I'll never forget what my dad told me 30 years ago...the BEST salesman NEVER takes no for an answer. Now guess who the best salesmen are? The internet. It doesn't take breaks or naps and it's not even a human, and it's designed to know how to appeal to the buyer. It's an entity that's designed to manipulate, and deceive until it gets a YES for an answer... unrelentingly. Humans have been catagorized and lined up like cattle and played like fools, and I saw it coming to the internet from a mile away 25 years ago. Since the beginning of time, if it's entertaining (newspapers, radio, magazines, TV, etc) they WILL find a way to get you! And the smarter and more immersive that our access to the internet gets (phones, computers), the dumber and more docile we get...a great example is the movie WALL-E...look at what happens to those generations of people on the ship. The movie Ready Player 1 is the ultimate example as well.

There's been an explosion in talk about AI recently. If corporations and governments are secretly years ahead of what the public knows about it makes you wonder what is coming down the pipelines. 2 minutes in and I'm like "Oh, duh. Didn't realize this was up for debate." Circa 2000-2001 I was in college doing a dual degree program in radio and tv production. Our college radio station used RealPlayer to stream over the web, which was something outlandishly new. I remember talking to another student and saying that this was the future. That one day, ALL media would be streamed, and that it would be on-demand instead of live... and that since ratings and viewership info would be perfect instead of guesses like the Nielsen system, they'd be able to target ads to you and suggest shows and movies you would have otherwise never heard of... and I remember naively thinking "It'll be AMAZING!!! Imagine watching something and ALL the commercials are for things you love... and you'd get to hear about bands, games, anime... all of which are things you'd actually like!" Sadly, it doesn't really work that way. Ads are still garbage... and it seems harder than ever to find things I'm looking for on any search engine.
@Rafalgahr

Search engines have become glorified shopping windows and the AI system means even more echo chambers and even more weirdly referenced keywords that are then turned into a funnel to trick you. I feel also pirate or dubious warez and ebooks sites have been popping up, the current internet is mostly a hellhole of bot-generated drivel (and I include the "suggestions" from algorithms that try to shove crappy streamers and 'controversy posts" down our throats)...

I don't think we as a society could exist without some kind of division.

My ex husband who used linux laughed finding it funny and I have to admit it kind of was like snail mail but I wonder if he would ever have the thought now of how his wife looked in to things that became so popular such as a post it board that became Facebook. He use to ask me about html coding which looking back I find strange considering he was using Linux and writing coding. Like how can one write coding without knowing html? How can you write coding without knowing coding? I knew how I did it. I told him I just use a html generator and showed him. The internet was so fun back then. Where it actually was teaching us much better then now. It made a new uneducated user like me feel like they could do things with website building, PowerPoint, etc... People learned how to reformat their computers, remove viruses without an antivirus as the antivirus software could not update fast enough. Now I cannot even get a smart phone to be smart. I started reading the html coding in the phone trying to see what was going on behind the scenes.

I was on the web before there were browsers. I have noticed - I mean it’s blatantly obvious that you can’t just poke around and find interesting people who have personal and engaging content. In 1996, one day, I talked to a woman wintering over in Antarctica’s MacMurdo station, I joined a “discussion “ with Koko the gorilla who communicates with sign language. Later, I chatted with a monk who needed Llinux support but he was on a vow of silence and I still feel guilty that I didn’t go out of my way to help him. I used to be in a group for people with ptsd. Some of the participants were only there because they could remove header info and not be found again by other users. I’m not sure how it became the sleek, vapid thing it is now. I have called it the wikification of the internet. Information is pre packaged, like a wiki article. I’m not dissing Wikipedia, which is useful for many people. I was one of the guys who set up early internet service providers. When you got your block of ip addresses, you had to agree not to use the internet for commercial purposes. Service providers themselves, were a grey area, as far as that goes. I had a feeling I was not doing the world a favor. More users meant a bigger market that corporations couldn't keep their claws off forever. If you aren't old now, you have no idea what the internet used to be like. It was ugly and slow and totally fucking amazing.

Myspace was the start of the plauge.. Us early 90s babies need to understand we fell trap into that in the mid 2000s. We should have seen it coming with all the same recycled meme's and drama throughout Myspace... I knew we were bamboozled when I started to see my friends little siblings creating awkward profiles.. We were apart of the problem.. Saying you miss that is like saying you miss the 50s-60s... Lol... AOL was full of drama as well.. I lost track of how many times a fight would start through away messages.. Chat rooms often lead to a lot of drama so let's not kid ourselves. 7 hrs of a school day and by 8pm you are in a chat with the same people?? Boy those times where stressful even as a bystander.. It also opened up a door for rival schools 10-30 mins away to talk shit... Sorry but you lived a lie back then, you just miss being a kid and carefree.

I came back to this video and this is too eerie, man. This video is more relevant than ever, not just the video, but the whole DIT series. This is seriously sinister with all the recent AI craze. You definitely should revisit this series. The inversion of humans vs bots happened ages ago. On twitter now, almost 80% of the traffic is AI/bot-generated. The talking points of this theory are all too real, it's just uncomfortable and unsettling because of how real they are. This is too prophetic. Dare you to say anything "not-approved" by someone else, and you risk getting doxxed, hacked, swatted, mass-reported to have your accounts taken down, banned, whatever they do all the time. This actually happened to some people I know, needless to say, they got into serious trouble with some weird people that did all what I said previously. It actually happened to a ton of people. In most cases it was the act of other users with some extended hacking skills, others were seemingly done by bots via unknown methods. It's not just "uncool" to state anything unpopular, it's also a threat to someone's life.

It's definitely not where these ideas originated, but it is how "social justice" ideology proliferated so unbelievably quickly. It's all algorithms. People click on things that make them angry or excited. People click on certain buzzwords, "racism" "police brutality," "bigotry" "hemophilia," "fascist." We could get more clicks and more traffic if we combine them! "Black man killed by racist, sexist, homophpbic, fascist police brutality!" It's a weak example, but it's all true. They're not the sole perpetrators, but Intersectionality got popularized in large part by internet algorithms and SEO writers to generate more clicks. If society feels like it's at a fever pitch, one of the important reasons is because artificial intelligence is basically manipulating is into tribalistic self-destruction.

Technically, it counts as a theory in the scientific sense of the term: an explanation that covers the source of observations or how the observations came to be. The theory for how the Internet is largely driven by algorithms or bots acts as an explanation for the observations regarding how the Internet seems "off" or "empty." The term "theory" only means "guess" colloquially. It's honestly one of the more annoying discrepancies between the actual technical use of a term and how that term is casually used.

One of the things that creep me out the most, is when I watch a movie on a website I am subscribed to (not Netflix etc. ), and following that the internet suggests me stuff reflected in the movie's theme. On the other hand, you could just be the next level super-bot. Controlled opposition. The mellow, likeable voice, the smooth presentation, critical thinking, trendy, mysterious, somewhat nostalgic & wistful, but not too radical or unsettling...Just perfect for generation X, who think themselves clever and reactionary, yet willing to adapt and compromise...? Or...maybe I'm the bot? Who knows anymore. I can’t stand how you’re looked at as being “odd” for not participating in social media. I see my own sister, who is older than me and was right there with me growing up in the era before dial-up was even common in households, fall right into the trap of posting to Facebook and Instagram a life I know she doesn’t live. For example, she just put herself in debt ($5,800) for Christmas to buy her kid a bunch of stuff he doesn’t even really need or want along with booking the family to a big expensive holiday vacation …. just to spend most of the time taking pictures and posting their every moment to social media and posting 4-5 photos just to show how she has X amount of presents under the tree to give off the appearance of a “we have lots of money” fun life all while complaining about the cost of living now. I see her post pictures of herself and I don’t even know who that person is that I see in the photos. Despite being my sister, it’s _not_ my sister. It’s an over-edited filtered mess of a woman that looks nothing like she posts online …. it’s an unreal feeling, and when I see what her social circle posts, it’s the exact same shit. She fell for it - hook, line, and sinker all while sitting at family gatherings mocking the same types of people that do that very thing as if she’s more aware of it. It’s made even family gatherings hard to be around because it’s not just her, it’s 90% of the people there with a smartphone in their face posting to social media. When they’re bored, they have their phone in their face. When talking to a family member, they still have a phone in their face. When something is going on (cutting turkey, opening gifts, etc.) someone has a smartphone and is taking photos just to post to social media. If a topic is brought up and discussed? It’s because someone just saw something on social media. It’s a constant barrage of “look at this, check this out, did you see this?, did you see what X/Y/Z posted?” I end up feeling like the “odd one out” in the family because I sit there thinking “is this even real right now?” because the behaviors are all just so predictable. It’s made going around family - _family_ for crying out loud - a miserable experience because you know they know how they’re being, but act as if it has no affect on them. That they’re “not like that”. I think that’s what’s really sad is that people know. They know how stale everything is and how the internet is nothing but a way to herd minds anymore. Majority are well aware of it, but the majority also like to think “well, I’m not like that, it doesn’t fool me” Sometimes I wish the internet would cease to exist. I use it often and know some of my fondest memories were using dial-up back in 95-99 to post on message boards and chat rooms, having some genuine connections with people, but the way it is anymore …. I’d rather it just disappear. It’s created mindless drones, myself included at times.

But thankfully I found this theory and it all makes sense now, imagine how many more people had this lingering thoughts but can't voice it out due to the lack of "puzzle pieces" as you call it. Im glad I hadn't wasted a lot of my time going along the trend And yes, I feel kinda left out because I only play games and read novels then talk to people who does the same, but it feels way more genuine than going along the trend talking about nonsense stuff, pretending I know them or even care, going along with "people" or argue against them.

As someone who was part of the 90s web design art blog culture I can agree. There was a community of designers and artists who made their own websites even some hosted other artists websites to share their music / art / photography / poetry. I had a semi popular website back in the 90s that interviews pretty well known indie bands I also shared my own art and photography and built my own bands websites. There was websites that just hosted links to other local punk bands websites usually built on angel fire. Back than we could search and find the strangest things and blogs from normal regular people sharing their lives independently on their own hand built website. It’s true now it’s just a few social media sites, which have so many bots Astro turfing, shill bots etc and this fake algorithm us youtubers need to fight to get our videos seen if the content doesn’t fit the mold of what the website wants. The internet is essentially a ghost but at least some of us born in the early 80s or 70s remember how it was. Edit: what you said about losing subs upon every upload no matter what it is seems to be true. I lose 1 -2 subs almost every upload than seem to gain 15-20 over the course of each week and it levels out but never enough to grow. My content is definitely not wanted here and my channel is definitely shadow banned.

Mainly because it’s hilarious and also sad and insane the way people will go after one another’s comments over something that I couldn’t imagine putting energy into or an other reasonable person. It's happening too fast for us to know. Maybe they want to listen to characters talk about their lives, even if they're made up stories and/or are unrealistic. Maybe that's why comic book characters are so popular. Maybe this could help explain the phenomenon of parasocial relationships. People just want to get their minds off of their everyday routines... I think that's why KZbin has taken such a notable shift from the "Broadcast Yourself" to "Broadcast a Fictional Character"

It's like you've been reading my mind as this is exactly how I've been feeling about the internet for a few years now and I find it all rather depressing. It just feels like I'm being told lies everywhere I look and can't really believe anything I'm being told and I find it very annoying, I wish we could go back to reality and get governments out of our lives as that's who I believe is behind all this nonsense.

How can someone be wrong about a movie? Likes and dislikes are a matter of personal taste. It's bizarre we even think in these terms. Good job on the video.

I first got on the internet circa 1996, I'm not bragging, I'm pointing it out to give my comment some validity. The old internet was many things: First it was mostly populated by people at universities, this is because the very first people to gain access to the internet starting in the early 1970s were computer researchers at major universities. The old internet was like strolling downtown, yes the biggest building was a library, but there were little cafes, bars, smoke joints, pubs, etc where you could chat with people about all sorts of things. There was the equivalent of people on the street ranting about some set of beliefs, there were meeting places dedicated to researching all sorts of things, at the beginning a huge topic of research were UFOs and aliens. Forums were very important because it's where people with common interests gathered together to discuss topics and help each other, depending on the topic or set of interests, people would get involved in passionate debates. You could often find an answer to an obscure question in forums, in the vast reaches of the internet there was a person who knew the answer and you could ask them. And, in the beginning there was a huge red light district that came alive once the sunset and sometimes even during the day people would be there. The three largest sections of the internet, in the beginning were "the library", "the red light district", and "the UFO area". Most importantly, many if not most of the people you met on the internet were genuine, or at least they did a good job of appearing genuine. The old internet was the time before bots and the paid troll takeover, also the time before, what appears to be, special ops members of the military that quickly try to respond to any discussion of anything that could be construed as opposing the interests of the powers that be. Things are very different right now..... before, in the old internet, people thought they weren't being watched, we believed it....now we're all being watched all the time AND they let us know and they pass judgement. Everything is recorded all the time, everywhere

Someone's getting old. As a "old person" that grew-up sans-internet, this is nothing new. Technology leads>Business catches up and profits> Laws catch up to control. You eventually learn to ignore or be consumed. Problem is not matter how much you know how things happen, you still need to participate on a certain level.

I found this video to be validating and refreshing. Something that humans have going for us is our flexibility and creativity; we might survive like the flexible willow tree against a rigid AI. Some things I’ve found to be helpful and I wish had been told to me early in life: Be skeptical and question everything, especially authority and the sacred, both inside and outside of you. Real Truths welcomes skeptical questioning and is made stronger by it. Learn to trust the feeling inside when you encounter something True.
