the comradery you get from being apart of a team can turn parasitic, and can easily mess you up in the long run because of potential injuries.

You should really watch "Ping Pong the Animation" and "Welcome to the Ballroom". Ping Pong the Animation is, within its 12 episode runtime, probably a perfect anime and not only is the ending great, but it also leaves you hyped; The character who most strongly resembles the attributes you mentioned in the video is probably Dragon. And I recommend Welcome to the Ballroom mainly because it's a change from the more stereotypical sports and because I find the character(Masami Kugimiya), who resembles these "dark (sports) psychology" features the most, incredibly interesting and refreshingly unique. Though he is a minor part of the show.

My most favorite sports manga by far is still One Outs by the same mangaka who made fcking Liar Game so you could imagine how insane it was. I was never good at sports so i found it very interesting how Tokuchi could find all the loopholes in baseball. Almost like disrespecting the sport by making it all about the money, but then again aren't we all greedy to some extent? We get exploited, we exploit others, we exploit ourselves. This video has been a wild ride. Seeing Slam Dunk and Hajime no Ippo was a nostalgia bomb and thank you for reminding me of that! My first vid of you was cautionary tale, hope the algorithm picks you up real quick!

A very high quality video. Much props to the work you put into it, its touched the part of me that's always wonders why what I loved to engage in turned into something so stressful and anxious to me as a person even though going back and living those innate joys it gave me is what made me want to stay.

In order to become a monster in whatever you do, especially in sports, you have to dedicate your life to your activity. I just recently left jiujitsu because I am currently in college and work a part-time job. I couldn't sleep well and pushed my body to train. It only worsened my health and made me take a lot of coffee and naps during the day. Finding the energy to train, study and work became harsh. Sometimes you have to let go of something for a moment. I am sure I will come back to train jiujitsu but right now the objectives I planned to reach in the sport and that version of me that is a monster in jiujitsu, I just can't achieve them for the moment and I will only slowly drain myself into exhaustion.
@rastyisanerd3686Ай бұрын
Great video. But, when you mentioned Chihayafuru I thought for sure you were going to speak about Shinobou's character. I thought the back story were her training couch prevents her from playing Karuta with anyone near her age so she would stop "going easy on them" really fit the theme of the dark side of sports. Her coach prevented her making any friends, saying "the lonelier she gets the stronger she becomes", thereby cursing her into a life where she couldn't make meaningful connections with others and making Karuta something she only plays because she's good at it, not because it's something she loves (though Shinobou still ended up loving it of course). I really liked this aspect of her character especially since certain professional athletes have described similar stories where their parents/coaches overworked them and made them practice beyond their will.

first, amazing video but I was really hoping for a mention of Kuroko when the topic of "monsters" came up 😂 in my youth basketball was pretty much my entire life from elementary to late in high school i never expected to enjoy a basketball anime but I watched/read kuroko and it was one of the most impactful pieces of media ive ever seen. it came at a perfect time for me as well because as a young adult I had began to wonder if the sort of "life changing media" experience was something I had grown out of but thankfully it showed me that was not the case. anyway I love that series with all my soul so this video was something that really got to me because I've experienced everything you brought up. looking forward to your next project brother, take care

I do wonder if there’s a story similar to mine in any form of animanga, or with other people, and if so let me know, recently maybe a year or year in a half ago I tried out for a nearby schools soccer team, seeing as mine didn’t have one, I survived the conditioning somehow ( 😂 ) but when it was time for us to actually play with the ball I realized just how terrible I was in comparison to the absolute beasts I happened to share the field with, whether it came down to physicality and me being outran or outlasted, or pure skill or talent and me being out dribbled or spun around, by the end of the practices which we had around 2-3 a week and this lasted for around 2-3 months ( I’m sorry my memory is so shit ) I found myself only scoring one fluke of a goal and one fluke of an assist, I felt worthless, I had big dreams of going pro and maybe even playing for another country, but how could I do that if I couldn’t even beat the high schoolers surrounding and drowning me in my own pool of uselessness, by the times tryouts came around I put on a disaster class of a performance, only a few touches on the ball, most of which I lost possession, yet when substitutions happened my coach kept me in, I felt like he was mocking me, like my mistakes were only there to let others shine, by the time I got home I cried for the first time in years, I essentially broke down realizing my shoddy dreams of being something I never could’ve been shattered in front of me. It took me a while to pick myself back up, I had mental problems before so I’m used to going through bad times and getting better, still dosent mean that didn’t hurt like hell though.
