In the Divine Comedy, Dante goes down the circles of Hell meeting the world’s most illustrious sinners. 700 years after his death, this series explores the contemporary meaning of the seven cardinal sins.
In this episode we explore envy in the age of social media. At a time when we are constantly surrounded by everyone else's seemingly perfect lives, are we becoming more envious than ever before? If so, could we actually be using this envy to our advantage?

Thing is, social media is not “social” 90% of the time. We just consume content, but when there is some interaction with people close to us. It can be really fulfilling

I'm avoiding social media like a plague because I admit I'm always envious of my friends. But the irony is even without social media, I'm still exposed to all sorts of displays that made me feel envious. So there really no escape to it but to just embrace the feeling and do self-reflections.

As much as I appreciate the conclusions on how to tame and utilise envy in a more distilled and day to day manner. In the social media context it is completely out of control and manipulating our fundamental brain function and gaming these systems. These systems are specifically designed to incite and manipulate people. Social media envy is like saying the human body needs sugar so drinking soda can be useful.

Great comment and what KZbin has done to itself is cringeworthy! Communist social media. Twisted.

I probably agree 50% on this. They should include people who’s not using social media and how they manage their lives. Are they still goal oriented? How would they view themselves to others, etc.

I'm 34 and have been a part time carer for my mother since I was a teen. Since lockdown it has now hit me that I missed out on having fun in life that other people online seem to have. I've never felt jealous before but now I do mixed with sadness because of my low financial status compared to those who go on holiday to Dubai etc.. I don't know if a social media break will help at all

Well I think magazine were the forerunners to all this. They have and still do feature only glamour and perfect looking people that they have been airbrushing for decades. Even going back to the time portraits were only painted, even then painters were commissioned to paint the model beautiful/perfect and not realistic. Social media is only the modern version.

That is why I stick to KZbin for news and documentaries ONLY. I am not on social media. I find everything else out there (on other social media platforms), boring and a waste of time. Who has time to look at another's lunch or snack.

what is success? is it some thing that makes me happy? or, is it something that makes me acceptable by people i don't even care? does it make my food taste better? is my life about painting a false image about my self? can my success make me free from any and every morbidity i am destined to?? if not why worry so much after i just make sure of my just bread and just butter?

so, this story has two assumptions: 1. Social Media is normal mandatory part of our lives. There is nothing wrong with that. 2. We are *capable* of dealing with emotions on such scale - social media has been around for 10 years. While we were evolving for last at least one million. Never ever in that time we had to deal with more than few 10s to at most couple of 100s of people. Now, we potentially exposed to thousands on daily basis. Even if every picture they take were the first picture and completely honest, we are assuming evolution has prepared us for that kind of volume of emotions. Nope. It hasn't.

@ Neel Roy Social media makes a perversity of what are normal emotions. Behind closed doors can people reach superstar status. The media itself controls the sway and tittalates, or not, self pride - achievement or the downplay. It perverts the norm.

@@LIZZIE-lizzie well put. I usually get more sad when I find explanation stays superficial not because of lack of information but maybe effort which is what this video did.

Everything is very true here. It depends on how "envy" is used. Its keeping eyes open on the right perspective, and accepting that view the correct way.

Envy can NEVER be good for anyone! Be happy with who you are, and what you’ve got! I think envy has its basis in being worried about what other people think of us! We have the desire to look successful, even if we are not, the desire to look prosperous, even when we are not, and look beautiful or handsome to the ridiculous extent that we spend money to change how we look! Ironically, we then lose our money, prosperity and become UNSUCCESSFUL! God says “Do not covet (desire, want) your neighbours ox, wife” etc., etc. Banks encourage this (or did) I remember in the 80’s going to the bank and seeing a big poster of an expensive car on a mountainous road, on a hairpin bend, and the poster said “why wait? Have that holiday, or car now”. 😳 The expression “Keeping up with the Jones’s” springs to mind! 🙏🙏🙏

I think the 'benign' envy you talk about is really just competition, FOMO, and the human tendency to monitor each other to see if they're measuring up. It doesn't sound healthy to me.
