An absolutely fantastic movie. It has everything, thrills, politics, sex, tech and it looks fantastic.perfect casting too at every level. I own a dvd copy and reach for it often...never fails to make an impact...I also love how the world looked in the mid sixties...fashion, cars and it's oddly hard reassuring coldness of the times..I will enjoy it forever .always.

Such an absolute pleasure to discover this channel, and loving the back catalogue. Grew up on genre films at a provincial west country cinema in the 1970s and 80s, so this couldn't be more up my street. Thanks for all the great content. I recently rewatched this film for what must be the 20th time and it never gets stale, great premise and source material, superbly urgent documentary style film making and a wonderful cast.

It might not work for every viewer, but the main thing the movie did well was being several kinds of movie over the course of its runtime, with the Jackal being villain or anti-hero at different moments. It was a political drama, then an action movie, a thriller, a police procedural, and finally the Jackal becomes an unstoppable and inhuman horror movie monster.

I think much of the film's appeal is in the way it integrates different genre elements into a coherent and kinetic thriller. The theme that holds it all together for me is the "lone man on the run" staple much beloved of Hitchcock and others. Thanks for commenting, Peter. T.

Some good analysis and laughs in this one, thank you. It is indeed a great film. I'd rate it as one of the 50 best of the 1970s, which is very high praise. Fox's Jackal shows other small bits of humanity or not being a complete sociopath. For example, after he kills the aristocratic woman, there is a brief sigh or gesture that shows he did it because he had to but wishes that hadn't been the case. And when he sees the couple going at it in the woods when he steels their license plates; a stone-cold psycho probably wouldn't show that kind of human reaction. Didn't he have to go on to do the job if he wanted the rest of the money? As I recall, it was half at the start and half at completion. Still, I'm sure a professional like the Jackal would want to finish what he started. The great Cyril Cusack and his usual five minutes or so of perfection.

@@tonybush555 How true your words are. What has happened to modern Film-making that it almost guarantees disappointment? The last time I checked, Cinemas were offering nought but; Marvel, Remakes, Reboots. Re-imaginings, Revivals, Prequels, Sequels and old TV titles.. Instead of original, challenging stories that inspire us, we have copies of facsimiles of vague memories thrown in our faces.

"Bonjour, Toulouse." Love it! Triffik review, Mr. T, as always. Thank God Tarantula didn't "remake" it. It would have been even worse than Bob Willis's version. E-writing of Crappywood, along with The Italian Stallion Job with Sly and co., another dire modernisation of a classic thriller (Charade, 1963) is The Truth about Charlie, starring the spawn of Robin Askwith, Marky Wahlberger. If you could find a way of reviewing Charade, then I'll support Wales for ever in the 6 nations ( I am one-eighth Welsh anyway, which is probably most of my side-stepping leg.) Two performances that always linger are those of Cyril Cusack and Tony Britton. Mr. Cusack is great as the gunsmith, interested only in his craftsmanship and satisfying the customer, irrespective of their intentions. Mr. Britton is equally top-notch as the sceptical Inspector, dealing with both endless red tape and Donald Sinden's occasional throatal rumblings. Michael Lonsdale is wonderfully anonymous. Possibly an "up from the ranks" copper who is much more intelligent than those on the committee to which he reports (including his own boss!) Interestingly, Britton and Lonsdale play essentially the same role: dogged dogsbodies, doing the job that no-one would want. Both triumph in their equally tired, stubborn, cynical ways. Would Britton's character have been promoted to Chief Inspector and would Lonsdale's Lebel have been moved to, say, Marseilles as Commissioner? Eddie Fox is spot on as the unknown, unnamed Jackal. His years of theatre training and steady film and television work contribute greatly towards making his performance of drawling charm and cold-eyed ambition so unforgettable. What the Jackal does is reprehensible, yet you want him to get away with it. A so-called star actor would not have been credible. As I write this, it occurs to me that a contemporary of Mr. Fox, Anthony Valentine, would have been a suitable alternative. Zinnemann and Fox. Ideal for each other in this film. Onwards to the next one, Sire!

Okay, Tony, I'm going to make a confession here. It's in order for you to feel a little better about seeing 'Exorcist: The Awakening'. First, in my defence, I bought 2 blu-rays for a combined euro 25 last week......'2001: A Space Odyssey' and 'Citizen Kane'. This at least should mitigate what's coming next. Right....deep breath.....Last night I watched 'My Awkward Sexual Adventure', a 2012 Canadian romantic comedy. How I even know about this movie is a convoluted story that's beyond the scope of this comment. You know what?!! I actually liked it. I laughed out loud a dozen times (something very rare for me to do). I thought the two lead actors played well off each other and that the whole thing was done with an almost refreshing lack of audio/visual onslaught. I'm not claiming it's Billy Wilder-like, but I genuinely got behind it as the little film that could. So, there, I've publicly humiliated myself and just remember it was all so that you could feel a little less bad about seeing that Exorcist cash-grab.

Okay. I know about 'My Awkward Sexual Adventure', because I think Emily Hampshire is really cute. A short clip got into my YT recommended list for some reason. Honestly, the only worse thing I could admit to would be that I took it upon myself to re-edit 'The Magnificent Ambersons', while Welles was in Brazil and then framed Robert Wise as the culprit.

it really is first rate.if you take the premise an assassination of degaulle already a realty on several attempts and run with it this is what you get.unlike virtually every other film on the subject of assassination it simply sits down explains how its to be done and equally important how its to be detected.hitchcock had toyed with a similar idea earlier but decided the movie if made factually would not excite the audience.unlike suddenly or black sunday and others of their ilk the jackal is doing it for money and is extremely capable. we learn nothing about him than that.there is no hidden reason like vietnam for dern in black sunday being a mentally unstable 4f army reject like sinatra in suddenly or brainwashed like harvey in the manchurian candidate.the pleasure of the movie is hes simply a guy doing a job.the fascination comes from how he carries it out.tension is added when the police find out about it! yet again zinneman resists how hollywood would solve it a point the remake missed entirely ,he simply shows how countries pre computor would in the real world tackle it! no groups of navy seals heavily armed special forces jets helicopters etc with a granite jawed hero with a special gun. just michelle lonsdale a plodding efficient cop who realises if he gets it wrong the shit is landing on him.the minutia of the inquiry grips us ,checking visitors passes and id cards one by one by hand .road blocks tv appeals even bugging the cabinet! its real down to earth police work tedious time consuming but if this really happened how it would be done! despite all this the tragedy is averted by chance and lonsdales beat cop instincts .even though everything has been done he stll personally checks the perimeter.even at the climax mystery continues .tony brittains very good scotland yard man has identified the jackal.hes buisiness man charles calthorpe CHACAL get it?except in a lovely twist it isnt .superbly mounted movie great performances a documentary like feel.if the jackal had been after de gaulle this is how it would have played out .
