May.15 -- David Rubenstein sits down with Marriott International Inc. CEO and President Arne Sorenson for a broad conversation about how Sorenson became the first non-Marriott family member to be CEO, the challenges of leading a global hospitality company in the Trump era, and how he manages dual threats from Airbnb and Google. Sorenson also spills the beans on the "real" story about room service, the mini bar, and why he doesn't care if guests take the soap. The interview took place on April 10 in Washington.

I loved how honest he was. I have found that a lot of CEO’s give evasive answers and beat around the bush. He was very transparent.

Oh the irony.. Both Hilton and Mr. Sorenson come from Norwegian families, yet all we get in Norway is a godforsaken Moxy in the middle of a field outside of Oslo..

Marriott employees are turning to UNIONS because Marriott are NOT taking care of them, the "take care of the employee so that the employee can take care of the guess" is only a company slogan!

*What a delusional CEO. If you think Airbnb is cheap then you should really step down, as you don't understand the business and the competition. Airbnb also has luxury apartments and houses in most of the major cities around the world. So Airbnb also caters to those customers who are looking for a luxury stay. There is a reason why Marriott started "Homes & Villas" - **homes-and-villas.marriott.com/**, because you know that Airbnb is your competitor and is eating the piece of the pie, which will only get bigger and bigger over time. I used to be a Marriott loyalist, but I haven't stepped into a hotel for over 7 years now, during which time, I have traveled to over 50 countries around the world.*

These are professional hotels, whereas airbnb are households renting, there is a big difference. For personal travels one might not want pro services and save on costs, but corporate travelers and affordable income segments will always use professional hotels.

@@Cacofonixravi I am a corporate traveler myself and I use Airbnb all the time. Airbnb has a ton of inventory of apartments where you can receive all kinds of luxuries, including having your own 24x7 butler. There are people who would like to feel at home instead of staying at "professional" hotels. Airbnb is making billions in revenue, not to mention they are profitable now. Corporate travelers are not the only ones who stay at these professional hotels. There are a lot of customers who are ditching these hotels and are opting for Airbnb.

@@stephaniehale946 I think you make a good point. But honestly I think both companies can succeed. There are a large percentage of people particularly older people with a bit of money who are more comfortable using a service. Air in my opinion is probably more appealing to younger people with less disposable income.

I think when the CEO said "cheap", he's referring to the value of what you're paying for. For example, If you were to stay in a hotel that is comparable to the quality of a room that you'd be getting in an Airbnb, you'd be usually paying a hefty premium. Of course, there are tons of luxury villas/apartments on Airbnb.
