I really like that all the siblings (except Ben unless you want to count "being dead" as a contributor) do things that eventually lead to the apocalypse. Luther of course locks Vanya up, Diego drives her away right into Leonard's arms after Hazel and Cha-cha attacks them at the mansion, Allison makes her forget her powers when they're kids and then tries to use them on her again in a highly volatile moment, Klaus threw away Reginald's notes so Leonard could find them, Five rewound time from the good timeline where everything seemed to be on the way to working out to the one where it doesn't and Vanya goes Dark Phoenix and destroys the moon.

@TheNerdySimulation4 жыл бұрын
I haven't heard many other people talk about this so I will: When Five reverts time to try and properly redo things is literally what causes this whole thing to occur. Everyone was about to be happy/content or start taking steps in the right direction towards undoing the damage Hargreaves inflicted upon them, but Five's decision literally stops Vanya from figuring out she is being manipulated before her powers got out of hand. Granted, I'm not saying this should have happened but the character flaw that Five thinks he knows better than anyone else is most prominent in this moment. He genuinely believes (sometimes for good reason) that he is the only one capable of preventing the apocalypse and it is that hubris that brings about the doom anyways. Man I am so in love with Umbrella Academy!
@Saxinful4 жыл бұрын

@rockyadams28254 жыл бұрын
I completely forgot about that
@TheNerdySimulation4 жыл бұрын
@@KikiKagePro Also note that even after the rewind there is still a significant change: Leonard doesn't end up at the Academy. The only clue Five has to go off of when he first arrives in the future was the prosthetic eye, which was obviously meant to belong to Leonard. I would guess most people assumed that the Time Travel rules in this story were meant to be "You can't ACTUALLY change history" but this fact proves otherwise. I would guess the apocalypse was still caused by Vanya in the initial timeline (before Five comes back at all) but it could stand to reason that it wasn't caused by the moon being destroyed and was instead just her powers getting out of hand.

My favorite scene out of any tv-series that I have watched thus far is Allison's decision to take that gun and use the sound of a gunshot to knock Vanya out as opposed to straight-up kill her like many media would do. At this point, after all the media showcasing that the incredibly powerful and (possibly) irredeemable character needs to be put down, TUA arguably made the HARDER choice of trying to redeem Vanya/stop this from happening in the first place. This scene also speaks of the sisterly love that IS still there, even under all of the dirt that is their shared past and their respective mistakes. TUA did a really good job showcasing that. Even after Allison is attacked in such a way, she still smiles and appears emotional and proud of Vanya's place as the first chair and neither Diego nor Klaus wanted to see her in that isolation chamber even while knowing what had happened to Allison. And it doesn't come completely out of nowhere either, their relationship is complex and at times toxic, but it's believable. I'm really excited to see what they'll be doing with this in season 2.
@priboltao4 жыл бұрын
I don't even have anything to say, you covered everything lmao. I love this show and I love Vanya so much. I do however have a lenghty theory on Vanya and the rain that I wrote down about a year ago and it sounds a bit stupid now that I re-read it but bear with me for a sec if you like. Remember the moment when they all learn of Reginald’s death, and Vanya is passing by a TV store and she sees the news? She mutters “Dad”. It starts raining. THAT’S WHEN IT HIT ME. It rains when Vanya is upset. Moreso, It rains when Vanya has feelings. Of course I didn’t remember this particular moment throughout the series, a lot happens. But almost everytime it rains, it’s when Vanya is upset. When she learns of her father’s passing. When they are in the garden disposing his ashes. The show hinted us on her powers long before it actually showed us what she could do. Then of course, it rains when she fights her family, and when she is on that date with Wonderbread and things go south. But the rain was there from the beginning, indicating for us when her emotions surpassed the action of the drugs she was taking in the first episodes. But wait! There is more! Here’s where I go on a stretch. Reginald created the Umbrella Academy and named it after that Umbrella Company he bought when he arrived from whatever planet he came from. Supposedly. But what if Reginald knew all this? They infer towards the end that maybe he knew the apocalypse was coming and the real reason he brought the academy together was to stop the apocalypse. But what if he knew? What if he realized it when Vanya was little that she was actually the spark to end everything? Then maybe that’s why he thought it was best to try and shut her off (if that’s the case, terrible move, since his neglect is what set her off in the first place). But what if the real reason he founded the academy was to stop her? What if he noticed the storm when she was upset and that’s why he put the academy together, excluding her, and named them “The Umbrella Academy” - because their purpose was to stop the storm - stop her? Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

My husband loves action shows. I love moody emotional pieces. This is the most bonding show we have ever found. Yeah others try, but this show has a good balance. And I love them all. I relate to Luther the most because I’m the oldest and had abusive parents. Luther shutting her in a sound proof room makes sense. Do what your dad taught you because “what else can we do?” Ugh. I could go on forever. This show is so good.

I appreciate that you (sort of) pointed out how the third X-Men film totally shafted Rogue; making her get the cure only compounded the feelings she'd had of being cursed with her power instead of validating that she was worthy of good things and her power was part of her. Anna Paquin was such a great pick for that character and they totally wasted her!
@alim.9801 Жыл бұрын
Dude they so did!! Anna is a great actor and I can't believe they made that decision for the 3rd movie. They really messed with Rogue's character imo compared to the comics. At least Last Stand has some awesome action but man some of the character choices just feel so off. And like they could have grappled with Rogue's feelings/angst over her powers without her lining up first to get the cure, esp with how they implied she ultimately made the decision bc of Bobby 🙃

I adored Umbrella Academy and as an autistic adult was struck by how much Vanya's story parallels how autistic children are commonly viewed and treated by educational and medical institutions, and thereby often by their caregivers as well. Having our experience of the world systematically disregarded and denied in favor of conversion therapies and chemical restraints for when the 'therapies' fail to teach dissociation and repression, and instead push us past our limits and into violent meltdowns rather than giving us the space and understanding to develop things like healthy coping mechanisms, emotional regulation, the ability to recognize and advocate for our needs, or even to recognize and understand our strengths.

Yes! I’m glad someone else saw this particular parallel! I’ve said that The Umbrella Academy season 1 is to the Fox Dark Phoenix movies what The Incredibles movies are to the Fox Fantastic 4 movies. They more accurately adapt the best elements of the source material, carry greater emotional weight, have more fleshed out characters with realistic relationships and understandable motivations. Yet they’re also not afraid to touch on the crazier, fun, weird elements of comics and be lighthearted once in a while. Oh, and the villains are better.

Okay, people are going to disagree with me about this, but I wasn't super sad when Pogo died. He did seem to care about them to a certain degree, but his loyalty to their father came before his love for them.

2:16 in that sense Hargreeves as alot more in comun with "The Chief" from Doom Patrol than Xavier, in some of doom patrol more recent comics the guy is straight up the bad guy

Man, watching Ellen Page kiss a man was weirdly uncomfortable. Like watching clips of people kissing their dogs. Also, X3 was not *that* bad. At the time it was, but then Dark Phoenix came. Then again, Dark Phoenix had to do a bunch of reshoots because it was too similar to Captain Marvel. Okay, this comment has gone too long on X-men and the video wasn't even about it. I need you to make videos about X-men! Please!
