I had no idea who Tom Waits was then, and I had no idea why a guy was sitting around smoking in a Penthouse pictorial. But NGL - he looked like the coolest guy in the world then. There are No Excuses for what he did, but I can predict that he's going through some form of a midlife crisis. I imagine that losing his band mate and best friend (Former FF Drummer Taylor Hawkins) and losing his Mom within the same year really put him in an emotional freefall. Again, not an excuse to cheat, there are no excuses for cheating, especially cheating on his wife of 23 years and betraying his 3 daughters, but I think he's been unraveled by having to deal with the deaths of the 2 of the closest people in his life. Not the most surprising none of us really know what a "celeb" is like unless we personally connect anyway. Perception is a fickle thing in Daves case he cone out of one of the biggest bands known to man via Nirvana then fronted one of the other biggest bands in Foo Fighters. We all have a mask to varying degrees, especially famous people, because they have to sell tickets somehow. Hard work is one thing but when you're on that pedestal, keeping skeletons in a closet is a risky business that we're all privy to. Yeah I don't see him getting respect back from people, at least not from those within your community. Even before that, I saw him get dissed by John Joseph due to concert restrictions during a "time", that JJ described as "discriminatory".
