The movie wasn't great but I thought it was supposed to be a continuation of the series. Ka is a wheel afterall. Roland's journey won't happen the same way every time. Maybe this was just a different journey all together. By looking at it this way, the movie becomes watchable. Not great, but watchable.

I literally spend my teenage years waiting for these books to be completed. Can remember how my heart was racing when I saw the Wizard of Glass on the book store. Then waited years for the next book. After reading the whole series several times, now I am back here today watching this interview. I think the story become more meaningful for me as I had to wait years between the Wastelands and Wizard of Glass, then wait for Wolves of the Calhalla while reading other connected books in between them, finding clues and references to the Dark Tower. I feel it became part of my life, and it still is; I may even read the whole thing again, may read backwards to have fun with it :) . Time really is a wheel.

As wild as it sounds, the way in which King is "written into" The Dark Tower, the narration style of the final book (how King narrates some sections as though he is "looking down on" the characters as the story plays out) and the fact that he himself often gives "less than certain" answers regarding a solid understanding of the Dark Tower and the characters in it (i.e., The connection between Walter, Marten and the Man in Black, Dandelo, Pennywise and Mordred being much the same type of creature, as well as the ambiguity of what happens to Patrick Danville at the very end) leaves one to wonder if all the shit he described in books 6 and 7 actually happened to him and he is merely "following the song of the Turtle" and writing out subconscious memories/visions, and whether he is "Gan" of this world! Lol such amazingly thought-provoking concepts within this series and King's works as a whole.

I picked up the Dark Tower Companion by Bev when I decided to finish the series, and it was a great resource for helping me organize everything that I needed to know heading into the final leg of my journey. Even though I somewhat disagreed with his justifications for what happened in book 7 (particularly with regards to the fate of Flagg and the Crimson King), he nonetheless had some great insight into the characters and story. Yes. I remember waiting for Wizard after HS graduation. I was working in North Conway, NH. Wizatd and Glass had been out for months. I instantly recognized his voice and saw his instant apprehension that I might gush and attract unwanted attention. I just said something like, "Can I help you, Sir?" In the most normal voice I could. He said he had some items on order. I checked. As he took the receipt I said, "Thank you for many hours of entertainment." In a normal tone of voice. I wanted to be cool because he was just being a man out shopping and didn't want to blow his cover. I treasure that memory. I was listening to the series and I got to Wizard I just had to hear one thing. I am here from the video of Frank Muller reading The Gunslinger. Just the afterword brings back a load of memories, Frank's voice brings back the good things from my childhood. I also love The Stand and It. They are epic. The Dark Tower is his magnum opus. So happy to see you talking about it. Keep up the good work. Liked and subscribed.

What an interesting idea. I never considered that perhaps Roland should never have set foot in the Tower . By the time we got there I was so excited to finally have made it I was as ready as him to just run in! I like that analogy that it was like wanting to look upon the face of God.

I always pictured Roland's journey like a spiral. Little things happened to him, which spiral up for the better or down for worse. Him having the horn would be the story spiraling up for the better, but just slightly differently, so on and so forth. Same story slight differences until the world's improve (or worse-spiraling down). The ending the first time around made me read the books again, which I felt in a way was King's intent. The books we're a totally different experience for the second read. Made me love them even more.

The Gunslinger - I go back to it again and again. The Drawing of Three - I think the internal voice of a junked out Eddie Dean makes that book, the terrible story of Odetta/Detta with the cutting uncomfortable, venomous internal voice of Detta, and the chance to save the boy - that makes The Drawing of Three sparkle. So many people hate Susannah Dean, but her story is so intense and so deep. I love her character, if it weren't for the kind of lingering savvy of Detta then I think you would just have three people carrying Rolands water. Jake didn't trust Roland book 1, but by the time they are reunited - he loves him so completely. Eddie loves him too, and if he didn't love Susannah, or if she weren't there then there would have been a different book. I've read these books so many times. I have my own story which is influenced heavily by DT. I may never finish, I think that seeing the books in their totality makes me strive so hard to make a world and characters worthy of being written. It feels impossible. I think the DT is perfect in so many ways, it's kind of mind boggling.

I like how all of the stories are interconnected and how each time you see the ghosts, ghouls, vampires, and other supernatural creatures throughout the stories, their eyes all show connection to the Dead Lights. Like looking into Kurt Barlows eyes which are red orange and yellow but radiate the Dead Lights. The same thing with Pennywise the Clown, Carl Bierstone, Randall Flagg, Lord Malshun, James Boon, The Langoliers or the Devourers of Time and many others.

1) In The Final Argument portion of Wolves of the Calla, it is stated Walter was Farson. "Roland's nemesis, Marten Broadcloak, known in some worlds as Randall Flagg, in others as Richard Fannin, in others as John Farson (the Good Man)." It is never mentioned again. But in DT VII Walter reveals he was actually a soldier in Farson's army known as Rudin Filaro, who killed Cuthbert Allgood with an arrow through the eye on Jericho Hill. 2) Also one interesting detail I never see brought up is since the multiverse pretty much started with the DT sprouting up in what would become Mid-World, it's (understandably) the oldest of all the multiverse worlds but by a HUGE margin. At one point in the last book, the machine that was used to separate Susannah and Mia says NCP and Sombra were "the leaders in mind to mind communication since the ten thousands!" This would mean The Imperium existed until at least the 111th century. Since DT takes place thousands of years after they fell (anywhere from three to several thousand years) it could be anywhere from 13000 to 17000 AD in Mid-World (or older!) even before factoring in the erratic time flow from the damaged Beams.

53:59 I here this theory quite often, that the creatures from Buick 8 and the Mist come from the todash space, but it really don't match with what we see of Todash in the Dark Tower. Todash look like an empty, completly dark void, with immaterial demonic entities, like Pennywise, Tak, Mia or George Stark from the Dark Half. What comes from the Buick "just" look like creatures from an alien world, with different biology and so "alien" looking they induce fear into the characters. Same in The Mist, whatever comes from the mist are animals, they aren't "evil by nature" as Pennywise or Tak are. Even more, in Buick 8 we got a glimpse of what the other of the portal look like, and it's definitly another planet, not the endless darkness of Todash. Last thing that completly set appart creatures from Buick 8 from Todash is the last alien coming from it, even by his horrifying, lovecraftian looking, he's also terrfied by the situation and is as much a victim of the Buick as the humans are. Maybe I'm missing something, but imo, there is a very big difference between Todash and the creature from Buick 8 and the Mist. From the Todash, we have magical entities coming from the Prim, and in Buick 8 and the Mist, physicals creatures, just like regular lifeforms here on Earth, just coming from a different planet

He's a real King fan and would never disgrace the material by putting out a crap series. He has already made Dark Tower references in movies he's done such as Doctor Sleep and Geralds Game. In Doctor Sleep, he uses the line "ka is a wheel", and in Geralds Game, he uses the line "all things serve the beam". He has been setting this up for years.

I've read the complete series 4 times. I don't like how Flagg dies or how CK is defeated. However apart from that love the series its my favourite and I've read a lot of epic fantasy. But no matter what I read or in this case watch whatever forum I go on no one seems to get the ending although after a few re reads I think its clear. This journey/cycle we read is the penultimate. Why do I know this. The last line in the gunslinger reads roughly he will draw his horn of eld and blow at the tower one day which he does. How do I know he does well there is a part I believe in Song Of Susana where the character Stephen King receives a copy of the poem Childe Roland To the Dark Tower came and he says to himself In regards to the poem I know where to put this there is only one place to put this. So where does this poem go. That's right at the end of the last novel. You see the last line isn't the man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed. Its the last line of the poem the poem comes at the end and the poem is Roland's last journey where he does blows the horn everything is saved and he doesn't enter the tower. Your welcome.

Just finished the entire series, listened to them all back to back on scribd, for the first time. I like and hate the ending, I like it in the personal sense of Roland's journey, which to me seems like his journey through a dark night of the soul...but I can't help but feel confused, I get a sense that nothing really mattered. We are told how close all of reality is to falling apart if the dark tower falls, we are told that things are permanent in the keystone world, this is a law he makes quite clear, so Roland gets to the top of the tower and then what? Everything goes back to being in a perpetual state of almost falling apart? The keystone world isn't actually permanent? From an overarching plot perspective I feel quite cheated by the ending, from a story of personal growth and Roland, haunted by his past, working his way through the dark night of the soul and failing and having to redo it, I love that....as someone who has read it 4 times what are your thoughts on this?

@@battle247 Hi love chatting with people who have read the Dark Tower especially more than once. Alot of people feel the ending was a cheat or a cop out however the ending was planned for a long time and on re reads you will see the many clues, for instance Eddie somehow knows how too ride a horse although he has never been on one. Ka Is a wheel which always comes back on itself. There's many more which I can't think off top of my head. I remember the palver with the man in black at the end of the gunslinger being very important and as its very meta fiction a part where Jake has a school report and he writes constantly the Gunslinger is the Truth. We belive he is referring too Roland however it could be he is referring to the 1st Novel.. the biggest thing is I believe the end isn't.... the man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed. The poem Childe Roland To The Dark Tower Came is at the end. It wasn't put there for (excuse the pun) poetic influence, our cycle is the penultimate maybe the 19th ? And the poem is Roland's last journey he has learnt Redemption and blows the horn at the Towers foot as the poem says re read the poem he doesn't enter the Tower the cycle doesn't re set. He has learnt as we the reader should learn sometimes its not about the destination or the end (Roland's being climbing the Tower) sometimes the Journey is more Important Roland's Journey being a character learning too not treat everything as insignificant. So each cycle the keystone worlds things are set but as you said yes when he enters the last door everything does reset. But at the end being the poem he doesn't enter hence know reset and blowing the horn as he does in the poem he magic of eld lasts and is eternal the Tower never fails. Nothing breaks down. I like where the Cycle resumes which is the desert which makes us believe everything before the desert still happened for example his mother's death his one and only true loves death Susan Delgado. But maybe they were different as this time he has the horn that I think is left too the reader whether things were different too that point or not. Sorry for long msg hope I've helped but yeah what happend isn't for no reason as its about him learning as he does I believe in each cycle until on his last journey which we also read in poem form he has the horn and uses the magic of eld too save all world's.

@@stuartneale5008 Thanks for responding! So perhaps what I am really struggling to understand, and this may be that I really missed something or haven't read enough of Kings other books, but what is it that makes Roland so important? I understand he is of the line of Eld but Arthur Eld himself was just a man, wasn't he? I know he swore to protect the tower and hold up the beams but what does that have to do with Roland himself? Why does Gan, for surely that is who is pulling these strings, require Roland to constantly repeat this journey, if Gan has the power to reset it all, time after time then what is Roland's actual purpose in regards to the Tower? I absolutely understand his feud with the Crimson King, and I understand his calling to save the tower by Gan, as a descendant of the line of Eld he is especially qualified for the task.. but as far as the repeating part? Why? The Dark Tower was saved, what does Roland becoming a better person actually have to do with the the bigger picture?....I hope I said that all clearly!
@stuartneale5008
@stuartneale5008 Жыл бұрын
@@battle247 So Gan isn't literally pulling the strings. The Prim lets call that the Big Bang in the known universe is the start from it rose Gan who is like God. From his navel he spun the universes/worlds when the Prim receded the Tower and Beams and Midworld and all worlds were left. I Believe Gan is the spiritual embodiment of the Tower when the Tower speaks too Roland as he is climbing it I believe that's Gan/God talking too him, now as humans who believe In God we know God can't re set everything wrong we make as Gan can't. We have too learn from mistakes as does Roland. Roland's purpose in regards too the Tower is too use Elds magic and make sure the Tower hence all time and space is safe and only he can as he is the Last Gunslinger. Last decendant of Arthur Eld. Roland becoming a better person is the bigger picture because I said previously Stephen Kings clear view is the Journey is better then the destination. He believes Roalnd learning through each cycle which he does as on his last journey he has the horn where before he didn't bother picking it up after cuthberts death. Roland's character is improving and he isn't as methodical and seeing people as a mean too ends. That's why Stephen King also put the warning, basically saying dont read the last chapter leave Roland here enjoy the journey. But us as readers are like Roland we are Tower Junkies and won't stop until we reach it. I haven't ever stopped at warning and don't think I will, then the end is for many people oh shit he does all that again his journey was too be re set.. but as I say it isn't the end the end is the poem being the last thing in the series its there for a reason its Roland's last journey. As for the Top of the Tower resetting I mean that's up too personal interpretation, sure King could have had Roland have the Horn in our Read through and he blew it magic restored the end but I think King wanted too get his point across too us that through trial and error through persistence we as people can constantly improve and can do the right thing be a better person. I also believe he wanted too hammer home the importance of the journey and too enjoy it (Enjoy the whole story not just judge it by its end) and not just think of the ending like Roland is only thinking about the ending (his being ascended the Tower) So once entering the Tower which is the End the embodiment of Gan resets him as he hasn't learned the lesson of being a good person of treating his Ka tet with love. His attitude cost Jake his life under the mountains as well as many other things notably leaving the horn which is needed too save all worlds. Another way too look at it is aswell is King wants his story too be immortal and not end he gives us as the reader too end the story with Roland standing at the Tower door. He warns us and we as readers take him through that door and up those stairs we send him back we re kill is mom Susan Delgado Eddie Jake OY. I can't give definitive answer to the ending, its just my thoughts I think that's what makes the story soo good people have different views. My view is King wants too impress his opinion on journey being more important then destination and did it through a very long story and we as readers should realise that through hard trials and respecting loved ones and helping them more e.t.c we can have a good journey through life. There's soo much too discuss people forget also that although it wasn't our Eddie and our Jake remember there are other words than these Susannah meets them again. What happens too Patrick Danvielle. Also all the connections in other books. One book has Patrick and the Crimson King in cant think of the name it. But yeah I love it as a whole a few things I didn't like such as CK battle and Flaggs death never really liked what he did with Modred. But everything else including the end I liked.

@@battle247 The Tower also restting him could be Gan knowing The Tower isn't restored (no Horn of Eld) is making Roland the last decendant of King Arthur go back and retrieve it. Remember also too Roland Stephen King is Gan and Roland helps keep him alive too finish his story. Its soo out there that a character in a story knows he is a character the story just blows my mind. I'll re read it again for sure at the moment reading The Wheel Of Time. I'm on book 5/16. It's a very good series.

I just started the Gunslinger for the first time and have just gotten to the part where he finally leaves the town of Tull. I have to admit that this novel hasn't really gripped me yet and I find myself wondering why people rave over this series in general. Nothing about it has impressed me thus far, although I know I am very early in. I've been told that the huhuge amount of confusion I have am feeling is normal and to be expected. Is it worth me hanging on and trying to soldier through the rest of this huge series if I am not yet really enjoying The Gunslinger at all? There seems to be all these religious overtones going throughout this book and SK's attitude toward Christianity almost strikes me as negative. Is it me or does SK seem to be displaying an anti-Christian sentiment? I am confused if he is letting his feelings about it be known in the story or if he is really making allusions/comparisons between The Man in Black and Satan. There are a lot of things that have occurred so far in the store that makes it seem as though Stephen is making it known throughout the character of Roland how he feels about Christianity. Or am I looking at this wrong? As a Christian, it makes me want to drop the book/series. I have only ever read one prior SK book, Salem's Lot, and am totally new to The Dark Tower series.

Oh wow, so King warns the reader to go on reading in a similar way Roland was warned to go inside the tower, because it wasn't necessary. But we kept on reading and got the non-ending (because it starts again) we deserved for our hubris. Just like Roland we made the same mistake to try to see the "deity" of the tower to understand what holds everything together. Instead we just could have been happy with what we achieved and go home. Wow just wow

THE "DARK TOWER" Steven King stole THE "DARK TOWER" from Roadmarks by Roger Zelazny (Author), The Road runs from the unimaginable past to the far future, and those who travel it have access to the turnoffs leading to all times and places - even to the alternate time-streams of histories that never happened. Why the Dragons of Bel'kwinith made the Road - or who they are - no one knows. But the Road has always been there and for those who know how to find it, it always will be! Dizzying in its virtuosity, gripping in its kaleidoscopic treatment of time, character, and action, Roadmarks is a dazzling achievement. About the author: Roger Zelazny was a science-fiction and fantasy writer, a six-time Hugo Award winner, and a three-time Nebula Award winner. He published more than 40 novels in his lifetime. His first novel, This Immortal, serialized in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction under the title ...And Call Me Conrad won the Hugo Award for best novel. Lord of Light, his third novel, also won the Hugo award and was nominated for the Nebula award. He died at age 58 of cancer. Zelazny was posthumously inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2010.

If you're saying Clint should play Roland, he is way too old. But you're right, the character Roland was writing with Eastwood in mind. Remember, King started this series in the seventies. When you're reading the series, every time Roland speaks or is mentioned, all I see is Clint Eastwood. Although, I have read that Mike Flanagan is making the Dark Tower into a series and has put a picture with him and Pedro Pascal on his social media. Pedro would be perfect, but he's already done two roles that are very similar to Roland. The old, tough, warrior, loner who takes in a youngster and goes on a journey. He may be worried about being typecast.

The gunslingers are the ultimate guild. They know secrets about consciousness that allows them to perform acts they seem magical. The dark tower is Stephen Kings consciousness and the characters are trying to understand but they can’t see outside of their reality. Conscious control systems run everything. To relate this to another idea from a similar themed movie (I’m my personal opinion): “You have meddled with the primal forces of nature, Mr. Beale, and I won't have it!! Is that clear?! You think you've merely stopped a business deal. That is not the case. The Arabs have taken billions of dollars out of this country, and now they must put it back! It is ebb and flow, tidal gravity! It is ecological balance! You are an old man who thinks in terms of nations and peoples. There are no nations. There are no peoples. There are no Russians. There are no Arabs. There are no third worlds. There is no West. There is only one holistic system of systems, one vast and immane, interwoven, interacting, multivariate, multinational dominion of dollars. Petro-dollars, electro-dollars, multi-dollars, reichmarks, rins, rubles, pounds, and shekels. It is the international system of currency which determines the totality of life on this planet. That is the natural order of things today. That is the atomic and subatomic and galactic structure of things today! And YOU have meddled with the primal forces of nature, and YOU WILL ATONE! Am I getting through to you, Mr. Beale? You get up on your little twenty-one inch screen and howl about America and democracy. There is no America. There is no democracy. There is only IBM and ITT and AT&T and DuPont, Dow, Union Carbide, and Exxon. Those are the nations of the world today. What do you think the Russians talk about in their councils of state -- Karl Marx? They get out their linear programming charts, statistical decision theories, minimax solutions, and compute the price-cost probabilities of their transactions and investments, just like we do. We no longer live in a world of nations and ideologies, Mr. Beale. The world is a college of corporations, inexorably determined by the immutable bylaws of business. The world is a business, Mr. Beale. It has been since man crawled out of the slime. And our children will live, Mr. Beale, to see that perfect world in which there's no war or famine, oppression or brutality -- one vast and ecumenical holding company, for whom all men will work to serve a common profit, in which all men will hold a share of stock, all necessities provided, all anxieties tranquilized, all boredom amused. And I have chosen you, Mr. Beale, to preach this evangel.”
