Lyrics like that kind of started with Dylan, but considering that two of the guys were in grunge bands, I'm certain they heard of Pete Droge and "Sunspot Stopwatch". Very similar style lyrically, and both have a haunting melodic line with the lead instruments.

My girls 8, 6, and 11 months love this song and the video. Actually sir, You are right. They are performing this song at a slower rate. Though not much slower than the actual version. I'd put it at .15-.25% slower than the album version. Still magnificent either way!
