I'll never understand why Vegeta was written to always be one step behind Goku after the Saiyan Saga. He whooped Goku, got jumped, then was just stuck in second place for no discernible reason.

It’s stupid. But it was because Toriyama sensei hated Vegeta. He only stayed after Saiyan saga cause fans liked him a lot. That rematch with majin Vegeta and ssj2 Goku was beautiful though. Best fight in the series hands down.

Because of ego. Toryama wanted to teach We must find our own way without ego, not by envying others. And the other reason is Toryama always wanted Piccolo to be the strongest there, not Goku. If you see, the namek fusion is the most powerful of the series.

Vegeta would either go to hell for killing countless innocents or he would become the best supporting character with an annoying, ungrateful, fanbase. Toriyama knew what he was doing by keeping him alive. If he really hated Vegeta, he’d have completely written him out and made up a better saiyan rival for goku to compete with decades ago.
It is very interesting to witness this scene with Japanese audio, score, & English subs vs. English Dub w/ Bruce Falconer score. The tone shift is entirely different. While the Japanese version doesnt seem to suck me in emotionally like the nostalgia of the Falconer Score English Dub, I feel that it is more structured in its story-telling.
