@@weneedcriticalthinking Yes. You know to really enjoy it fully requires some background knowledge, especially of Romero, to whom the movie overtly pays homage, but also Hitchcock and a plethora of other directors, films and tropes. It makes me sad when I see someone who has missed ALL of that!

I’ll be honest, I only watched this film because I’m a huge fan of Adam Driver who is a phenomenal actor in my honest opinion. However, this film was as if someone had all the ingredients to make a perfect Spaghetti Bolognese. Except they threw out all of the main ingredients and got lazy. Instead they ground some beef for 20 minutes, cooked the noodles and drained them. Then popped open a can of Delmonte spaghetti sauce and dumped it into the pot of noodles along with the ground beef and served it cold. That’s what this movie was like to me. It had so much potential to be a great film. The best we’ll ever get out of this is a few half decent anthology like fanfics.

I went into this movie expecting to like it, but it's absolutely terrible. Literally didn't laugh a single time. It was trying to ironically be dry humor, but it was just boring and excessively off beat. Not even a candidate to become a secret cult classic. And the ending is just random and lackluster and empty. Just a completely boring movie through and through. I mean you've heard of B movies....but this is an F movie. Forget about saving your money. It's not even worth the time spent watching it, seriously. Watching paint dry is more entertaining than this movie. The only reason I can think of is Murray hates the industry and is mocking it in a way that only makes him look stupid, or made a bet with someone that he could make a terrible movie and get people to watch it. It seems like this movie was made specifically for us to hate it. It's like he thought "Everything else has been done....so instead of making a movie that sucks soo bad it's funny....I'm going to make a movie that sucks soo bad that it just plain sucks!". Like I'd honestly believe he made this movie just because he hates whoever funded it, and wanted to waste their money out of spite. I mean seriously Bill Murray, if you're reading this, you seem like you're done with life.....so can you leave all of your money to me? It seems like the irony of just giving your money to a random stranger asking for it after bashing your terrible film would appeal to you.

The consumerism plot wasn't even already done - it was already done WELL. This movie was so hamfisted in it's delivery of the message, that it came off as if it were trying to say that consumerism is awesome. The biggest a-hole in the movie wasn't the MAGA (or MAWA) hat wearing conservative, it was the judgmental "one with nature" hermit who simply sat back and watched the world burn. If that was the message of the movie, it would have been genius, but I really think the filmmakers were going for the "we should all be hermits and be one with nature" message instead.

The whole idea of zombies in a mall already said everything that Jarmusch was straining to say in his film . "They're attracted to things they liked when they were alive."...Yeah, I heard that line in 1978. Holy shit this film is an embarrassment .

It there’s nothing wrong with internet , social media , KZbin etc; these are actually all fantastic things ....it’s the people that are fucked up . And by that I mean , back in the 80s/90s I still recall the message of those decades : that tv is dumbing is down . Well look at KZbin . When I browse and see what’s getting millions of views while the bright intriguing and intelligent stuff is marginalised I think it’s a sure sign western civilisation is commiting cultural suicide . And that is because westerners are moving more and more towards nihilism and cynicism . We hate capitalism and so the liberal entertainment industry tries to make us feel guilty for taking any joy in it whatsoever and blame everything on the goods mankind produces . go back to living like the hermit and create nothing new by killing our creativity !? 🙄 or be a bunch of hypocrites and hope the technologically advanced aliens will save us !? ( wonder if they deindustrialised !!?? Wonder if they went into a panic over over automation 😂) but again , films like this are a perfect reflection of the cultural suicide and self hatred going on advanced since the 60s

I was on board for the first 1/3 of the movie, but the third time the theme song started playing (out of 4, maybe 5 I did not stay for the end credits but it wouldn't surprise me) I was really over it and annoyed. I wouldn't mind the slow pace, I kind of loved how closely it was to original Romero zombie films, at FIRST, but even those movies were more interesting. The last half of the movie was awful. Just awful.

I went in blind with this, i heard it was a zombie comedy with Bill Murray and Adam Driver in it. It's one of the worst i've seen in recent years. My feelings were exactly the same as yours. We've seen this scenario million times before done better with Dawn of the dead., Day of the dead, Return of the living dead, and especially with Shaun of the dead The movie keeps making sure that the viewer knows it's being self-aware, it's ALMOST kind of adorable how clever the movie thinks it is. It feels like a movie made out of sheer lazyness and paycheck, rather than for any true passion. Waste of time and money and not to mention, waste of that amazing cast.

Thanks for giving your honest opinion. I won't lie I actually love this movie while also admitting it doesn't quite work as a whole. I guess the reason why I love it is it started to make sense to be in the last 10 minutes. In the ending, the movie throws every story trick out the window and completely demolishes the fourth wall. From there on in, they just do whatever they want cause this is what the movie is about. This is a movie where the stuff that is heavy handed and in your face is not only intentional but its not really suppose to be taken seriously. This is a total silly and self-aware Jarmusch style b-movie that mocks Jarmusch himself, the work the cast has done, the zombie fandom, and it mocks shlocky b-movies where messages are extremely heavy handed and the dialogue is really stupid. In the end, there was this clever underlying wit to it. Its truly a Jarmusch style film. I also love that its a genre film that focuses on a cast of characters instead of just one or two, we don't see that too much. Its like Coffee and Cigarettes meets a self-aware version of Dawn of the Dead. Its obviously not going to be for everyone but I can say I personally loved it. Keep doing what your doing man and keep giving your honest opinions.

This is such a weird movie to critique because coming from someone who is sick of the zombie genre, it was enjoyable to see a zombie spoof that wasn’t a love letter, but more of a Fuck You to the genre. Sure there’s plenty of jokes that are so on the nose and lifeless that it’s impossible to laugh at. But i found it to be amusing enough to enjoy it. I think what this film really suffers from is not having really any clever or wit to it. It could’ve been enhanced with some of that instead of the constant dead pan self referential ironic humor that kinda got played out sometimes. But I totally get why people hate it. I can’t blame anyone who does. For me, there was 3 different laugh out loud moments that really had me rolling. Everything else was a minor chuckle to complete crickets .

Ever seen the film role models !? Remember Ben stillers miserable character that hates everything !? That’s what I imagine the writer director of this movie is like inside . Portrays the majority of the population as dead inside and while they’re might be a hint of truth to that , his “living “ characters such as the hermit and weirdo undertaker are just as miserable and dead as everyone else in my opinion . What’s the actual message he’s trying to convey !? That society should collapse , we all go live in the woods again or hope the technologically advanced aliens come down and rescue us !? Pleeeaase. This film will only be “ deep” for the growing population of cynical nihilists who think themselves as wise prophets themselves with their self fulfilling apocalyptic visions of the future . I hated this movie , but at the same time I think it’s an important movie because it just simply reflects the depressing mental state out there in the culture . What passes as adult entertainment these days is a reflection of it too and so is our leftist /nihilistic “education “ system which is just scaremongering and producing pissed off students who think they are the planets last hope.

Ok Amigo that's what you interpreted from this movie, here is what I saw. This movie is about apathy and hopelessness , no character is in control of their own destiny, both the living and the dead's future lay in the hands of the author. The world is completely messed up to the extent that everyone is unsurprised and jaded by events, they saw Trump win, Brexit happen now a Zombie holocaust whatever. In order to attain some form of control the living/dead distract themselves with materialism Coffee/Sport/Cell's it won't change the final outcome but it soothes their journey. This movie is a brilliant contemporary critique of the world in 2019, environmental apocalypse beckons in the hands of our corporate overlords and we, overwhelmed and daunted by this task distract ourselves with nonsense as we are powerless to affect things. I think this film is a 10 out of 10 but it will take years to find it's audience the cast and crew were fantastic, special mention for Bill who nailed it.

Also, I totally get Strangeloves point, its more of a satirical, subtle piece on the current state of affairs. . .I thought that point was well-made and pretty obvious. Jarmusch isnt an overtly sensationalist director, that isnt his style, anyone who doesnt know that would likely miss the point of this film and overlook its subtlety, they'd probably find Tarkovsky boring or uneventful too, that doesnt make his films bad. finally...dont ever use the words Trump, Brexit and greatness in the same sentence. . . .thems the rules

Here's my take: I got everything the movie was trying tell us and even agree with most of the messages, but I thought it sucked because it felt the need to punch the viewer in the face over and over and over again with unfunny reincorporation and half jokes that felt like the director talking over us with a conceited attitude, all while flexing just how he's built up so much influence so quickly and has all these cool friends in Hollywood. Cool, you have all these famous actors in your movie. What's that? The farmer's an asshole? Fracking is bad? This is going to end badly? We're being way too complacent about all this? Thanks for telling me for the millionth fucking time. Oh, Sturgill Simpson? How fucking great! It sounds like a decent country song, but I think I've heard enough of it, now. Maybe reference other bands popular with the age group this movie is marketed towards? Especially in the Hippie beheading scene. That could've been hilarious! No, Strugill Simpson? Okay. Wait, what happened to the kids? Why couldn't that alien have done more? Wasn't that a bit of a wasted opportunity? There's a fine line between satire and try-hard. This movie didn't cross the line, it made a quantum leap and wound up a few light years beyond the line. I've never seen any of the director's works before, and I get that this is basically his style, but holy shit, was this movie obnoxious. Not only did this movie throw any and all subtlety out the window, some of the details felt incredibly messy. Maybe the director's other movies are better, I'd certainly hope so, because this was a mess.
