A bit late to the DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor game are we? Maybe ... but that doesn't mean it's not still a GREAT piece of kit. My take on it is it really is a bit misunderstood, and yes, there is the clunky middle part with the multicam buttons andd all, it's not perfect for everything, but it is perfect for what it's supposed to do - and that is to provide you with an efficient tool for starting your edits in the right way, in the cut page, focusing on assembling the pieces for your next video masterpiece.

First of all, having your parents alive at 50 is amazing. Never take that for granted. Having them still give your birthday presents is a gift in itself. Blessings. Secondly, your lighting and video quality are amazing.

I am very grateful for them being around for sure, and now it’s my turn to pay back for all the help, carrying washing machines, fixing the plumbing and all that :) And thank you, I try to do my best to explore and experiment, sometimes I don’t find the time to *do everything* and just press record, and sometimes I go the extra 3 miles :) And thanks for watching and sorry for the late reply, the community feature in the studio app isn’t too great when it comes to notifications :/

Totally agree. I never used the cut page. Always started in the edit page. Thought "What is this cut page thingy good for? In the edit page I can do everything it offers and even so much more?!?". But now this seems to me like saying "If I want to carve a chess piece, why should I take an axe into the forest to cut down the tree for it when I have a carving knife - it can cut wood and much more!?!". The Speed Editor forced me to use the cut page. Now I don't want to miss it - even when I don't have the Speed Editor at hand. But with this device it's a blast. However, excellent video - top production quality for a 100 subs channel - and I have the utmost respect for the way you speak into the camera. Well done and keep it up!

Thanks for that lovely comment, I try my best :) And yeah, the right tool for the job does wonders :) I used to think it would still take the same amount of time to edit everything regardless of how I did things since everything had to be done anyway, but after segmenting things up it's way easier to stay on point and not do things I have to re-do anyway down the line - and using the cut page really helped keeping that focus, and the wheel ... I actually had a standalone wheel several years ago, a usb wheel for timeline stuff, used it to edit music and videos and stuff, but then drives wasn't updated anymore and I just completely forgot about it. The wheel just feels *right*, swooshing back and forth - and the way the trim in/trim out buttons work when your close to a cut between 2 clips, one adjusting the end of the first clip and the other the start of the next clip - attention to tiny details like that makes editing a joy :)

Yeah, isn’t it great :) The tactile feel of the scroll wheel alone almost makes editing fun ;) And thank you for the kind words, I try my best to explain juuust a bit more than many ‘tubers, but not overexplain (which I do have a tendency to do, editing does some magic removing those parts ;) The «set», aka my workshop, is a work in progress, like *all the time*, but it’s a functional but «messy» space, much like my brain ;) I’m working in a big speed editor video going through all the features on both cut page (as well as some recommendations on process/segmentation of workflow for best results) and how I use it on the edit page, and when one should consider the full size editor keyboard instead of the speed editor especially for the cut page, will probably be out in a couple of weeks so stay tuned :)

I agree the speed editor / cut page combo while bringing footage in via source tape is such an efficient method of laying out the timeline . I just got the speed editor last August, and as I travel and make videos sometimes I just need to get the footage off my cameras, and get it on a time line in a rough cut form quickly the speed editor makes that process a lot faster and enjoyable.

Exactly what I’m talking about :) The right tool for the right job at the right time :) Getting those quick segments and parts down, some small b-roll edits in separate timelines, dropped in later in a bigger timeline, getting that raw material whittled down into managable chunks of video during a 10-15 minute break rather than chugging away at a huge timeline, then pieceing it all together in the edit page like one is supposed to - so much more managable and the speed editor is perfect for those quick little segments :) Thanks for watching and sharing your experience with the speed editor :)

@AndreSjoberg 7 ай бұрын
Hahahahaha, thanks man :) Editing on a DVR sounds like how I was editing music mixes back in the days on cassettes using a double deck cassette player to stop the music at the beat, find the next song, pause it on the beat and press play-record at the same time on both decks hopefully getting a beat mix ;) Not to mention hours of copying C64 games onto cheap Dixon chain branded cassettes obtained while on family vacation to the UK - good times indeed :) The cut page is genuins for quick assemblies and quick cuts all around, and also for trimming down footage super fast, and together with a scroll wheel that’s super tactile it almost becomes fun :) Working on a new video right now that will deep dive into the cut page and speed editor and my preferred ways of workflow for it, and what types of editing is best suited for the cut page vs the edit page, and the speed editor vs the editor full featured keyboard with rotary wheel and some of the speed editor buttons in the side :)

I find it basically unusable for a single reason that could be solved so easily. When trying to cut your video to audio (music) you need at least one audio track to be untouched and unless they already fixed it, that will not play nice with ripple editing (especially ripple delete/trim) because it wont close the newly created gaps since the locked audio layer makes it technically not a gap.
@AndreSjoberg
@AndreSjoberg 7 ай бұрын
Aaaaaah, yeah, that’s a very valid point indeed, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment :) I had the same problem myself and figured out a way to work that still gives me a lot of the benefits of the cut page / speed editor and using the dedicated keys on the editor, that works both in the cut page as well as the edit page. What I do is use the «place on top» key instead of append, which when I do that it places the next video clip after the previous on top of the music track (which I’ve locked) (and having the «video only» button activated it only inserts video, not audio) and then building the video track that way. And then, when doing a second or third pass, trimming and maybe inserting things you usually don’t want all the video after the spot you are editing in to move, since some of those clips might be synced already to other parts of the track, so I then use a combination of slip and roll and trim in/out and the move function to manipulate things around. And ripple delete now *not* moving the whole track is actually a good thing, especially if I’ve done rough edit to the beat and are now editing certain parts or segments inside the edit. That specific scenario is actually a really good topic for a followup video, since I do make edits to music tracks but often do the rough selection in the cut page and fine tune things later in the edit page using the techniques I described, thanks for the idea and thanks for watching and commenting :)

@AndreSjoberg
@AndreSjoberg 6 ай бұрын
Sweet :) As for the zoom option, you are aware the full timeline is always available for quick navigasjon above the elastic timeline yeah? just checking to make sure :) I to was sort of «should have had that» in the beginning, but as I’ve gotten used to colorcoding clips and using markers to know where things are I’m less and less missing the option, especially after focusing on just building the cut in the cut page, and *not* getting into the kind of editing which should be done on the editing page that requires zooming in and out to jump between sections of my video in the timeline. Focusing on just building the segment from clips, moving on to the next one, until the whole timeline is done, and then trimming each sequence more in detail sometimes in the cut page, and *then* jumping into the edit page for a more «full view» and editing that the edit page is for. of course: if you find yourself doing *a lot* of editing in the edit page the editor keyboard is the tool you want for both pages, but if budget doesn’t allow for that using the speed editor together with a keyboard is a good backup solution for the edit page, a little bit clunkier but more budget friendly :) It’s all a process of figuring out what one needs and upgrading when budgets allow for it :)

Yeah, I totally understand that aspect, it would be nice for it to be a multi-software-device - but at the same time it is the «DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor», and Blackmagic make tools for their own software. Once you make a generic tool you will have loads of extra work and issues with making drivers, support different software plugins and buckets of more things to keep track off. It doesn’t make sense from a business perspective to go from making «complete package systems» to «generic controller surface»-manufacturer, it would just introduce a lot of noise :/

So if you thought the approach to using the speed editor and the cut page and what hou can gain from it *sounds* like a good idea, the followup video should probably be to your liking :) What I’m working on specifically is taking a practical approach, so instead of just showing each feature and key and what it does (like many do on youtube, not really showing why, just *how*) we’ll edit a small «music video» hopefully covering all bases from start to finish with a couple of passes with shot selection and a rough draft, fine tuning the draft and cutting it in time to the music, using just the keys available on the speed editor as much as possible to cover all functions :)
