This is an unpopular opinion, but The Gunslinger always my favorite book out of the series. It's the only one that has a vibe or aesthetic to it, as if King was still toying with literary aspirations. The world King creates is mysterious in the first book because he hadn't filled in all the blanks yet and it's written in a very visual and cinematic style that lent itself to really memorable images. Many of those images are surreal, kind of like album covers that invite interpretation. If you just think back to your memory of the book and consider what those memories look like, you might see what I mean: the scar on Alice's face, madwoman preacher and the town attacking Roland, Roland in the circle of stones with the jaw bone, Jake just before he falls into the pit, the golgotha and the psychedelic vision of the universe Roland has at the end. The whole book is like this and it's awesome. It's really kind of a shame that King didn't continue employing this style in the later books. You can tell that this is the same King that wrote Different Seasons, while the later books definitely seem like they're written by the guy who wrote Dreamcatcher. I'm mystified as to why people like the later books more than this one. Honestly, while I remember the first three books, a lot of the stuff that happens from the fourth book onward is really kind of hazy. They were fun to read at the time, but it's only the first three books that were really memorable. But whatever, I guess it's just me.

This is really cool! I didn't even know anything like this existed on KZbin! I've read the entire series once and some years after intended to read it again, but after the 5th book (Wolves of the Calla) I realized Song of Suzanna had went missing at some point. I tried to skip it and read a couple pages of The Dark Tower but I just couldn't do it. There were so many things I'd forgotten and skipping an entire book was just not possible. While most people will remember the endings to the books they like, it's damn near everything else that will escape memory. I really love this book despite it being a bit rough due to lacking that insane level of polish King is known for. I remember very vividly back when I had finished this one and went to the 2nd, The Drawing of the Three, and the difference between the two really blowing my mind. The first one has the very surreal, deliberate vibe while the follow-up goes balls to the walls and maintains that kinetic pace throughout. My younger, impatient self was truly won over with the next book because I had just never read anything like it and it had such a gigantic effect on me. Anyway, glad I came across this vid, I look forward to checking out more content! You reading voice is great and really makes following along a blast, and also great job at that line delivery, "GO then, there are other worlds than deez!" hahaha That line comes off as if King left his typewriter a moment to use the head and the ghost of Lovecraft suck in to do what he did worst: dialogue. I like to think that's how writers haunt one another.

I'm listening to the series I had read the drawing of 3. I waited for Wizard and Glass for a while then I forgot about it until I saw the books on Audible. I bought and downloaded the series and Last night I heard about a germ called Captain Tripps that they read in a newspaper and it's the reason why so many are dead in Kansa. The name of the plauqe would only mean something to you if you've read or watched The Stand. If you haven't read or watched The Stand small spoiler alert. The name of the germ in The Stand that killed 75 to 95% of the population died because of a germ called Captain Tripps. For me, this can only mean that Roland's Ka-Tet is walking through the dimension of Kansas in The Stand. Thoughts, anyone am I wrong to assume that they are walking in the dimension of The Stand?
@theloveofreading35632 жыл бұрын
They are traveling not through the same word of the stand that we read about in the stand , but a similar world on another level of the tower.

@@theloveofreading3563 So it's just a coincidence to you that it's the same disease and place as described in the stand? I will know more when I am done wizard and glass.

It's not a coincidence. King is taking you through the landscape found in The Stand. However it's not the exact landscape found in his novel The Stand. It's a different version of the stand , on a different level of the tower.
@KillerBreeze4202 жыл бұрын
@@theloveofreading3563 That makes so little sense to me. The assignment is to answer this question. Am I wrong to assume that they are currently walking in the dimension of The Stand? So far I see no reason not to assume this and not now with more evidence pointing at it. If this is not The Stands Kansas, What makes the 2 differ? With the information given to me so far I see no reason to not assume they are walking through the Kansas that is in The Stand. For me hearing about Captain TRipps and than Jake find s a note. The old woman named Abigail is in Nabreska the dark man is in the west maybe Vegas. A bit of paraphrasing but to me this sure looks like the Stand to me. In any case I'm an hour form finishing wizard and glass and then I'll start the next book perhaps I will gain some knowledge to change my mind but saying it isn't teh stand we read about even though the detail match perfectly isn't going to cut it for me and I don;t want any spoilers so I wont be back for a while.Roland even says at one point to Suzanne that Abigail is a part of another story as far as I Can see this cinhes it for me but that could change hope to talk about this again in a few days I don't want any spoilers.I just thought it would be a bit of fun to talk about this one thing I find so fascinating but it occurred to me that I may need to read more of the book before believing it totally this is well my hypothesis for now.
@KillerBreeze4202 жыл бұрын
@@theloveofreading3563 So at the end of wizard and glass Stephen King himself tells us that middle earth contains all of his book's worlds and our world. Captain Tripp's plaque Roland's nemesis Martin Broadcloak who as King says is also known as Randal Flag he also said there are a few other names he goes by as well but I didn't type them out. I can now say with certainty that there are doors and that even thinnys can lead to not only our world but all of King's other worlds. I don't know if that closing is in the written book but his comments are at the end of the audiobook. I can transcribe it word for word if you like. Regardless, with this new knowledge, I can say with certainty, that Roland and his Ka-tet are travelling or traveled through Kansas in the realm of The Stand that we read about.

Begun my Dark Tower Journey. The Gunslinger is… fine. I think it does to much backstory jumping, and while it all does come together in the end, kind of feels like padding for the real journey. That being Roland’s Hunt for the Elusive Dark Tower. I loved reading of his journey and some of his bits with Jake was great, but I found Jake to be VERY annoying. Like, Jake is one of the worst kid characters. I’m not sure if Jake is in Drawing of the Three and the other novels but I’m hoping he becomes a better character. Also I felt like there could’ve been less talks about universes. Like that whole thing with The Man in Black at the end could’ve been trimmed. I’m gonna continue on my quest and I’m excited to see where The Drawing of the Three goes. But The Gunslinger is the weakest by far and not a good start in my opinion. But hey there are people who love this book and that’s fine by me.

Dude, what the hell? The bit at the end which hints at the cosmic significance of the Tower was one of the coolest things about the book. The idea of it incites the imagination and also just stylistically it was a cool idea to end a book written in a visual and cinematic style with a psychedelic vision like Kubrick's Space Odyssey. I just read the entire book and can't help but feeling like...the entire first book is one massive intro scene. I know other things will come to happen but I feel like as a stand alone novel it's really disappointing. It's only excused by the fact that there's multiple other books. This book is just him walking a desert, banging a woman with a scarred face, shooting a town of hypnotized freaks, then walking desert, meeting a boy, walking with a boy, going through a tunnel, shooting a couple mutants, having a philosophical campfire talk, and then continuing to walk West and reaching a beach. So, lots of walking, and time being very loose and abstract, and a couple uses of his guns. Even King says in the Foreword he feels like Gunslinger was a book "very much written by a young man" so he fixed it up a bit with the rerelease but it's still not his best work by any means. It's supposed to be his take on Tolkien but what in the fuck did I just read 😂

THE "DARK TOWER" Steven King stole THE "DARK TOWER" from Roadmarks by Roger Zelazny (Author), The Road runs from the unimaginable past to the far future, and those who travel it have access to the turnoffs leading to all times and places - even to the alternate time-streams of histories that never happened. Why the Dragons of Bel'kwinith made the Road - or who they are - no one knows. But the Road has always been there and for those who know how to find it, it always will be! Dizzying in its virtuosity, gripping in its kaleidoscopic treatment of time, character, and action, Roadmarks is a dazzling achievement. About the author: Roger Zelazny was a science-fiction and fantasy writer, a six-time Hugo Award winner, and a three-time Nebula Award winner. He published more than 40 novels in his lifetime. His first novel, This Immortal, serialized in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction under the title ...And Call Me Conrad won the Hugo Award for best novel. Lord of Light, his third novel, also won the Hugo award and was nominated for the Nebula award. He died at age 58 of cancer. Zelazny was posthumously inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2010.
