the marines are in a lot of these games because the Marine Corps "doesn't have a problem killing aliens." I'm not joking, it was a quote from a Marine PR officer. The Marine Corps wants marines in as much media as possible for recruitment. They are pretty willing to help anyone making something with the military so long as they look badass in their eyes.
@Patrician4 жыл бұрын
Makes a lot of sense actually. They shouldn't have a problem with killing, as long as they don't do it when they're told not to. It's what we pay them for.
@MisterBones29104 жыл бұрын
The USMC seems more than aware that it's pretty hard to give them "bad PR" in the eyes of the kind of guys they want. After all, Full Metal Jacket is some of the best recruitment material ever made for them and it had a man turned into a soldier so hard that he went nuts and killed his drill instructor then himself, the "how can you kill women and children" scene, and all sorts of other things that would usually be regarded as negative.

Tara Strickland's father was a character in Crysis 1. His death is almost comedic: He goes off with full marine bravado and gets instantly vaporized by one of the heavy walker units. I'd call this a spoiler except Tara comments on his death back in the Wall Street level. Colonel Barclay awkwardly expositions about her during the evacuation. You're supposed to recognize the name Strickland and pay attention to her. All of this falls kinda flat if you've skipped the first game; You get in the elevator and Barklay just starts blathering on about someone you don't know. Also, fun trivia: Nomad (from Crysis) is NOT a mute protagonist. He doesn't speak often, but he does carry on conversations with Prophet, Major Strickland, Psycho, and a few others. This is also true when you're playing as Psycho in the Warhead expansion. In fact, Alcatraz is the only mute protagonist in the entire series.
@rtyui1363 жыл бұрын
I definitely remember Nomad speaking but I can't for the life of me remember anything he says. He's Generico McGoodGuy. Prophet and Phsycho had some more personality for sure, mostly Psycho in the first game but Prophet at least has a kickass voice actor to back his lines up.
@StarkeRealm3 жыл бұрын
@@rtyui136 Yeah, Prophet's voice actor is really good. I'm actually kinda disappointed the guy doesn't get more work. Most of what I remember from Nomad is when he gets mouthy with Strickland a couple times, and when he's reporting to JSOC after Prophet is taken. To be fair, I'd actually say his blandness is a positive trait. He doesn't really get in the way of immersion, but also doesn't come across as a complete idiot when people are talking to him. Hell, his orders to clear out the harbor AAs are because he's like, "sounds easy enough," when Strickland's explaining the situation. Though, he's easily the weakest member of Raptor Squad as a character (with the possible exception of Aztec, who's only personality is, "the aliens ate me!")
@rtyui1363 жыл бұрын
@@StarkeRealm To some extent I agree. I don't think Nomad being kind of a blank slate is necessarily a bad thing as far as a protagonist for your new IP goes. Would you say Psycho's personality had any major effect on your enjoyment of Warhead? I never did get around to playing it
@astrovix21244 жыл бұрын
You didn’t miss much of the plot by skipping out on the first game. The Ceph first appeared on Earth in 2020 on a remote island that ended in a large battle, where a “mothership” was destroyed. The first time you encounter them is in a zero-g section inside a buried ship. They don’t have any sort of power armor to allow them to function in other conditions. Outside of the ship they use drones, robots, and large mech suits. Tara is the daughter of a man named major Strickland in the first game, who commanded the player via an aircraft carrier. Knowing this, the plot twist with her is even worse. Prophet was a side character in the first game, but the most involved of your squad. He helped you fight the North Koreans and Ceph. He was the leader of the squad and the only other member to survive. You played as Nomad, who was not silent, but mostly just followed orders. Nomad died off screen in a comic book and was never mentioned again.

I actually think there's a lot of narrative potential in Alcatraz. Spoilers for Crysis 2 and 3, i... guess, but since Prophet basically just replaces Alcatraz from his own brain, I'm imagining a genuinely really cool plot thread where Alcatraz and Prophet fight over his body, with the former losing more and more of himself and resenting Prophet for it, and the latter adopting an apologetic but 'for the greater good' attitude about it. And, to be fair, one of the comics or books or whatever has Alcatraz relinquishing control to Prophet under the idea that it's the right thing to do, but where's that juicy conflict? Where's Alcatraz holding on desperately to stop his mind from being overridden? Also, uh, what makes Prophet more uniquely qualified to fight the aliens, exactly? He's fought them before, yes, but Alcatraz kicks a LOT of ass without Prophet. The only help he has was the Nanosuit for a lot of the first half, so the dude definitely doesn't stand out as especially suited towards being a meat puppet rather than The Guy in The Suit. Which means you can make BOTH more interesting characters by keeping Prophet's justification... but reframing it as a weak excuse for why Alcatraz should roll over and let Prophet stay alive. I dunno, braindeath plots skeeve me out in the best possible way, and it's just disappointing to see the wasted potential. I guess Cyberpunk kinda scratched that itch, at least. Probably why I did genuinely enjoy that game, despite its flaws.
@tamim4927 Жыл бұрын
Are you sure alcatraz is still alive in there? Psycho literally screams at prophet in 3 for walking around with a dead body inside him. I hated the game for it. I found it disgusting that we were literally walking around with a dead body inside the suit which prophet is puppeteering. 2 also makes it clear that the suit is alcatrazs life support.
@antiamericangraffiti11 ай бұрын
It WAS his life support. Alcatraz dies at the end of 2, when Phrophet gains full control but otherwise I agree. It would have been way cooler, imo, if Alcatraz actually spoke and objected to the situation he was forcibly placed in while near death at the beginning of the game. Him not having any reaction to the fact that he's basically dead and the suit is keeping him alive really sucks. Besides ocasional flashbacks of Phrophets life since he was the last wearer of that particular suit I kinda wish he wasn't involved beyond that.

I don’t see why the Ceph were written as a hive mind. I’ve even gone as far as reading the book for Crysis 2, and it’s still not really justified, or even properly confirmed. Cephalopods and other similar species like octopus are actually very individually intelligent. It would have been cooler to see them in a hyper advanced federation, or there could only be one big Ceph kraken that’s taken up residence in the city, trying to make humans eliminate each other.

As mute protags go, I at least appreciate the fact that they mention during a scan from Ghould (iirc) that Alcatraz is basically near-death, lungs and vocal cords shattered from the intro attack, which is why he is mute. I completely agree that an in-game UI health meter could establish this earlier and show you really how fucked up Alcatraz really is during the entire game. And the suit is repairing him whilst simultaneously merging him with the Prophet consciousness, so restoring his vocals is second priority.

Wow, I can't believe Richard K Morgan was involved as a writer for this. He wrote Altered Carbon, which is a cyberpunk neonoir about the murder of an immortal one percenter who survived getting his head blown off, because in the future everyone has an implant to digitize their consciousness and can easily download it into another body, and while the murderer did destroy this implant, being super rich means you keep back ups in your own personal satellite. Its a pretty good book, and the later books also delve into the mysterious alien civilization that inhabited mars in the past, the alien civilization they got into a war with and probably wiped each other out with biological weapons. They're not really the focus of it, though, thankfully it doesn't become about the precursor aliens who definitely weren't humans but were actually humans all along. It got an okay adaption on netflix, with a really bad second season with anthony mackie that completely missed the point with the aliens. The Gunship song is based on this series.

The first game had many problems, not even accounting for how hard it was to run, but it had ambition, it was amazing to use the suits varied powers in the giant open ended areas... Not to mention the multiplayer and the modding. And yeah, the story and missions kinda got meh after the big mountain twist, but the first 2/3rds is still amazing. Crysis 2 sanded away all the cool stuff just so it could be a slightly sci-fi modern military shooter with a focus on cinematic set-pieces and a bog-standard multiplayer hoping to compete with CoD.

Never played Warhead, but I've heard it's even better than 1, and I didn't care enough to play 3. I did like the ending theme in Crysis 2 though. I've heard good things about his books ("Altered Carbon" and "13", specifically), though I don't think I've read any of them. To (maybe) play devil's advocate, it's possible he was handed the list of setpieces the "director" wanted in the game, and just had to come up with a narrative that ties all of them together. I wouldn't know though.

I was really disappointed with Crysis 2 after loving the first game and Warhead. A few of the bad aspects you mention, like just one vehicle sequence and the chambered rounds was way more polished in the first game. Crysis 2 is one of the best examples of a "consol-ified" game, up there with Deus Ex Infiinity War.

Do not worry about not having played Crysis (which is a better game IMO), I remember playing Crysis 2 years ago and for the entire game i wondered what happened, who are those people and really what does the game have to do with Crysis 1? :-P
