Its nice that ben barnes at least tries to understand the darkling even though he did terrible things. To me thats a sign of a good actor, being able to play the villan with the understanding of the person. You know where all humans and the evil inside us always has a story. They say the best villans have the best backstory and if an actor can understand that AND act like it thats the best thing

I haven't read the books yet and I have no plan to do so but I am definitely enjoying the show and from the first season what I get is that his reasons are so right...he is protecting Grisha, I can't see his power mongering nature at all.

I like the shows darkling but in the book he is a bit more distant which makes it quite hard to understand him/be sure about his feelings and motives. But it’s a great show and book

Not to excuse The Darkling of any of his bad deeds, but Alina claiming he "killed her friends" because he created the fold is really hypocritical, she willingly put her cartographer friends in a mortal danger only to be with Mal. And then they died. So their blood were on her hands too

Yes and the darkling didn't know that the fold would be created, he thought that he would just protect his people with that forbidden magic, he didn't know what the price would be.

The Darkling intentionally created the Shadow Fold to use as a weapon against Ravka's and the Grisha's enemies, but he did not plan on the volcra. The creation of the volcra was an unintended consequence of the magic Kirigan used to make the Shadow Fold.

I don't know why, but I have never loved a villain so much as him, I suppose it's because even though his action are wrong you can kind of understand where he comes from, sympathize with him and put yourself in his shoes, also the darkling's personality and presence is so strong and magnetic, for me he stole the show's attention and light. He was the most intriguing character, I know I'm supposed to hate him, but at least until now it has been impossible

At 2:12, the only reason he destroyed the village was for Alina, because they tried to kill her. I truly believe that he is not all bad but just misunderstood and probably takes everything one step too far even when his intentions are good. He also truly loves Alina and no one can change my mind about that

@@DJ_TamTam I know, I actually read all the books and i absolutely hated him for what he did to Alina, Genya, Zoya and so many more in them. But I think it would be an interesting concept if they changed the story and explored the relationship between Alina and the Darkling, maybe making him more human in the process. I just think the duality of their powers and their opposition (light and darkness) would be so fascinating to see.

“Anyone capable of love, is capable of being saved,” Caroline of The Vampire Diaries. Darkling is capable of love. He loves his people, and he loves Alina, no matter what people say or think about it, it's a fact. So there is hope for him ... and I hope the writers take this opportunity, instead of following Leigh Bardugo's frustrating, inconsistent, and problematic writing. That would be a waste, as they have gold in their hands with such a character, and a relationship like Darklina. If they don't end up together, no big deal, but at least I demand that the relationship continue to be properly exploited (season 1 at this level is much better than in volume 1), and a redemption for Alexander!

I'm not sure how to describe the Darkling. A lot of his motives seem justifiable. From the beginning of his story, Grisha are being killed because the King is afraid of their power. And before he decided to devour that town in darkness, they literally straight up admitted that they were going to kill everyone on the boat. However, his methods are what really gets him labelled as an antagonist. He's definitely the means justify the ends type of guy. I know many wanna label him the villain but he seems more like an anti-hero to me. He's been fighting by himself for too long, I don't think he truly knows how to fight side by side with someone and try to come up with another way. I heard the book version of the Darkling is way worse, but at least in this series, I hope he does get a redemption arc because he still does make SOLID points and it would be so cheap to just label him the villain. There's a whole world out there that can be fleshed out.

I agree with you! The Darkling in the books is less emotional, more manipulative and secretive, and fully disgustingly evil. I won’t say what he does if you don’t know, because there is a chance that they may incorporate that into the series. Unlike the novels, the series depicts the Darkling as a human, someone who has gone though lots of pain, and someone who knows what emotions are. The Darkling’s character is so incredibly complex that it leaves fans eager to learn more about him. If you haven’t read the books, I 110% recommend them! They are different but give you more context to the series because as always, some events must be cut from the final script. The characters are depicted different also, but still your characters you see and love in the show :) *there is also connections in the show specifically to the book that normal viewers don’t pick up*

The only people who are on Aleks level with the ability to change his ways are Baghra and Alina.(Or Luda if someone can raise her from the dead) Both A & B have great Grisha powers and annoy him but on an emotional level he won't kill them. They are his only emotional and immortal bonds. Reading 'Demon in the Woods' at the heart of Aleks story is loneliness and being vulnerable as a young living amplifier. In adulthood loneliness and political frustration eroded Aleks humanity over time. If Alina remained immortal & ALONE..... it is likely she would get just as jaded over time like Aleks repeating the cycle. If someone can show Aleks a pathway for Grisha to live without persecution without using his violent methods maybe there he can change? Regardless, there will always be Ravkans who will never forgive Aleks for what he has done in the past over all those 100's of years. For that there is always a price. So even though it would be great due to immortality to see Aleks & Alina as a pairing - working together, in my head a fitting finale would have been that both have died together to protect the Grisha. Then quotes from the book & show : 'you are not alone' ;'like calls to like' and that they were 'each others balance' would then ring more true.

The main problem that could arise is that there are lots of helpless innocents who got caught up in the politics. It was mainly the King who was hunting the Grisha and the Darkling. But if the Darkling goes on his quest for revenge then it will definitely lead to war. War is always bloody and brutal. The Darkling will definitely want revenge for his losses. He will probably get carried away in his vengeance and cause lots of pain and suffering on all sides. Revenge is a hateful cycle that only wrecks havoc on all around you. Even your own team will suffer because of it. Of course, if he simply makes a new empire that is safe for Grisha then that is fine but what about the humans? What's to stop the Grisha from making their own powerful magical dictatorship and using humans as slave out of revenge? Cause that is how I see this ending if the Darkling wins. Obviously the humans do need some form of punishment for abusing the Grisha but there is no easy side here. Everyone has to find a peaceful balance to co-exist. You fall into traps when it's an us or them type mentality.

I know Darkling is sexy and cool and all that, but... Guys. He’s still the bad guy. He’s a manipulative, selfish, and ultimately cruel man who craves power above all else. Whatever feelings he has for Alina, it doesn’t excuse what he’s done and what he’s trying to do. And more than that it doesn’t excuse him making her a prisoner and threatening the ones she cares about because he’s just that bad at rejection. That’s the point of Alina and the Darkling’s love story. It wasn’t meant to be, thanks to his choices.
