I'm sure it's scripted, and it's a brilliant detail. He does a giggle to get a reaction over the absurdity of the situation, and at least Christine responds. Them mirroring him adds to his already immense authority.

+eddie lasowsky It's a bit rich to label Gervais as 'a horribly overrated hack. He did after all win awards for his excellent Office series and then went onto further success with Extras, plus film roles and standup comedy success on both sides of the Atlantic. Much as I love all the characters in The Day Today, especially Coogan, the scenarios featured in these clips are more to do with light-hearted and zany gags for the sake of laughter only, whereas Gervais and Merchant's Office series was a multi level affair often containing black comedy, drama, and an observation of human failings including racism, sexism and egotism etc.

Dunno about it being a blatant rip off, but it may have helped to inspire him. Personally, I always thought it was more like Partridge: a mocumentary centred around a cringeworthy character with just a sliver of self awareness, who dreams of hitting the showbiz heights. Gervais' work seems to have gone hill since The Office got bigger and bigger in America. Not sure he's as committed to his work as much as he is to chat shows in the States. 'Throw Les Dennis or Karl Pilkington into it..."
@NmpK247 жыл бұрын
So basically Gervais took this Office and a bit of Alan Partridge (he first featured in the Day Today as well) circa '94, mixed it up and got his own take on the Office? Think that's a bit more than just 'inspiring' them.
