I think Bob was a complete idiot to do what he did. Murder because of jealousy is never justified however. Then I wondered why his relatives fled with him. That seemed strange.

GOOOOOLLLLLLEEEEEE! THAT WAS A DOOZY !!! MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!! OH DADDY, HERE IS YOUR TRUSTY JACK KNIFE BACK , I FEL EVER SO MUCH BETTER NOW !! Apparently Bob's wandering eyeballs both fell into total alignment that night, but he was never able to close both at the same time, ever again...even whilst asleep. 😅😅

A sensible outcome, at the end of the day. Funny how public pressure had an effect on these sentences, in these days. You'd think the public would have been ignored!

It's is never a good idea to kill someone, but that Narcissa was certainly asking for it. Kate's husband is as much to blame. He was humiliating Kate and she really did not have a lot of recourse to make it stop. And, it seems that she was pregnant at the time, too. Narcissa was definitely a threat to her marriage that in those days meant economic stability for a woman, too. There were not a lot of jobs out there at the time for women. So, I think that oommuting the sentence was probably fair, but she did need more time in prison for a murder.

Good for Kate. She was able to bring up her child, and 5 more. People can only be pushed so far, and they break. I hope her husband stopped spending time with other women. Interesting case, showing how society truly valued marriage.

These comments are funny! And don’t get me wrong I agree with a lot of them. But if this same scenario were done today many would hop on here and accuse everyone agreeing with the governor and feeling sorry for Kate as victim blaming. If you are going to provoke another man’s wife - all bets are off. You don’t know the emotional response of people in duress. Many wouldn’t have stabbed and slashed but unless you know that 100% - leave peoples’ husbands alone. She married a weak idiot anyway. The victim could have found someone better.

what a great story and still sad for someone had to loose a life for another to gain a life. I am thinking the husband was trying to be polite with the assumed mistress and the assumed mistress was the reason all the rumors started in the first place. Weather she was jealous or just mean spirited, she paid the price not to tell lies. that is assuming she was the one starting the rumors in the first place. We will never know but makes a good script for drama movie.

Narcissa had something coming but not death. I live in Georgia. When 2 ladies have a beef between them one usually beats the other silly and she wishes she was dead than live with the humiliation. In some cases, double humiliation.

I'm not mad at how this turned out. Bob learned his lesson, that conniving, husband-stealing ho got her comeuppance, Kate got a reasonable punishment, and then went on to live a relatively long life. All's well that ends well.

This entire situation could have been avoided if the husband had not so disrespected his wife, and he’s fortunate that blade didn’t end up where it rightfully belonged.

@@BriefCaseOfficial Hi there ! Thank you for your exceptional work. And a super thank you for answering me! Well, what I wanted to say was this: at 2:05 in the video, we see a picture of Katherine Hamrick (Southern), and in this picture she is truly a beautiful woman. But, we're talking about the 1870s. In those days photos were very rare, and normally taken of famous or wealthy people. Sooo - I believe what we are seeing at 2:05 is ONE ARTIST'S rendering of what Katherine looked like - very optimistic indeed. Even Robert looks very handsome in the picture. However, looking up other artists' drawings of these two on Internet, they do not appear as attractive.......and I'm wondering how we can know WHICH artist's rendering of a person of that period is closest to reality. Since your work has given you lots of experience in this area, I'd love to hear your opinion. P.S. - I confess that my doubt comes from the fact that if Katherine had really been such a gorgeous lady, I doubt that Robert would have given ol' Narcissus Cowart even a first dance, much less a second one ! 😂😂 Kind Regards, and keep up the great work !

I can understand Kate's fury at her husband and Narcissa rubbing her face in it at the party. But murder? The only good thing I see in this story is that Kate's action seems to have made her husband realise that he loved his wife and that he'd been a fool. Having a baby between escape and trial saved her life I think. Good one, Brief Case. Thank you!!

"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned..." I am glad that the governor commuted Kates' sentence. While murder is not to be condoned, this situation occurred as a result of an emotional reaction of a deeply hurt person. As the doctor testified, Kates was also having diminished psychological state as a result of seizure. Thank you, BC. Another fascinating case:).
