For the 34th in my "Death Of A Fluorescent" series I've got a F2T12 to finish off.
This one gave a good show, and it just kept going & going...
It ran it on multiple short sessions (anywhere from 1 to 15+ minutes), since it would
flicker/snake-of-lightning/orange-end-glow/etc, then stabilize. Letting it cool a bit
would make it 'active' again.
Even from that, allot of video was cut out using just the best parts, (and needing to
keep it under the 15-minute limit.) Had everything been used, it would have made for
well over a hour's worth of boring video.
And yes it was dimming the 2nd bulb on the ballast.
Ballast used is a Osram 2xF32T8 instant start electronic.
0:00 Part 01 (orange glow in failed end)
1:04 Part 02 (more orange glow)
2:04 Part 03 (2nd end filament starts to fail)
3:50 Part 04 (blinking orange in 2nd end)
7:49 Part 05 (dimmer blinking orange)
8:45 Part 06 (tube flickering/snakes)
9:31 Part 07 (more flickering)
10:22 Part 08 (flickering/some end glow)
11:13 Part 09 (going dim/snakes/end glow on both)
12:26 Part 10 (going dim/snakes/end glow on both)
13:28 Part 11 (final run.. more going dim & flickering)
14:22 Part 12 (won't come on, vacuum lost after turning off last run)

Wow, I’m surprised that didn’t burn the plastic caps that the bulb slots into, I saw another video where someone had a EOL bulb that went like this and the ends got so hot it melted the bulb sockets

@Imakeelectronicchaos Yep that can happen! Its more likely with the modern sockets that can't take as much heat as the older ones like I used. I also shut this down & let things cool off every so often.

When a fluorescent tube becomes a rectifier diode

Pretty much so on a normal ballast. .lol. But I think these instant-start electronic ballasts don't allow it to rectify, they force AC power through ... they'll even light a tube with both filaments completely broken off their supports (ofcourse it won't last long before it fries)

Thanks. Yeah, its usually just one end. When I had this one where both were ready to go, I had to video it. .lol.

What causes that almost string-like action to happen inside the lamp?

I'm not sure of the the exact reason, but it has something to do with unstable flow of power in the lamp

I wonder if the ballast is what causes the orange pulsing in the EOL end? maybe trying to adjust for the varying power draw?
@XmasLightsGuy
@XmasLightsGuy Жыл бұрын
Yeah, its gotta be related to the ballast, not all of them will do it.
@XmasLightsGuy

I've also noticed that when the orange glow gets brighter, it also dims the 2nd bulb.. so the bad one is drawing more power at that point.

@@XmasLightsGuy yeah I noticed that too. it's very strange how fluorescents go out on electronic ballasts. I prefer preheat ballasts myself, they seem to make the bulbs last longer.
@XmasLightsGuy
@XmasLightsGuy Жыл бұрын
@@coalthedergsune Yeah it is. Some of the older generation electronic ballasts won't do it - generally rapid-start ones. Programmed-start won't either since most have EOL protection, they'll detect the lamp is bad and just shut down. I actually preferred the magnetic rapid-start back in the day. Now I mostly use electronic because of the energy-savings (generally go for the better-quality programmed-start ones, I even have some dimmable). But I still do have some old preheat and rapid-start in use.

@@XmasLightsGuy I've never really used an electronic ballast before, I don't really trust them because something happened in our old house that may have involved some flames, but preheat ballasts also really let you know when a bulb is EOL, especially the old ones, they flicker and make a lot of noise as if it's constantly trying to start the bulb.
