I love when Africans are treated like human beings, treating African empires and kingdoms as if they were any other. All these stupid loaded words like primitive, backward, tribal, and other such nonsense needs to stop, especially by our own people.

I confirm the veracity of this historical event. The nobles of the Kaabu Kingdom in the Senegambia basin, with the major part of that former empire located in current Guinea Bissau, from the houses of SANNEH/ SANE and MANNEH/ MANÉ were respectfully called NYANCHOS, warring nobles, were descendants of king Touramakhan Traore of Mali, the most famous general from the Traore/Trawalleh clan who aided the emperor Sundjata from the Keïta clan to the throne. He conquered the lands in the eastern provinces under Sundjata‘s orderS. He then married into the noble houses of the Baynunka people ( one of the oldest ethnic groups in the Senegambia basin). His offsprings became the rulers of Kaabu. They fought the Portuguese and forbade them to penetrate their lands. They justified their right to the thrones of the thirty two provinces that formed that empire with its capital in Kansala, through their matrilineal bloodline and their Malian royal bloodline. They were almost invincible in the battle field. For them dying in battle was something noble. In fact only around 1890’s more than 400 Years later upon their arrival in the shores of Guinea that the Portuguese where able to penetrate the territory, due to the big war that opposed the combined Fulani armies of Fouta Djalon, in current Guinea Conakry, and those of Futa Toro in todays Senegal against those of the Kaabu Empire in 1865. ( unfortunately Wikipedia has as an erroneous version of about the reasons why that empire fell. But it wasn’t mainly because of internal revolts or about servants that rebelled against their rulers. It was more about one emperor of Kaabu who prophesied that he would be the last ruler of that empire and also about a Kelemansa, general, from the KORING class, lower noble and warriors, who was the shield of the empire. The oracles from the three major deities of Kaabu had prophesied that the empire will fall if Berkolon the capital of the province of Sankorla ruled by the mighty Sonkho clan should fall to the enemy. Nghalen Sonkho was the ruler of Sankorla. He was a semi -immortal warrior from the Sonkho clan, famously known as Nghalen Sonkho, from the province of Sankorla, near the Capital Kansala, who was envied even by the princess and other high nobilities of Kaabu. He was a mythical figured. After a dispute with a group of princes from Kaabu sent by the emperor Djanken Waaly from the Sane/Sanneh clan , whom he could have killed if he had wished, he fatally consented to his own death after removing the fetiches he had hidden in his braids, after it was clear to him that they couldn’t chop his head off after several attempts. Claiming they were given orders to kill him, a misinformation. After that tragic incident Some lower nobles, mostly from the Koring class, refused to join the battle against the fulani invasion because they were unhappy with the death of the great Kelemansa through intrigues of the rulers from the two Ruling houses, Sane/Sanneh and Mané/ Manneh. When in fact the emperor had never given such an order to kill him nor arrest him. The second weakness of the empire was due to the rebellion of the Fulanis of Kaabu, who were constantly abused and used as servants by the Mandinkas of Kaabu, who joined their Fulani brethren from the two invading Fulani kingdoms. It’s the history of my family. I am from the MANÉ aka MANNEH clan. If today that empire would be reinstalled my father would be the ruler, because of his royal maternal bloodline from the Sane/ Sanneh clan and his royal paternal Mané/ Manneh bloodline. Sorry for such a lengthy Story.

I'm Kenyan Luhya and l was shocked when my own DNA matched several pre-slavery burial sites in Spain and Portugal as old as 1400 Or 1390. Upon research l find out Lwk, Yoruba, Gambia, Mandigo were a big thing in ancient Spain and Portugal but no one is teaching. Geneticist have tried to come up with theories such as ancient slaves from ottoman but the ornaments,worn by the dead shows they were not descedants of slaves. Also some Afro Caribbean DNA is present in multiple burial sites in Spain and Portugal.

My first time hearing about the Moors were the Long Ships with Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier. When I saw El Mansuh played brilliantly by the incomparable Sidney Poitier, a Moorish king obsessed with the Mother of Voices a legendary golden bell 🔔 tall as 3 tall men. I asked my mother who is he supposed to be? She retorted a Moor. What is a Moor? I inquired. My mother explained the Moors were a Arab/African culture that conquered Spain in the 8th century, ruling the whole of the Iberian Peninsula for 700 years.
@brixcosmo
@brixcosmo Жыл бұрын
The Moors were the Ummayad Caliphate, Almoravids and Almohads. That conquered and occupied the Iberian Peninsula for 700 years. Although part of those were already being faught by both Portuguese Kingdom (since 1143) and Spanish Kingdom. Portuguese defeated them in 1415. Spanish defeated them in 1492 'cause Spain territories are larger and Granada in Spain was their Capital. See the Palace/Fortress of Alhambra, Granada, Spain. That's why Portuguese started to sail first, around 1419, to reach India around Africa to Trade Spices.

I was so touched to see the shelves of manuscripts saved from Timbuktu! I have read about the fearsome lengths, under such duress of time, that so many went to to secrete them on their persons and in their vehicles, to save as many as possible from the marauders who would destroy those precious volumes. Such a sad story, but so heartening to see some of them saved. At least for now.🙏

Yes, Tristao did not survive his first encounter with West Africans, I think it was Zurara who, a few years after Tristao's ill-fated voyage, ventured southward to the vicinity of what the Portuguese called ElMina, on the shores of today Ghana. Some inhabitants of this part of West Africa, also, made it clear to Zurara that they were not interested in establishing relationships with him. The sad thing was that African leaders, and populations, at some point gave in, and started participating in the slave trade. This happened in the Upper region as well, with the Muslim conquerors. Threatened by the Serakhulli, and the Tukolors, their black neighbors who converted early to Islam, the Mande reacted first through Sumahoro Kante, the legendary Mande blacksmith. He was forced to yield to Sunjata Keita who then protected the Mande, but then the latter became a threat to their neighbors to the West and South of that upper sub-region of West Africa as they engaged in raids to capture and sell them. El Mina and this lower part of West Africa also, at some point did the same. Thank you for your work.

Gomes Eanes de Zurara (c. 1410 - c. 1474), sometimes spelled Eannes or Azurara, was a Portuguese chronicler of the European Age of Discovery, the most notable after Fernão Lopes. The Portuguese Kingdom got to Ghana in 1470 and allied with the local tribes to trade Gold to Europe. The Castelo de S. Jorge da Mina (Elmina Castle) was built in 1482, again with the authorization of local tribes after hard negotiations yes. It was built has a Trade Port. What became dungeons were originally warehouses to stock Gold, Ivory and Weapons. Portuguese traded Portuguese Weapons for African Gold and Ivory. That Castle was Portuguese for something like 150 years. Then Dutch conquered it and hold it for 250 years. Then it was British for something like 85 years. By 1483 Portuguese got to Congo and allied with the Kingdom of Kongo. In 1498 reached India and built several trade ports/forts. In 1500 to Brasil, in 1510 to Mallaca (Malasya), in 1517 to China were they made a Trading Alliance with the Ming Dinasty, in 1543 to Japan where another Trading Alliance was made. Portuguese built the Port of Nagazaki and years after supplied Weapons to Japan for their Invasion of Korea in 1592-1597. In all this part of history existed conflicts, alliances and also slavery. And all were a part of that. From Tribes i Ghana, to Kingdom of Kongo to even Japanese that traded Japanese Slaves (mostly concubines) for Portuguese Weapons. Those were taken to Macau (China) that was a Portuguese State till 20th Century. As was Goa (India). No one's proud of that in Portugal but at the same time is part of our history. And our history is 880yo (since 1143). A lot of Portuguese were born and raised in all Ex-Portuguese colonies (Macau (China), Goa (India), Mozambique, Angola, Guiné-Bissau, Cabo Verde, São Tomé e Príncipe and Brasil) and Millions of Portuguese still live and work in those Countries and vice-versa. The great majority learnt to see eachothers like brothers. Although that's a process. For my generation (1980) there was no racism nor skin colors. Not even for my Parents Generation (70yo). We were all educated under a premiss/law that states "Todos diferentes, todos iguais" ("All Different, All Equal"). We do not have races in our IDs nor do we refer to people like Black, White or Asian. There's no Afro-Portuguese or Asian-Portuguese to us. We're just all Portuguese. A lot of my friends since my youth have ancestors from Macau, Goa, Mozambique, Angola, Guiné-Bissau, Cabo Verde, São Tomé and Brasil that migrated in the 60', 70's, 80's. Others were born in those Countries and migrated to Portugal later. The greatest richness that our past brought us was the diversity of People and Cultures that make our Multiethnic and Multicultural Society. They did called them blackamoors. However, Without history got it wrong here. Moor means black. Yes Arabs were there from the beginning with blacks. Blacks were Muslims long before the invasion of Spain. They were not called moors, nor did they call themselves moors before they invaded Spain. They were called moslems. The blacks were the ones that went the majority into southern Spain, Portugal and Sicily. Hence the term moors. pale Arabs came in numbers After the moors established their stronghold. Then there were mixed people from the blacks and paler Arabs. The original Arabs were mainly southern Arabians aka horners, and somalians, Ethiopians that lived thousands of years before. The mixed were knowned as tawny moors. Then they started calling everyone who was moslem Moors. And finally as more paler mores entered southern Europe, the english distinguished between by then calling them blackamoors. Meaning black, black. Which made sense only when you considered that they started calling every one who was moslem Moors. But originally moors were meant as the black people. Why are most moorish statues black? Flags black people? Paintings black people? Even in today's beer logos in Spain, black people? Finally why was Othello the moor a black man? Why are there christian moors? Like I said, moors were not meant to be moslems at the beginning.

Great video. The only criticism I would have is the speaking down on Sunni Ali Ber. The Arabic historian and scholars that wrote the history of West African empires were extremely biased towards those who were Muslim vs those who were traditional African spiritual practitioners. This is one of the reasons so little information is found on Wagadu or Ghana which lasted longer than Mali or Songhai. Also Askia loosely translates into usurper if I am not mistaken. One of the reasons Songhai became vulnerable for invasion and defeat in 1591 via the Portuguese, Spanish and Moroccans was it's political instability in successors. Brothers were killing brothers, sons killing fathers and fathers killing sons and nephews for a chance at ruling.

Prince Henry the Navigator never sailed or boarded a ship all his life. How then did he become a navigator ? As Caucasians love to discover lands,though they always meet indigenous inhabitants wherever they claim to have discovered,so also was Prince Henry called a Navigator,not because he was even a deckhand or ever sailed in his entire life,but because as a Prince of the Portuguese Monarchy, he sponsored numerous marine adventures to seek and capture slaves,and to plant the Portuguese flag wherever the sailors/pirates set their foot. For sponsoring marine piracy,slave capturing and the seizure of indigenous lands by the Portuguese Monarchy,he was named Navigator !

@@renaissancewoman100 For the vast majority of the human population he did just that (after the Vikings, of course). No one in the Far East, the Middle East, or Africa, had a clue that an entire hemisphere existed between Asia and Europe.If a few individuals had known this, unlike Columbus and The Spaniards, they failed to realize it and make it known to the rest of the world. Likewise, the Aztecs, Incas, etc., had no idea the rest of humanity and those continents existed at all. We all live in Whitekanda...no one lives in the other..

@@jollyscholar888 For the "vast majority" he did nothing of the sort. 1. Do you believe the Lateen was passed directly from the Romans to the Portuguese? Comedy. 2. If Arabs didnt know of the New World, why did Columbus mention a mosque in today's Cuba? "Whitekanda" lol

@@vernonrobinson1685 There was no mosque in Cuba. He used a term that described a kind of architecture that resembled something like a mosque. What next, he heard the Call t prayer too? And yes, the Lateen sails were used by many European sailors all through their history. The Portuguese Caravel took many ideas an improved on them all. the Caravel was created by the Portuguese.

@@RAs-9966 lol It's called the Ummayad Caliphate (Arabs) occupation of Iberian Peninsula (Al-Andalus). Yes there were Almoravids and Almohads involved but those were also a mix of Berbers from Maghreb (North Africa) and Arabs. Not People from Mali, Senegal, Ghana, Congo, etc. Moors were Arabs. And a lot of Portuguese and Spanish have Moorish Ancestry. Meaning Arab/Persian/Syrian/Amazigh ancestry not really Black African Ancestry. Moors as in Mouros (Portuguese), Morenos (Spanish), Mauri, Maure, Mauro.
