I carried one of those rifles in the tote on my quad. It was small enough to easily fit and I shot a lot of grouse, rabbits and ptarmigan with it. Maybe I liked it because I’m just a big kid at heart.

I bought my grandson a S&W 15-22 for his first rifle. He was 6 when I bought it for him and at 9 he's very proficient with it. Some people don't feel comfortable starting a kid with a semiautomatic rifle as their first gun but I wanted something that could grow with him and would have a similar manual of arms to a regular ar.

Yup! My oldest turned 40 last year, my youngest 37. What blows me away is that my darling bride turned 65 five days after me and she’s still hotter than 95% of the women 20 years her junior. My body feels 65 because I’ve busted my butt , got hurt in the military and I fight two serious autoimmune conditions that are degenerative. Life is degenerative! But life is worth the hurt!

My first 22 was similar- single shot bolt action Remington M33 with the pull plunger. It was the most accurate 22 I ever shot with open sights- took a pile of squirrels, rabbits, and doves with it. The single shot plunger guns are a great option for kids.

young dude keep it in the family forever. i'm an old man of 62 now and remember my first rifle, it was alot like this. it was a full size savage stevens, but the action worked like this. load a round, then have to cock it by pulling it back. i have a vague memory of it having some kinda sleeve on the back of the bolt that when id rotate it it would block the bolt and act as a safety. the only thing id have different on it would be a v back sight instead of a peep. alas i let an older distant cousin talk me out of it and have regretted it every since.

@@WHOTEEWHO I just had the chance to watch and those groupings are something to truly appreciate. The thing about it not ejecting in the first try sometimes I found to be happening for 2 reasons. 1 - the slot where the ejector arm goes into when you close the bolt gets dirty pretty easy and it cause the ejector arm to not clip onto the rim of the round, so that's why it tends to eject on the second or third try because the gunk got moved out of the way. 2 - waxed ammo in a dirty chamber grips really good and with the spring tension of the ejector arm being kind of week, it causes the ejector arm the slide over the rim of the cartridge. This also happens sometimes but more rarely with non-waxed ammo.

I'd love to see one made for adults but keeping the same little youth size. Get rid of that "pull back" charging style bolt safety & add something like a built in, 5 round, internal magazine, like a lot of larger caliber bolt guns have. A tiny little rig like that would make a PERFECT, lightweight, compact, squirrel gun. Could easily carry it around camp & on hikes. Talk about fun. Great video WTW, thanks 👍

My first rifle was a 1923 Marlin Model 93 lever-action 30-30 (all matching serial numbered parts). It’s still a sweet rifle. My dad took it back from me after a decade and gave it to my brother because I wanted to replace some missing barrel band screws and retire the original stock. 336 parts fit the Model 93 and I had planned on putting a Realtree APG stock on it. Nope. I did get to slightly polish the action before he took it though. I cleaned it up and made it buttery smooth. Haven’t seen it almost 12 years. I’m 34. He also had no problem taking my $40 Weaver mount and $60 rings. (Yes, someone decades before me drilled and tapped the receiver…..)

You need to crank in all the Zoomies!!!! When you take your son out for squirrels and rabbit, he can shoot the Davy Crickett and you can use your Dam Ol' Boom. I had a Stevens Crackshot for my first rifle. Really fun to shoot. One of my uncles had an old Remington Single shot. His dad would give him one boo lot. He had to bring in a rabbit to get another boo lot. Taught him marksmanship. That was back in the late 1920s and early 1930s in Wyoming.

It is an awesome little rifle no matter what age you acquire it. I bought one at the tender age of 37, and it accompanies me and my black lab on walks deep into the wilderness. It is so very light that it does not burden me and I keep it in a little ozark hydration backpack that I repurposed by removing the water bladder. The barrel fits perfectly down the little hole in the pack bottom and the stock peaks out the top just slightly. Mine is in 22 magnum, stainless, with a camo synthetic stock. I chose this rifle specifically because in my state we are allowed to hunt hogs during small game season, but we have to use the same firearm that is legal for the small game. 22 magnum is a killer. So it gives me like 5 months to possibly bring home some bacon. I have a cheap little scope on it, but it is a freakin tack driver.

My oldest daughter's first rifle was one of these crickets. We all enjoyed shooting it! If you can find some 22 CB rounds they sound like regular 22 suppressed out of these, and up close the low velocity doesn't make a big shift in point of impact. Great for training young kids. For my other two kids I ended up going with the Savage Rascal when they were old enough. At the time it had several nice upgrades that the cricket didn't have yet. Their accutrigger is hard to beat.

Thanks another great video! I bought my then 6 year old grandson a cricket 2 years ago for his first learner firearm. Every time he visits we go to our range for a hour of proper handling/use and then some shooting wild beast, space aliens and assorted monsters . He just loves his cricket now that he's learning to slow down aim and proper trigger usage. He's pretty accurate with it out to the 50 yard mark with the factory sights. I bought his cricket at a local sporting good store for $91 out the door on clearance best $91 I've spent in years. How many of you remember your first firearm that you fired or the first one you owned? The first firearm I ever fire was a Paragon 12 double, Dad had to help me hold it up " I was 4" to fire , the first I worked "cut grass for 2 years" for to buy was a Model 81 marlin, I still own both the Paragon and Marlin all these years later. Dad ordered the Marlin through the old Gander Mountain mail order for me, my Grandpa was the original "He and Dad swapped" owner of the Paragon and he mail ordered it from the Montgomery Ward Christmas wish book right after WWII yeah I'm that old! lol!! Sometimes I wish I was the little boy again out shooting with Grandpa and Dad.

Your boys will love this. They clearly can operate a full sized bing bang, but this will fit their little hands much better. 😊

I never shot one of those but it looks like a wicked fun little rifle. I like that extra safe bolt too. Very appropriate for a kid's first gun. Awesome video Hoot. You sure you ain't gonna just buy that Cricket for yourself though?

When I saw the title I was hoping it was going to be a video of your actual first rifle. The Cricket is a nice little gun though. It reminds me of the little Cooey single I first shot with.

I love the Cricket rifle both my sons have one but I bought my daughter a Savage Rascal it's basically the same thing but the Savage is a lot better it has a thumb safety instead of a plunger style you get along more for just a few dollars more.

I've seen these for sale for about $99 , but never bought one . This video makes me want one now . I think this would make a great stealth backyard pest gun loaded with 22LR subsonic cartridges . Those 22 Shorts are hard to come by , and I don't believe anyone makes 22 Longs anymore . I've tried 22 caliber airguns with little satisfaction . The 22 air guns start out costing more than a Cricket , are less powerful , and use spring pistons for power . The spring piston system creates two recoil impulses that wreck scopes not made for it , and require the shooter to use the " Artillery Hold " grip for accuracy . The cheapest 22 air gun I tried out was a $300 spring piston gun PCP ( Pre Charged Pneumatic) gun . The pump didn't work as advertised , the air chamber didn't hold pressure , so the gun was useless . Even the guy at the SCUBA shop couldn't help me , so I got my money back from the gun store . Reliable air guns cost more than 22 rimfire guns anyway . Thank You , Adam . Maybe your friend could let you hold his gun a little longer and try out some subsonic ammo in this little shooter . Those slow moving slugs can be quite accurate within appropriate ranges without a lot of fuss from the neighbors .

Bought my kids a Crickett years ago. To this day I still need to find a gunsmith to fix it. Cost me a little more than $100 new. Jams every shot, won't extract, and all rounds have to be peeled out. Shells get stuck in the chamber. This was the first and last time I will buy one for my kids. Instead, now using the AR platform with a BCA .22lr upper. Found it likes CCI mostly. Haven't found another round it likes.
