backstory... in 1969, Allen Klein negotiated a new contract with EMI on behalf of the Beatles. While Klein was dastardly on many other things, in the moment, this was a better contract for the Beatles as it had a much better royalty rate for them. This new contract covered all Beatles AND solo works until 1976. Approaching 1976, all of the Beatles would have been free to negotiate their own solo contracts (and technically, a new Beatles contract if they ever made new recordings) going forward. Paul re-signed with EMI. Part of his new EMI deal gave Paul 3% more Beatles royalties (Beatles recordings made before 1976). The other 3 still made the same percentage as before, but EMI gave Paul 3% from their cut. So say the original deal was... EMI 40%, Paul 15%, John 15%, George 15%, Ringo 15%. After Paul's new deal, it was EMI 37%, Paul 18%, John 15%, George 15%, Ringo 15%. For years, the other Beatles didn't know that Paul made more. In 1983 (I believe), the others (George, Ringo, Yoko) found out about the 3% and were very upset with Paul. By 1988, the 3% issue was still a problem. Lawsuits were happening and unfortunately there had been a contentious meeting prior to the Rock Hall of Fame induction. Hence, Paul... who felt he had done nothing wrong and was being ganged up on... decided not to attend. The silver lining is that because of these lawsuits, the books of EMI's accounting were opened to scrutiny. They found out that... surprise surprise... EMI/Capitol had been underpaying the Beatles. Not only did EMI/Captiol agree to give George, Ringo and Yoko the same 3% that Paul had, the Beatles now had leverage on EMI/Capitol to allow the Beatles to have total control over their own recordings. This allowed Apple to become a working entity again and oversee the Beatles' work. So because of the 3% troubles, by 1990 or so, the Beatles house was finally put in order and Apple was back! And then we got the BBC recordings, Anthology and all of the cool stuff we have now. Since then, The Beatles family has (mostly) been at peace. Though I am curious about what's happening behind the scenes on this Now and Then release! :)

Interesting facts I never knew. Thanks for sharing. Paul has always been a bit sneaky regarding the Beatles finances. When the Beatles wanted to buy the majority ownership of Northern songs from Dick James they had to put up their shares as collateral to get the funding from the bank. However Paul was very reluctant and Klein found out why - against the verbal promise/agreement with John, Paul had been buying up shares without telling the others. John went ballistic and George and Ringo were none too happy. In the end it did not matter, but that caused another rift between John & Paul. In 1976 Paul signed the biggest contract in musical history with Capitol records. It was in the region of $7 million a year. It was surpassed soon after by Bob Dylan's Capitol contract. Both deals nearly bankrupt Capitol records!

Paul didn't sell the back catalog to Michael Jackson, or to anyone else. Paul had spoken to Jackson about his own desire to buy various catalogs of artist*s songs. Jackson, in turn , bought the Beatles catalog. Paul wasn't afforded the opportunity to even bid for the songs. This was what brought an end to any future collaboration between the two and created a rift in their friendship. As for Paul being "overbearing", that sounds more like the narrative pushed by Rolling Stone, who seemed to lead the anti~Paul charge after the latter announced his departure from the Beatles. Never mind that the other three had all left the group previously, Paul became the villain because he announced it publicly and sued to dissolve the band. Without that lawsuit, all would have been left penniless like so many others. The others had the same opportunity that Paul took when Brian died. The band used to brag that all their decisions were made as a democracy. Yet, for awhile, at least, it seems they were content enough to leave it to McCartney to decide, "Okay, it's time to make another record." And they usually just went along. There are a couple irksome things the anti McCartney camp do. One, they fail to recognize that he was a workaholic and would often have his ideas worked out in his head. John was busy with Yoko and drugs on top of widely bring regarded as lazy. Neither George nor Ringo liked to practice their instruments, per George. Though, by all that has been said, Ringo really didn't need to practice. George irked at least one engineer, Geoff Emerick, because he used studio time to practice. The other hypocrisy is that George gets praise for being a perfectionist. Yet, Paul is criticized as overbearing for that same trait and for voicing that a particular song isn't how it sounds to him in his head. I'm about as big a Beatles fan as anyone, of all of them. Take one away and it isn't the Beatles, affirmation of George saying they would not reunite as long as John was dead. It wouldn't be the Beatles. All that being said, they were/are human with human flaws like everyone else.

I think a thing that needs to be remembered is in the 80s, the Beatles were still selling huge. People were replacing records and 8-tracks with tapes and CDs, and the Beatles were due a royalty cut. Now, in the 60s, the Beatles were signed to Apple Records, but were published in the US by Capitol Records. By the 80s, Capitol had the publishing rights to all the Beatles songs, but only had McCartney under contract. Ringo was with RCA and Harrison was with his own label, Dark Horse. So, when McCartney did his solo contract with Capitol, he increased his royalties to both the writer and performer share, since the vast majority of the songs were written by Lennon and McCartney. Ringo, Harrison, and Lennon's estate were entitled to just the performer share because they did not negotiate a new deal with Capitol. This was not a secret deal, it was not meant to hurt the others, it was just the cost of Capitol Records signing a singer that would move a ton of music to people who had lived through the Beatles and were now in their 30s to early 40s, prime disposable income age at the time. I am not 100% sure how EMI came to acquire the publishing rights, but I am confident that the terms of that purchase were to give the whole band the writer and performer rights that McCartney negotiated in 86 or 87.

Excellent video and well put together. But for me, I think we know too much about the Beatles. What they meant to me as an 11 year old in 1979 will never be taken away, but it's been tainted over the years knowing he didn't like him, or he sued them, or they sued him, and she said this and that. Never has the term, "going back to simpler times" ever been more important. However, much like the Get Back film, I'm beginning to see more than ever before. I'm beginning to learn things like how Paul was in the right this whole time, or Yoko didn't break up the Beatles, or there was more to John and Paul's reunion in the late 70s. It glosses over all the ugly we've been told all those decades ago and give me back some of that initial joy they brought me as a child.

"As a part of the Beatles McCartney tried to steer them in the right direction with business. They ignored him." - This is 100% true. But the way Paul handled it was not the best. Paul always "leaned" into the Beatles in a micromanaging way, not condescending but close. The fact that the other members showed their frustration with Paul during the time of the band is pretty telling, especially with the new Get Back Documentary that came out. But anyone can go back and look it all up, whether its creativity, financial, etc they all didn't like the way Paul handled it. I personally think he was selfish. The fact that he didn't at least have a conversation with the other Beatles (who had their work and creativity on every album) is sad. Instead, he just took the extra 3% and didn't say a peep until the other Beatles found out. I think deep down inside Paul stubbornly and naively felt "he" was the Beatles which explains his outward micromanagement with the band during their recordings.

@@Pneuma3339 This all goes back to Paul feeling like he had to lead the Beatles after Brian Epstein died. The other Beatles resented it eventually, but Epstein's death could have led to a break up of the group in 1967. Paul - always the most commercially-minded of the four - shouldn't have had to be responsible for looking out for the other Beatles. In fact, a big part of why they broke up was that they didn't want him to manage the group, and resisted that. No one is to blame for it. It would be really hard for ANY group to make that transition, especially one that had shared things equally among them previously.

@karlwiggins11 ай бұрын
@@Pneuma3339 well, they first tried to manage themselves after Brian Epstein, which didn't really work, because the only one interested in doing it was Paul, and the other Beatles resented him for it. Klein was a terrible choice, as he ended up ripping them off, but Paul trying to bring on Linda's dad was never going to work either. Basically, the Beatles got too big (their egos at least) for them to want to listen to anyone telling them what to do. i think in reality this is what the beatles did. in most the clips of harrison when he's talking about paul its a bit more light hearted. he even said inv the hall of fame speech that he still loves paul. he said as well that the fact that he didnt want to make music with paul isnt a personal thing, he just didnt like how paul worked on his songs and didnt want to go through that process. yes they fought about businessy stuff but in the end they all were friends still and paul got to hold george's hand for 5 hours before he died so it all worked out.

As always, George had the most wisdom when he said there can be NO Beatles without John Lennon. Case closed. Yet The Beatles Music will survive for centuries since it was born of expanded consciousness (where wisdom really lives), integrated Eastern & Western music -- thank you George -- and was loads of fun (thank you Ringo) -- and of course blessings to Paul for he has done the hard work: toured the world decade after decade spreading The Beatles Music to new generations, from young to middle-aged to elders, for all people everywhere since their Words and Music touch our hearts, let alone they had the best vocal harmonies ever (thank you Beatles), wrote the snappiest songs ever (thank you John & Paul), had the best steady drumming (thank you Ringo) and the most raunchy lead guitar (thank you George) -- THANK YOU BEATLES for waking up the world to Peace & Love & Meditation -- you watch: their work has only begun. It still breaks my heart to think what could have been, if different choices had been made by members of the band. The music that could be heard today if there hadn't been financial & rights issues, won't ever happen because of pettiness & greed. Brian (Epstein) & John were the key to it all, the glue that held everything together, so without them there could never be The Beatles. Thankfully the legacy of music will forever be timeless.

The most surprising this is they put aside their differences, used an old recording from John Lennon called "Free as a Bird," and released a new song in 1995 that became a Top 40 hit in the USA. Many years after the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony. Was it money talked? Who knows? All I know is there was one more new song that they had that was a hit.

I obviously don’t know anything that happened behind the scenes, apart from what we saw in Get Back. But it did seem like Paul ignored George a lot, and undermined him, albeit possibly unintentionally. Paul seemed quite aloof and I think he just thought him and John were the writing power and that’s the way it was. But that must have hurt George all those years. Particularly as he was seen as the “quiet Beatle”, maybe he felt overlooked, which can happen to people in peer groups and does make you build up resentment. If there’s people in the group who talk more than you and then don’t really listen when you talk, you’ll start to feel bitter. Just my two cents anyway.
@jawoody974510 ай бұрын
This is so difficult to watch. I understand. I get it, but "harmony" IS what it's all about. I'm blessed because I discovered the Beatles at 3 years of age (thanks to siblings). At 5-10 years of age, I was enveloped in Beatlemania. I had every American release, the week it was released. I couldn't wait to hear a bunch of new Beatle songs.

It's heartbreaking. The music was Eden; but being human, they screwed it up and couldn't get back there together. Why do we do that to ourselves? Holding a grudge and not forgiving is like taking poison, hoping the other person will die. Stupid egos and money that won't bring joy kept the world from hearing more Beatles music. But I suppose it's like everything else in life - ephemeral, fleeting, lightning in a bottle. So enjoy what we have, when we have it.

It's impossible to know what's going on behind the scenes here, but honestly, I feel bad for Paul here. His crime in the Beatles was not signing up with one of the biggest grifters in Beatles history with Alan Klein, and his sticking to his guns protected not only his stake, but the Beatles legacy. Everyone in the group was free to renegotiate with EMI, they just didn't. I get his decision, why turn up and face a bunch of people who are doing nothing but suing you and talking shit about you on TV? He spent most of the 70's as a punching bag for the band and the music press (and still is in some quarters), good on him for having some backbone.

I think it’s really great to see how peter Jackson’s series has rehabilitated Paul’s image. For decades, Paul was the uncool arsehole and everyone went on about how kind and saintly George was. I’ve never seen an interview with George where he wasn’t bitter and resentful. He was a fucking Beatle but it was never enough for him. When the others bitch about paul, it always comes down to him being the grown up of the band trying to heard a bunch of cats to great things. He has an artistic vision they don’t like. Or he has an idea that might require some effort or compromise. Or he has ambitions for the band and is trying to lead when everyone else can’t be bothered or wants to get stoned. I challenge anyone to find Paul bad mouthing the others. Without his ideas and work ethic, the Beatles would not have been the same. Best musician in the band too.

John and Cynthia would have divorced at some point because John was already into drugs and infidelities during their marriage BEFORE Yoko came into the picture; it was in Cynthia's book. Yoko sped up the process. They got married because Julian was on the way, and then Beatlemania hit the UK around the same time Julian was born. Cynthia knew about the affairs and drugs but wanted to keep the marriage together for their son but she finally had enough when he hooked up with Yoko.

George has had a BIG chip on his shoulder regarding McCartney ever since 67 when McCartney kind of took over the creative side of the Beatles but he never saw that the one who didn't rate him much as a songwriter or creative force was John. Look at how Paul is always playing some great parts on George's songs (whether guitar, piano, bass, backing vocals) when John is mostly absent from those recordings. What does it say about it? Paul was even there to play on I Me Mine in 1970 when the Beatles were over and done with by then and the song needed work on for the film... Where was John? In a bag somewhere, ramming down the world's throat his naive discourse about peace and childish political nonsense.

I'm not saying there was zero sarcasm when George said "we all love Paul very much," but I do think he mostly meant it genuinely and that he said it partially in reaction to the other speeches that night. Whatever issues the Beatles ever had with each other, they're the only ones who are allowed to talk shit.
