My Dad was SgtMaj of Weapons Training Battalion in the late 60s until his retirement 1972 at MCB Quantico, Virginia. His name was CI Arundale a 30 year Marine with an 03 MOS. I had the pleasure as a youngster of meeting Chuck as well as Carlos Hathcock. Dad came home and told me one day Carlos was still such an avid shooter with such a love for the discipline that even after receiving the burns on his body from the attack during his last deployment that he wouldn't stop shooting. The burns on his back were so bad and his back so permanently damaged the scar tissue so extreme his wounds would crack and bleed as he would hold a position to shoot. Both Carlos and Chuck were very humble special men that always downplayed their roles in Vietnam. They personified the ultimate warriors that make them legends as United States Marine Corps Scout Snipers. Semper Fi

It's always an honor to meet those warriors and be able to talk to them. I watched an interview with Hathcock - he didn't seem to downplay it much, but this was shortly before he passed so maybe he didn't give a damn. There are many more we will never hear about who gave with the same intensity and maybe not quite as good, or were unlucky. God bless them all.

Perhaps someone may have already mentioned the inaccuracy of your comment saying "at a velocity the M40 would not have allowed. The M14 shoots the 7.62x51 cartridge generating velocities in the 2600 to 2700 fps. I know, I've built and own and shot 3 M1A's. And even assuming the M40 was chambered in the same cartridge it would have produced a bit better velocities due to the 2" longer barrel and the M40 being a bolt rifle as opposed to a gas operated rifle. Now if the M40 was chambered in the 300 Win mag cartridge there would be no comparison. The only thing the M14 offered over the M40 was being able to put more rounds downrange in a given time. Sorry for being such a stickler for detail and accurate narration.

was a sniper RVN '65/66, USMC but not by design, MOS 0211, air, ground photo reconnaissance, only weapon a .45 and .38 revolver, the shooter or sniper 'SF, assigned to our LRRP, was killed two days before our patrol, his weapon was a Remington m/700 w/ Redfield 3-9x variable, off of the early USMC M/40. 7.62x39 I had only 3 days to adjust to my new position, had no idea what I was adjusting for, anyway it never happened, the mission got handed to Australian SAS. I went back to phonographic reconnaissance, but I kept the rifle, still have it to this day. I never knew any or covered any of the Marine snipers in Vietnam, the photos I took of NVA movements along with gorilla movements throughout S. Vietnam should have been enough proof for the US to get the hell out of Vietnam, so it goes what we all now know, was a mistake.

I was not there but I doubt they were head shots. When I went through Marine scout/sniper school in '74 we were taught to shoot center of mass, a triangle of nipples and belly button. Head shots are for movies. I used an M-14, actually nomenclature was an M-21. An M-14 with a heavy barrel and a scope. I met Hathcock in '74 or '75 while I was an instructor at the FBI academy at Quantico. Very quite spoken guy who you wanted to hear every word he said.

Just to add to your last sentence, a good friend of mine attended a "meet and greet / speech" with Carlos Hathcock in Houston some time in the late 1980s. My friend said that after Carlos finished his presentation, the room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. He said Carlos was very humble and did not dramatize his recollections. At the end of his talk, no one asked any questions. The audience was awestruck.

103 confirmed kills really isn’t something to be proud of, that is 103 lives he took away from people who MIGHT NOT have been combatants, it’s one thing to kill someone that you know is definitely going to attempt or is attempting to kill you, but not everyone is always going to be a combatant. Being a sniper is just another way that humans have found to kill each other and are a valuable asset during war but to record the number of kills is just sick 🤢, there is no moral justification for it, you might as well have asked the crews of Enola Gay and BockScar how many kills they had or any other bomber crews, it is just not done. 🤬👎.

Agreed, it is more than time that the Marines give the nod to Chuck. Chuck never sought publicity, was a 3 year enlistment competing with Hathcock a career Marine. When he went on R&R unknowns messed with his rifle, he never complained. He was discovered in another sniper's book. For what it's worth, neither Hathcock nor Mahwinney had the most kills, an Army sniper holds that distinction.

I appreciate the augmentation of film to tell the story, but using film of US Army members to illustrate various points in the story is rather off putting to say the least. No Marine would consent to his actions being portrayed by anyone other than a Marine. You may contest my statement, but ask any Marine if this is not so. As a Marine it clearly is a distraction from the telling of this story.
