A fantastic idea. And wow what looks the Trollstigen fantastic with the autumn colours. Last time that I was there in 2022 there was an event for walking uphill, but you could also drive by car there at that moment. But I think when you put an sign (with a time schedule) at the top and at the bottom you would have even less people that will drive there at that moment.

I think there is a gradual movement towards the closure of certain roads for motorized traffic happening in Norway. Stalheimskleiva is a prime example. More will probably follow in years to come. But Trollstigen is just too important for tourism and also an important route for getting from A to B. So I dont think a road like that will be permanently closed for motorized vehicles. But if they could refuse access to busses and long caravans, that would already improve things massively!

Many in the comment section who forget that for many this is a road that is used daily by those who live and work in the district around Åndalsnes and Valldal. Remember that not everyone in Norway is a tourist.
@daghylin11 ай бұрын
Of course, the road was made, not for tourists, but to accommodate the needs of the local population. That makes the road all the more impressive. So the goal then must be to utilize the uniqueness of this road to combine tourism and local needs. And I would suggest that cycling tourists are less of a menace than all sorts of motorized visitors?
@Snurre9911 ай бұрын
My point is that you can't just close the road, it is used for public transport, among other things. There are regular buses that go over there many times every day. A few hours might have been approved, but not a whole day in the summer.@@daghylin
@Snurre9911 ай бұрын
and you wrote this: menace than all sorts of motorized visitors? I drive the road often all season, there is no menace from any road users as I see it. The road is important for the locals, and at the same time Norway's most visited tourist road. It will not be easy to close the Trollstigen during the summer season.@@daghylin
@paulsteenhauer797410 ай бұрын
You contradict yourself by saying “remember not everyone in Norway is a tourist” referring to locals using the road then going on to say “it’s Norway most visited tourist road” . The guys went up there in September which is outside of main tourist season anyway. And trollstigen is closed all this week , I am sure the locals have a back up plan for this week considering the road will also be closed for the upcoming 6 months of winter.
@Snurre9910 ай бұрын
So a mountain pass can't be important to the local population and at the same time be a tourist attraction? The whole of Norway is a tourist attraction for large parts of the year, which we locals have adapted to. Then a group of cyclists arrives and expects them to have the Trollstigen to themselves for 24 hours, it's ridiculous. The locals have no other backup solution than to drive around the mountain, which takes 3-4 hours. But of course we who live here will close the mountain pass so that a group of cyclists can make their wet dream come true. Find another mountain you can cycle in and around, there are plenty of such mountains in Norway, suggests Lysebotn, which is longer, has more turns and is safer. If you knew how dangerous Trollstigen is in terms of rockslides, you wouldn't have cycled across the mountain in a tricot and plastic helmet, trust me@@paulsteenhauer7974

I cycled Trollstigen many years ago. Well, mostly pushed the bike up all 11Km... In my defence, I had nearly 20Kg of luggage strapped onto it... The descent into Valldal was 'a bit faster' and much more enjoyable. ;-) After Valldal(camped there overnight) I set course for Sjøholt and over the Ørskogfjellet, down to Vestnes and ferry back to Molde. Using the tramline to get up on NesAksla is cheating. There's a perfectly good footpath up there...
