The last time i had a nail in my tire , i was at work so i pulled the nail put some silicone on a big fat screw and screwed it into the nail hole . About a year later the guy at the tire shop asked me if i wanted to keep the screw or try and patch it , i said nah just leave .

Pull out the nail and pop a plug in it, tire stores wont install them in California but you can buy the kit for about 7 bucks at auto zone etc...Just do it near an air source so you ca get the psi back up....

I wouldn't want to "rip" in it as you put it. But in a lot of states that is an acceptable repair. In California they want it patched from the inside. I have a C7 with run flats, but that's only good for 50 miles on a car that is already pretty low. I keep a kit in mine just in case (they don't come with a spare)...In the little cargo compartment I keep my jump pack, mini compressor, and float charger in...It beats walking or trying to find a tow truck driver who is actually equipped to handle specialty vehicles....
