The DSi, Wii, 3DS, and Wii U had my favorites because you could organize them in any way you'd like and have your home screen feel like a video game compilation with bonus features built into your system. The Switch doesn't let you organize what you have in any order and instead only has your 12 most recently played games always in order of recency with everything else thrown into an "All Software" tab which can get really cluttery if you play more than 12 games on Switch.

Crazy how the DS and PSP had web browsers 20 years ago and the PS5 doesn’t.
@ValcudaАй бұрын
It's cause of console modding. The PS3, Vita, Nintendo Wii U, 3DS, and Wii, all had an exploit that took advantage of the web browser. If you wanna mod a PS3, Vita, or Wii U, you still have to use that browser exploit, just due to how powerful it is. There was even an exploit found in the PS4 via the web browser, despite that being extremely locked down. (Like the PS5, it's a system function, not an app the user can open) If you managed to navigate to google, you could go to a website, and jailbreak your PS4.
@Notdog610Ай бұрын
And those also had games, the PS5 still doesn't
@shaggy7599Ай бұрын
@@Valcuda yes I am aware of those exploits. However they take years to develop. It’s just regression and anti consumer. That’s a Sony/Nintendo problem. Not ours. Xbox I believe still has its browser enabled. They actually have zero modding protection at all. They implemented a built in dual boot mode iirc so you can boot into developer mode and install all the emulators you want. This actually prevents piracy as it would disincentivize the hackers to hack the console as it already is “good enough” of a built in solution. PS5 already has an exploit in a previous kernel build. Sony also believed in consumers right to mod their console in the PS3 era when they promised Linux on PS3. Although they backed out on that promise eventually.

I’ve always really liked the PS4 menu, personally. The nice shade of blue, the wave in the background, the calming music. It all just felt really relaxing. Of course though, it was nice when they really got into bringing out themes for it (shoutout to the Rez themes). The Switch is absolutely unforgivable though and just devoid of any personality, which is so antithetical to the Switch as a product. Nintendo is the only one that still feels like they’re making toys and I say that a positive. You feel that with the Switch and how unique and modular it is. Being able to hook it up to the TV or play it as a mobile device. Able to play with the joy-cons in the grip, apart or a more traditional pro controller. Even being able to give one of the joy-cons to a friend and that being able to be used as a smaller controller on its own. It just has so much personality baked into it as a product and then you turn it on and are greeted with that hospital waiting room of a menu.

It's interesting, while I've come to appreciate the frutiger aero aesthetic a lot more than I did when I was growing up, I do think it's an aesthetic that works best when it's being used in a weird and creative way (like the PS2, Gamecube and original X-Box) - but could be just a personal thing.

Dude, this video is awesome! I thought this would be a simple little trip down memory lane but you struck deep into nostalgia and the experience of growing up to see all of the 2000's. Glad I found your channel. Cheers!

Had this randomly playing in the background but 18:00 made me do a doubletake -- had to rewind that a few times to make sure I heard right. This may be some sort of mandela effect thing but as someone in my 30's I swear there was a handheld device from Nintendo before the DS. Can't quite put my finger on the name but if memory serves you could actually play video games on it too like Donkey Kong and it even had a port for the first Pokemon games. Before then Pokemon needed to be played with actual animals outside and if you wanted to trade them long-distance your internet consisted of a string of dental floss tied to a tree near your tent. The DS really revolutionized hand-held gaming by adding screens (thus greatly reducing the chances of injury whilst trying to catch wild Pokemon) and it truly showed the world what was possible, even in its infancy. 10/10 video.

I like the older menus because they took more effort to make well. Understanding how light refracts to make something look glossy despite not having RTX-on for running a 2D UI, how shadows work and interact with each other to not be overbearing. How to make a polygonal animation that can run at all times in the background without consuming too many resources. These are things that took skill. All the skill you need to make a modern flat UI is opening Paint, selecting the 'rectangle' tool and dragging the mouse a bit. It totally makes sense why this happened though. As physical media became the less preferred method of distribution, the console itself became in charge of selling you more games/software post-purchase of the console itself. So it no longer had any time or resources to waste on fancy menus that get in the way, it needed to solely focus on presenting as much content as possible to get you to buy more software. It also becomes easier to pass on the UI work to another team if all the design language says is "use flat colours and rectangles". It became corporate. Your game console isn't where you go to have fun anymore. It's where you go to see new content, consume new content, buy next things, repeat. Break the cycle.
