The Darkness 2 and Syndicate | 2012's Twin Titles | 2020 Review

The connection between Syndicate and The Darkness 2 isn't immediately obvious at first. The two games share a release month, a common development history, and a litany of mechanics in common. Starbreeze Studios, developer of the first Darkness game, was the developer of Syndicate 2012. Digital Extremes, the guys who made the multiplayer for Bioshock 2, developed the sequel, The Darkness 2. Both showing some focus on alternative co-operative play, with a main character with a separate power-set and a locantic run time, they also differ slightly in that The Darkness 2 tries to be about something more profound than "protagonist being manipulated", granted not by much. This video functions as both a 2020 review and comparison between the two twin titles of 2012.

Please bear in mind that I had 37 subscribers when I uploaded this video. I played a decent amount of Warframe back around 2015, I did not play Destiny. It was a common shitpost to call the earlier game a "Destiny Clone". You should have recognized the joke when I then referred to the game "doing a rail of cocaine" and "helicoptering out of the research facility".

The darkness 2 was actually a lot more similar to the comics than the darkness, but the first game was better In my opinion. Better visuals and all that. Less filler. Like painkiller if clive barker was in charge of the visuals. I guess I'm gonna subscribe now. The morrowind video was really good too.

Great vid! I don't get the point you make about the tentacles during 8:50. One tentacle wraps him and holds on to him while the other tentacle goes through him. Its 2 mouths because it's 2 tentacles, no? If you watch the animation its very clear that the second tentacle goes in full speed and goes through him.
@spookmeyer970
@spookmeyer970 2 жыл бұрын
yeah, the left tentacle is acting like it's gonna crush him while it eats through his stomach and the right tentacle goes in for the heart. It's a shame about the limited animations, the tentacle snakes are amusing and have a bit of personality to themselves.

Play the first one first if you can, it's better than 2 imo. I'd say the shooter gameplay is more refined in 2 overall but the combat just "feels" better in 1. The weapons and attacks are a lot more punchy and violent in 1. If you've played the Riddick game, it's kinda like that only a lot more gorey. Also there are different, and imo better, powers in 1. Probably most notably one called creeping darkness that allows you to detach one of the tentacle heads and control it directly for stealth purposes or to flank enemies in cover.

The first time i played... or actually, tried to play The Darkness 2 was when i downloaded a demo of it on my old PC... which had an Athlon 64 X2 with an ATI X1950 Pro and the game was running at like 5 fps :-P (i had a better PC at the time but the GPU was broken so i had to use an older one). Still i liked it enough so that once i got a new PC it was one of the first games i bought - and really liked it. And now that i saw you having a video about it and Syndicate at the same time i decided to play Syndicate to avoid any spoilers before watching the video (i was planning on playing Syndicate at some point but since it wasn't received that well i was avoiding - honestly, this is something i should stop doing as these days i also played Terminator: Resistance and had a blast with it despite being critically panned). Fortunately the game was at around 3 euros sale so i bought it and finished it in about 7 hours (according to Origin), which seems par for the course (based on howlongtobeat). I have to say i really liked it for a short game. It'd probably be outstaying its welcome if it was longer though since there wasn't that much going on in there. But the part i *really* liked was entering a room/area and quickhacking stuff - especially at the places where there are turrets (which sadly are few). The "Persuade" app was the one i used the most (initially i thought i'd be using Suicide more but eventually i ended up barely using it since enemies tend to spread out). The story was neat though nothing special IMO but i liked some aspects of the writing (e.g. the app names :-P) and the world building (i like when games do not explicitly try to explain their world to you, especially if you are supposed to be some character that has already lived in that world, but instead just present you with the world and let you pick up things yourself - though Syndicate does cheat a little here with all the history lessons masquerading as reports for other syndicates, but i think that is something that annoyed me mainly because of the game's length). BTW i haven't played the original Syndicate games but i think some aspects are taken from that game. I wonder how come it was received badly. I mean, sure, it isn't all time classic material, but there have been worse games (IMO) and at least at the time there wasn't much in terms of cyberpunk material out there (which i think this game does fine). Then again around 2012 before Cyberpunk hyped cyberpunk to heavens, there wasn't much interest (from what i remember) in the genre anyway (and as you said, the game isn't the 'neon, night and rain' style of cyberpunk that many seem to associate with the genre). FWIW i never had any bugs or glitches with the game. Also i kinda liked the music (though until i saw the name in credits i didn't knew it was Skrillex... :-P or really didn't knew any of the supposedly big names you mentioned since i'm not into movies that much). Anyway, nice game, i certainly had fun with it. Though i doubt i'll play it (or The Darkness 2 for that matter) again any time soon :-P

This masterful thirty-five minute video game analysis hits the sweetest sweetspot for me. Especially impressive (aside from the sheer amount of effort, research, and editing) was your point on sound design. It's such a distinct contrast, listening to audible cues only, between the two titles. One is grimy, intense, and bloody - the other is sterile, mechanical and soulless. It reminds me of an old allegory made about wealth and food (this sounds melodramatic but it's actually pretty neat.) The impoverished ask "did you have enough?" The median ask "was it good?" The rich ask "was it presented well?" The implication being that those very affluent are guaranteed to enjoy in quality and quantity, with the only nominal difference being visual presentation. I always compare this to the triple-A game industry. "Was it good?" (Usually, a $60 title will indeed be good, even if still mediocre and disappointing.) "Was it great?" (This is where universally high Metacritic scores come in.) "Was it inspired, soulful, and innovative?" (This could mean near-masterpiece, but also reliant on uniqueness and creativity.) The last category is interesting, because even a game with shortcomings (like middling Unity-quality graphics) could be redeemed by having soul, creativity, and heart - paired with outstanding combat (Furi.) And thus concludes my Ted X Talk for the evening. Anyway, top tier video my dudeski, thanks for the shoutout lol 🤗👾

The Altered Carbon book is amazing (much better than the show too), there's a reason why his name is bigger than the title of the book..... it deserves it, one of the most rich, complex and unique sci-fi stories you'll read, it's no wonder they got Morgan for Syndicate, just wish they gave him more room for better interwoven world-building and also had a bigger scale/budget to flesh out all his crazy ideas.

A beloved game of mine is getting a sequel with Epic Game Store exclusivity, basically ensuring it’ll release to no fanfare and quickly be forgotten. It got me thinking about other games with similar predicaments. I wish someone on KZbin would take a look at bad or forgotten (or preferably both) games, or just games that have remained under the radar, specifically with interesting and ambitious but poorly implemented design choices. Like the type of game that could have moved the industry/medium forward if it had a few million dollars more during development or wasn’t released the same day as a Call of Duty game or something. Since you brought them up during the video, Bullfrog’s Magic Carpet is definitely one of those games. You could probably say the same for most of Molyneux’s games honestly. The Sean Murrays and Peter Molyneux-type visionaries of the world, as hated as they may be, are honestly what video games needs more of. It sucks that they’re met with widespread scorn and death threats. I’d rather have an average game that does something no other game has ever tried to do than ten tentpole AAA releases you could already write the accolades trailer for after the debut trailer even if it’s only deserving of a 7.5. I’m looking at you Breath of the Wild, Deathloop, and every Uncharted game. It sucks that increased cost and visual fidelity has discouraged any type of experimentation or singular vision. Shenmue was the single most expensive video game release of it’s time and it shows. Everything about it felt “new” at the time, like we were experiencing the evolution of video games. Now everything costs just as much and you’d never be able to tell from the boring and uninspired copy-paste mechanics and gameplay ideas. If the industry wasn’t too big to fail I feel like there would have been so many instances after the 80s where there was risk of total collapse. If you ever reach the bottom of the well of ideas for videos, this is something that hasn’t been explored very much on KZbin and I think people would be really receptive to it.

I don’t care what negative thoughts people have against 2012 Syndicate. It’s a 2012 fps and it has its limits when looked at through modern next gen standards. For me the game ran smoothly on the PS3, I can only complain about freezing in combat and the dead multiplayer with piss poor match making, those are my only complaints (and maybe longer content). I absolutely LOVED the soundtrack and I listen to it all the time. I may sound nostalgic but when I played this game on release I was just a little 13 year old and Syndicate was the coolest game I ever played in my life at that time. It made me obsessed with cyberpunk themes. Also that boss fight with Skrillex blasting in the background fills me up with adrenaline every time and I remember my braincells working like they are on the Dart. Also Kilo maybe an empty protagonist but his actions says it all, in fact he almost reminds me of the DoomSlayer in every way. I guess your not the most intrigued by dubstep. I don’t like most dubstep (like those weird mainstream gamer remix ones) but this soundtrack is lit AF (I’m also obsessed with Industrial Metal mainly) Anyway it’s always great to watch a video about an underrated game from 2012 in 2020

I'm not saying a short game can't be good, just that I don't think what there was of it was substance enough to justify a full game. You'd probably have more fun playing 4 hours of a better FPS and still have some game left.

In 8:42 it's not one tentacle with two mouths but two tentacles. One is grabbing the guy and biting him in the stomach, and then the other one is burrowing through his back and out of his chest. Having read and watched Altered Carbon, I can really see why the show was better regarded. In addition to the obvious points of being newer, being a visual medium, not being a book, having good special effects... Well, the show is also a combination of the primary narratives of 2 books. This works quite well to round out the issues with pacing especially in the second book and fills out the first a bit. The only issue I had was the combo made a few too many coincidences where there were a few too many characters the main character met and interacted with naturally at one point became pivotal later on for completely coincidental reasons.

@@negative6442 it's hard to say since it was cancelled before having a resolution to the primary narrative, which sucks. As a show, however, it's truly great in acting, effects, and world. As I said the issue I had was since they combined the first 2 books together, they also combined certain characters which made the story a bit too "oh so this random person I worked with out of convenience in season 1 is now super important to something completely different in season 2, small world" over and over again. It's a really small complaint but they do that about 5 times and it takes away a bit of the realism.

It's interesting you'd bring up EA ripping off Bethesda, as years ago they really really ripped off Bethesda by stealing a game engine they had made and using it for the madden series

Ah yes, the sequel that is in all ways inferior to the first game (seems like their speciality considering b2). The only exception is probably it being also on pc

I'm sorry but "then DE made warframe, a Destiny clone"... You know... it's not like Warframe was out YEARS before Destiny was even announced, and it's not like Warframe was considered WAY better in almost every way than Destiny AND Destiny 2 at least a year into this last one's launch, and that those were openly classified as "Warframe clones" by most people (and for that matter, same happened to Anthem)... nah, I guess Warframe is a Destiny clone right ? Also, TF2 is an overwatch clone right ?

@@Klugdeph Even if it's a bait, only old timers from WF will ever get that reference. It's way too obscure and only propagates wrong information in favor of god awfull AAA publishers. I like the dude, went through all his videos in a couple days, but that also means I know oh so well how biased and prone to shortcuts and oversimplifications he can be and how poorly researched some of his points are sometimes (he can research some things pretty well, but that's absolutly not a constant), I wouldn't be surprised if he actually believed WF to be younger than Destiny and just inserted an old meme from the clunky first years of the game for the heck of it. And finally, this could be a unfortunate coincidence. No matter what it is, I stand by my comment as I'm sure many dullheads jumped on this point without giving it any thought just to reinforce their belief. (And don't worry, I know OH SO WELL the gigantic mountain of problems WF has, not fanboying over the game, more doing a "uhm actually" moment because I am bored out of my mind, peace !)

The Syndicate reboot is rather forgettable. But if you have some freinds to play, then you can get some enjoyment out of the coop. The servers through are going down for good on June 15th. Get the enjoyment of the coop with friends while it lasts

I don’t think dubstep is necessarily bad for video games. It seems like the perfect soundtrack for hyper stylized, neon puke ultra violence. When you want to get lost in the combat, feel the music and the thumping of the guns. It’s probably bad when you want to be present.

Dubstep is out of place in vidfeo games... Devil May Cry instantly springs to mind. I think the dubstep tracks during those boss battles worked to enhance the gameplay.

DMC doesnt have any Dubstep what are you talking about Just to clarify: Hotline Miami and furi dont utilize Dubstep either, the music Sounds very dubstep-ish, but was composed specifically to Work in a Video Game regular dubstep is dance music, thats slightly different

@Socucius Ergalla He was joking anyway, but if you wanna take that line technically both games were conceptualised by their respective devs like a decade both either of them came out. There are Destiny references in Halo 2 and 3. And you can just look at the box art for Dark Sector and immediately know that DE wanted to make Warframe instead lol.
