There were scammers about then and it is possible that 2 women posed as teachers with a boarding school. The problem is she told her sister her son was going to France to be educated there with his father. Don't underestimate how illegitimate people - even little children- were seen back then. They really were seen as a visible sign - a living embodiment- of the mother's shame. Less than human themselves. They weren't just a sign of a stigma they were a stigma themselves. It is no coincidence that he term 'bastard' once meaning illegitimate has also now come to more usually mean an unpleasant person. His mother might have felt that by killing him she was not only removing a financial inconvenience but that she was literally wiping away a stain on her character to make a fresh beginning. She may have cared for her child - she did visit him weekly - but there was no reason he couldn't have lived with her- she worked but she was after all living with her sister's family. - This was not like the women who handed their babies to 'Baby Farmers' as they had live in jobs as maids etc. The reason he wasn't living with them must have been because HE was seen as shameful to them, a stain on the family. Her sister presumably had children but little Manfred did not live or even mix with them.
@irena45455 жыл бұрын
This is a weird one. I did some quick reading on it, and I am not convinced that Louise did it. Her lover didn't mind the child, the nanny was happy to have him, the sister had offered to help out financially but it was never needed because Louise was doing well for herself, so why would she? And, why would she be so stupid as to let people see her with the child? She really may have been conned - in fact, the situation instantly reminded me about that other video, about a woman who poised as a nanny for single mothers only to get some coin from them but she murdered the babies instead. Louise would have been stupid not to have checked on the institution in person but on the other hand, the idea of someone murdering a child only to get the "fee" is so abominable that such a thing simply may not have crossed her mind and she thought that she could go and check on Manfred later on the adress they had given her later on.
@matthewstorer82363 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with you. If she in fact was guilty? She likely had Susan Smith Syndrome. What bothers me most about this case is the lack of evidence. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously poor. When people try to remember details from a month ago at some insignificant time, their minds tend to create details. Especially when coaxed by police officials. This woman was hung purely on circumstantial evidence. The murder of Manfred was disgusting as well as the "justice" that followed.

Odd she killed him when he was 3 and she was 35 that means she has him pretty late in life by the standards of the time most women back then were married by about 20 or 21 if not several years younger. By the time she had him she would have been considered an old maid. Makes me seriously wonder who Manfred's dad was and the circumstances around his birth and if that had much to do with her reasons for killing him.
@mirandagoldstine85483 жыл бұрын
True. Perhaps Manfred’s father decided he didn’t need to pay for an illegitimate child and Louise saw her future disintegrating.

@hkazu63 Жыл бұрын
That’s not actually true. It’s a popular myth that women would marry as early as possible in the era, but that is born from the fact that women had such little societal standing that the supposed “ideal life” was to wed young and have children as soon as possible, based heavily on the literature of the time. In actuality, it was not uncommon for women to be single into their thirties, and oftentimes, they would want to build finances for their families whilst working as governesses or nurses or the like. Look at women like the Bronte sisters, who lived a solid 50 years before this story; Emily and Anne passed unwed aged 30 and 29, whilst Charlotte married and fell pregnant in her mid-30s.
@Harpeia3 жыл бұрын
An eerie resemblance to the recent events involving Casey Anthony. It's one of the more excellent doors into human psychology, mothers committing crimes against their children. I wonder how many similar criminal deeds occurred in history and what string of events made them possible. A good amount of circumstances between these two definitely match.

Intriguing! I read more about this case on Murderpedia and, though I think she did kill Manfred as he was a bit of a nuisance to her lifestyle, there certainly seems to be room for a bit of doubt about her guilt.
@hkazu63 Жыл бұрын
I have that feeling that no matter what, she should have actually been acquitted. There is reasonable doubt for her guilt and that is effectively how it should be; if there is doubt to the conviction, then you should vote to acquit. While it may be hard to stomach for those who believe her guilt, it is the correct course of justice, to try and prevent any possible miscarriage of justice. At the very least, I think imprisonment should have been selected over capital punishment, since if she was in fact innocent, they would have put to death an innocent woman.

Actually, an eyewitness is the least reliable form of identification. I first heard about that on Oprah many years ago. The topic had to do with law and evidence, etc. They had a man run into the audience and snatch a woman's purse, then run out. I can't remember exactly, but there was only 1 or 2 people who even came close to the actual description of the man. There's been studies done on it, with the same results. Jacob Erick It just goes to show you no amount of education can give a person the moral compass we should all try and follow. Her son just didn’t fit into the lifestyle she wished to have. I have a feeling the bond a parent should have wasn’t present in this case. She never had that relationship with her son and what we consider to be a horrific act wasn’t as difficult for her to carry out as it normally would be for a mother. So very tragic and sad!

@@TheSwords99 People have kids thinking it's easy ,but then not so much if the kids are colic or they also have to get up at all times of the night and have to change diapers all the time. Young people sometimes don't think it through and are not responsible enough. She couldn't handle it because she had someone else doing all the work. But to leave a child dead in a restroom? That's sick and also stupid. She was crazy to begin with.
@lheurerosa30415 жыл бұрын
The argument that 'she wasn't used to having a child around' and/or 'just lost it' IMO doesn't cut it otherwise one could justify that every child that goes to daycare (which is, unfortunately more common now a days) could have potentially murderous parents "because they are used to caring for them every day"...just doesn't cut it. She must have been seriously mentally and/or emotionally ill to do such a horrific act and in such a way.

@Lorie3365 жыл бұрын
I half believe her and half don't. I mean what's the motive? She could have left him with the nanny, but maybe there was a better opportunity for him to have a better education. Every parent wants their child to do better than them. Maybe those two women conned her seeing as maybe they thought she had money because she was well educated, but naive. It's plausible and she may not have remembered what she ate at the restaurant. I mean really how many of us can recall what we are two days ago let alone maybe a week ago. That's trivial at best to use that in court. Sometimes we may not remember our arrival times either. It just seems fishy how they charged her without looking into anyone else, I get it because she was last seen with him, but not sure what to believe. I really want to believe she didn't do it because I don't see a real motive especially when her lover had no problem with her having a child. Why would she kill him when it sounded like she adored him? This just baffles me. I know there are parents out there that have murdered their children, but they have all had a reason, bad reasons of course, but this case there was no reason for it. This was senseless and that poor little boy, my heart as a mother bleeds for him. Breaks my heart.

This sort of crime happens even today. It sounds so similar to other cases in which the child doesn’t fit into the parents desired lifestyle and so the child is discarded like a piece of trash! I believe the jury got it right! I know I’m not the only one thinking why the heck Louise just didn’t leave her son with the lady who cared deeply for him for 3 years?! I don’t believe she ever formed a proper bond with him since his birth. I also think Louise wanted to present herself in a more grand light and her reputation could have been damaged if anyone knew how little time she really spent with her son. Not to mention his biological father wasn’t really in the picture. Louise didn’t want to keep paying for the needs of her son and the time it takes to raise a child properly. She wanted to live carefree and never have to consider what it would take to raise her son in the future again. So heart breaking!

I was so conflicted listening to this story. After 3 rounds, all of the evidence, times of attendants', merchants, etc and the time she was last seen with her child compared to the coroner's reports and no evidence aiding her story or the two caregivers, I feel like she did do it. I feel like perhaps Manfred never settled out from being distressed about leaving Ms Gentle. All of Louise's efforts to pacify him failed and she may have accidentally or intentionally suffocated the boy in attempt to hush him. She seems too intelligent to have just randomly given her son to two women in the park in hopes if a great education. She didn't have that as a strain to worry about: she chose to work, lived rent free and Manfred was alleged to have his expenses taken care of by his father. She was a governess, she could have just taught him until a later age. What I don't understand is why wasn't the father questioned to back up Louise's story? On the other hand, I don't feel like her bond is an overtly strong one, so maybe she just got illl with him while he was upset. There was no pressure to disturb her current situation for him...why? I'm still all over the place. I'm tired.
@jameshogan6142 Жыл бұрын
I know what you mean. It is head wrecking. I badly want to believe she was innocent because relative to the period in history she was in a good place. She had a respectful reasonably paid position as a governess, could afford the child's keep and had the support of her family via free accommodation. Why did she not continue on for another year or two when her son could have been enrolled in a school near his Nurse's home? However, the inconsistencies in her story cast doubt on her innocence and as you say why were the witnesses who claim to have seen the boy with the two women and also the child's father not questioned in court?

I don’t think the mother guilt was 100% definitive. She had no reason to kill her own child! If she didn’t want him to get in the way of her love life, she could have abandoned him with Gentle! They should have established more reasonable doubt with those witnesses who saw 2 women with a child who didn’t want to be with them. RIP little boy.

She was guilty. Last one seen with child. Probably had no attachment to son as Mrs. Gentle the one who raised him from 2 months old until after 3rd birthday. She had a younger man she wanted future with, child could be hinderance (back then seems to be common). Nothing happened for 3 yrs UNTIL this young man.She didn't like paying for his keep. She lied about father wanting to school child in France. Obviously lied about other school. If wanted other school by ladies she could have told Mrs. Gentle. She lied twice about what she ate at restaurant. Restaurant workers correct - it is she who lied. Their testimonies should have stood.

It's scary that someone like you might be on a Jury one day. 1. The young man said the child was not an issue, 2. She was getting financial help and didn't seem to have an issue with money at all. Did you miss that while watching the video? Pay attention much? Lying doesn't make a person a murderer.
@ItsJustLisa4 жыл бұрын
@@virginiasolomon9352, who said she was getting any kind of child support? The video didn’t say that Manfred’s father paid anything. He probably disappeared completely when he learned he’d knocked her up. This woman was 36 years old, never married, had found a boy toy that she liked, and had an inconvenient 3yo son. Hell, she would have been considered a spinster at 33 when she had him! She probably could have given him to either of her sisters to raise as their own and he was their flesh and blood. This woman showed no maternal inclinations at all. So yeah, all signs point to her getting rid of the weight holding her back, specifically a weight of probably 33-40 pounds and 3 years old.

I did look this up and it is also under miscarriage of justice , so maybe she was not guilty of anything. Maybe she just wanted a little bit more for her child than she could give him and was taken advantage of. There were people who took advantage of women who had babies out of wedlock. They take the babies, kill them, and still get the mother to pay for their care. It happened, maybe she ran into someone who ran one of them. The truth died with her but was she really guilty of anything.

I really don't believe Louise's story. She told Manfred's caretaker, Miss Gentle, that he was going to live with a relative in France, but told authorities she had turned the boy over to a Mrs Browning, who was supposedly starting a school. Why lie? I don't think her excuse is plausible at all. There was no receipt for the money, which is odd since she supposedly paid a deposit for a year of schooling. The address of the school was also fictitious. I understand about baby farming, but Louise's handling of this is not believable in the least. Before you send your child to a school supposedly run by two women you barely know, you need to at least check the school out. There were cases of baby farming in the newspapers, so you would think that Louise would exercise at least some caution. That is, of course, assuming she is telling the truth, which I do not. The black shawl that Manfred's body was wrapped in was identified by a storekeeper as one he had sold to Louise, whom he remembered. She was a beautiful woman with a distinctive voice per one account. Manfred's clothes were found in the waiting room at Brighton station, but his body was found at Broad Green Station. The child was last seen alive at Brighton station. I do not think Ellen Rees was mistaken about Louise's presence at Brighton station. She had seen Louise over the period of about four hours and had actually spoken to her several times. She was precise regarding the times because Louise was concerned about catching the train. I could go on, but I think you get the idea. I understand that innocent people have been executed or sentenced to lengthy prison terms for murder - Jessie McLachlan, Oscar Slater, George Stinney, Joe Arridy, etc. - but this is not one of those cases.
