Thanks for this Mark! I received mine for Christmas and was then a little bewildered by the settings esp how to get anything useful from pitch shifting. Your video was very helpful in showcasing HOW one might use those settings. I think less is more with the knob adjustment on this pedal, there’s magic in the smallest tweaks sometimes. I plan to setup my exp pedal to get that awesome movement ability and I’m waiting on a Meris Polymoon to arrive and be its mini pedal board friend. Keep up the good work, you’re my fave channel!

I've had the OG Dark Star for a while; my stereo one is arriving Monday! Some thoughts: my favorite settings for the pitch knobs: just a hair up on one and down on the other, to add some thickness. Or down an octave or two on one side and just a hair up on the other. Pitching up more than a hair gets pretty harsh...though now with the filter I'll be doing that a lot more often for synth-ish sounds. The filter was a great add, likewise the overdrive. Love the way that lag + multiply + low decay makes a sort of diffuse echo! As always, great demo, full of useful ideas! Thank you!

Great review, as always. The manual does seem to suggest that the pitch shifting is quantized though

It is! To 12TET (12 Tone Equal Temperament), so semitones, with +/- 30 cents detuning on the unison octave, from what I can gleam. It just runs through all the possible intervals, sot just the ‘perfect’ ones (4ths and 5ths). Some will still produce dissonant harmonies, depending on the key you are playing in, but treat it as a fun exploration in basic harmony theory, and a great ear tracing and (hopefully) implicit theory training exercise!

Killer review as always, Mark! I have a Quad Cortex and a MOOD MKII for ambient, shoegaze-ish, and CCM. I could see this thing being an awesome addition for that, but would you recommend something else if I only have room for one more medium sized pedal on my board?

For any situation where you want to run this in stereo you need TRS to dual TS patch cables. Those can be bespoke cables or just Y shaped adapters.

All other pedals present, bypassed or otherwise, are denoted both for transparency and for better context on how I get the tones in the intro songs which tend to be much more of a “finished product” tonally.
