Sofia Sandoval I definitely agree, I feel like music even just those years ago still incorporated a lot of the late 2000s sound, so more bubble gum pop and a pretty energetic, upbeat and dance club feeling, it makes sense because that was the earlier part of this decade and it was still finding its identity. By 2016 pop music had enough time to find a new path, and so came the more slow tempo ballads, and incorporation of hip hop sounds. Personally I just enjoy the older sound but then again I grew up with it and I'm just more drawn to more generic, dance club songs. Plus I understand the younger kids need their new sound of music to grow up to and if it makes them happy, good on them😊👌

She’s been on the cover of Vogue 25 times... and now she’s has a fenty beauty that’s going to pay her bills LONG AFTER she’s done with music. Don’t discredit Rih. She’s not the richest woman in music for no reason.

y’all are talking about how pop music is dead bc of k-pop when in actuality western pop music is dying because of western artists not releasing the bangers like they used to and getting overshadowed by hip hop artists.
@seven3652
@seven3652 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly, the real problem is that we're not yanking out music that actually slaps. All western artists cared about is charts, money and fame. They don't care about the music anymore, it's all just clout. What a shame, I wont be surprised if they do get overshadowed by foreign artists. Latin American music and Kpop have been huge, and continue to be huge.
@MikoyanGurevichMiG21
@MikoyanGurevichMiG21 4 жыл бұрын
Pop music, like most other things today, is more commercialised than ever before. Kpop bands like BTS and Blackpink are sprung up straight from the talent assembly lines in Korea and spread to the world. That's what it is, BTS is a consumerist product made for a worldwide audience, to promote Korean culture etc. It's as much of a product as Samsung phones or Hyundai cars. The power and influence the record labels have, coupled with the mission of the Korean government to get the hallyu wave around the world- has worked perfectly this decade. Kpop has done what any other technological or mechanical product manufactured from Korea's industries have- bring tons of money and revenue to the economy thanks to the huge global interest in Korean culture and the eventual increase in tourism rates thanks to Kpop concerts and obsessed fanbases. I want more hits like Old Town Road and Gangnam Style, happening though, more songs blowing up from virality and not artificially generated trends. That was a positive trend of this decade. Gangnam Style being a hilarious parody of Korea's own culture and PSY's hilarious dancing infecting the world, and the sheer satisfaction of Old Town Road holding off more commercially produced and big budget tracks like Senorita from the #1 spot on Billboard. That's what I want, pop music having more hits from viral trends and relatable memes rather than being told by Max Martin or some Korean record label to bop to.

The Plastic Metalhead Shitposter i agree with most of what you’re saying and yes those kinds of songs would be great to have again. However, while kpop being a product for (mainly western) consumers, I think that is not the whole mission of a few kpop groups. Take BTS and BLACKPINK for example. Two opposite sides of the spectrum I want to talk on. Bts and their company from the beginning have talked about and rapped about how they want to be a new kind of idol. One with less restraints and more freedom. When they were underground rappers and chose to be idols they were criticized for choosing to become “commercialized Kpop idols”, so in their rap tracks they spoke on that and said they’d basically prove them wrong and lead a new generation of idols. Which is why I think they stand out. While, yes they are still commercialized to an extent (bc that’s how kpop has always been) they have more freedom. While BP barely have their own freedom and are heavily commercialized to just be popular. They are very talented, but their company limits them very much.

@@kstanner5909 Why? Like he said, she's already killed it all. I mean The Fame was a smash success, The Fame Monster was a smash success, and Born This Way and Artpop had a nice moderate success. She's already been there, done that. With her growth and evolution to a more dignified and elegant persona in Joanne and A Star is Born, I can hardly see her going back to simple pop. If anything it will be something new for her yet again.
@Layton_2010
@Layton_2010 4 жыл бұрын
K stanner - that right there is the logic that causes these singers to potentially end up falling off or lose focus of the reason why they started making music in the first place. Why do artists such as Gaga have to continue to prove themselves after so much success? This thought process is what’s wrong with the music industry today. Everyone is so focused on the numbers and the charts instead of the music. Once you’ve reached that point in fame where your name is a household name and you’re well known all over the world, you have nothing left to prove.

Taylor is an artist that doesnt care about making hits. She write songs because she loves writing it. You're right that she is on top of the game right now. When you become 30 your career will slowly die, just like what happened to Katy and other artist. She said in the interview that she wants to explore her music and also said that T.S8 will become a rock album and after T.S8 she will re-record her older albums so i think she wont stop making music until she finished the re-recordings. I think she will still write songs for movies the next. Fun Fact: Taylor Wrote "Love Story" when she was 14 and on the bedroom floor for 25 minutes.

In my opinion, Taylor Swift will never be irrelevant. She has the power of changing genres effortlessly. Plus each of her albums have completely different styles for eg rep is completely different from 1989, lover is the polar opposite of reputation and folklore is a unique piece of art and is something she's never done before. Long gone are the days where her music was just supposed to be heard by 'teenage girls' (whatever that is supposed to mean). With albums as mature as folklore and also to a great extent, Lover, her music is truly meant to be consumed and loved by all ages. Moreover, her songwriting is immaculate and it gets better in every album. Plus her fanbase is massive. So the same applies to Taylor what you said for Rihanna: People will never not care about her music ❤️✨

Gabriel what’s crazy to me is in the 90s the only big superstar that was selling was Madonna, every other one was a black artist, Mariah Carey, and Janet Jackson billboard named the two biggest musicals acts of the 90s, and they’re both black. Same with mj, Mary j bridge, Whitney Houston, tlc. And now you have white artists with black teams and black sounding songs but they’re white? Record executives would rather have a white person with a black sound than an actual black person. The industry came after every single superstar of the 90s.

@@minatozaki8271 Swift's early career as a country singer-songwriter plays an important role in shaping the modern country music scene. New York journalist Jody Rosen asserts that Swift is the first country artist whose fame reaches the world beyond the U.S. Following Swift's rise to fame, country labels have become more interested in signing young singers who write their own music. With her autobiographical narratives revolving around romance and heartbreak, Swift introduced the genre to a younger generation that could relate to her personally. Rolling Stone listed Swift's country music as one of the biggest influences on 2010s pop music, and ranked her 80th in the list of 100 Greatest Country Artists of All Time. The Guardian opined Swift led the poptimist movement in music with her ambitious artistic vision. Her onstage performance with guitars contributed to the "Taylor Swift factor", a phenomenon to which media outlets attribute the rise in guitar sales to women, a previously ignored demographic. Publications consider Swift's million-selling albums in the 2010s an anomaly in the streaming-dominated music industry, following the decline of the album era. She is the only artist to have four albums sell over a million copies within one week since Nielsen SoundScan started tracking sales for the Billboard 200 in 1991. For New York magazine, Swift's million sales figures prove that she is "the one bending the music industry to her will". According to Rolling Stone, Swift's opposition to low royalty from streaming services, such as Spotify and Apple Music, and efforts to claim ownership to her masters, were two of the defining moments for the music industry in the 2010s decade. Her actions have fostered debate over reforms to on-demand music streaming and prompted awareness of intellectual property rights among younger musicians. Quartz regarded Swift the most important artist of the millennial era. Swift was named Woman of the Decade of the 2010s by Billboard and became the first woman to earn the title Artist of the Decade (2010s) at the American Music Awards. She won the Brit Awards' Global Icon Award "in recognition of her immense impact on music across the world". Swift has influenced various mainstream and indie singers, including Ruth B., Shamir Bailey, Kelsea Ballerini, Priscilla Block, Bailey Bryan, Camila Cabello, Sabrina Carpenter, Sofia Carson, The Chainsmokers, Daya, Frances Forever, Selena Gomez, Ellie Goulding, Conan Gray, Girl in Red, Griff, Halsey, Niall Horan, Little Mix, Shawn Mendes, Soccer Mommy, Maren Morris, Nina Nesbitt, Niki, Finneas O'Connell, Maisie Peters, Freya Ridings, Olivia Rodrigo, Troye Sivan, Slayyyter, Tegan and Sara, Tessa Violet, The Vamps, Hayley Williams, and Zahara.

Lorde killed pop music. After Royals blew out and became such a tremendous hit, a lot of artists tried to copy its downbeat, less energetic sound. Soon afterwards, rap and R&B took over, and most pop music that makes the charts became pretty downbeat and sad, when not downright dark and gloomy like Billie Eilish' music, completely different from early 2010's Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Kesha... As much as I hate how she's influenced the industry at large, I love Lorde though! She's easily my favorite artist. It amuses me too that most of Melodrama is basically pure upbeat, danceable electropop, when as I've said she's probably the person who's contributed the most to the decline of that genre lol

I think Kpop's popularity will keep increasing for 1-2 years but then either go down or grow very slowly or won't grow at all cuz currently BTS is leading the kpop wave and they'll have to serve in the Korean military soon ( from end of 2020 ) so they'll be gone for at least 2 years . Blackpink is another famous group but they won't be big forever too . Other than these 2 groups other groups do not have any considerable impact . Off course if another huge group emerges then things would be different but being a Kpop fan I'll say Kpop will never take over but will always remain there . I think Lover was the close out of the popular, relationship involved, in the public eye Taylor. A lot of what has happened to her in her career peak has been not just about the music but more than anything about her. 1989 was her commercial peak and Reputation was the peak of the discussions in her private life. Honestly Reputation was pretty much necessary for that reason alone. Lover basically said "I am happier now, and I am ready to move onto the next phase of my life". It explains about how she is basically over all the drama and just wants to live her best life how she wants, away from all the commercial pressure. In that way I believe that if she tries the 2020s will have her BEST music she has ever written. She has the musical chops, but I do feel the commercial haze and lust for stardom is what got in the way of some of her worst music this decade. Now that in life she is starting to care less and less about numbers and more about her craft, I think Taylor's magnum opus and most culturally significant music to come. Taylor plays the long game, and thus I think will be a great legacy artist for that reason. Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Beyonce all released some of their greatest works late into their career, and I feel Taylor will do that. Her next move after The Voice is covering her old songs, which in itself I feel is a summarization ploy for her career so far. Closing out an era with her first self-owned music and going into a new one with everything being owned by her and her alone. Being settled into a more happy and settles life. Being set for life due to royalties in itself. Going into her 30s. Definitely music from now on will be about making music and because of her passion first and foremost. Making music because she loves it and loves entertaining others, no matter how successful it might be. I think this is the first time in Taylor's career where we really can't predict what she has up her sleeve next. After she covers her own music in an amazing power move I think she can go...anywhere frankly. I am not saying she will go full alternative or country again or rock. Pop will be her main lane, but a different for flavorful and interesting pop. A la artists such as Lorde and St. Vincent. Or maybe Lover the song is a sign that country Taylor is back. Who knows.

But anyhow, you can't deny that she's a genius when it comes to producing and creating music, establishing her brand, and resonating with every sound of each generation and music era!

Pop music absolutely died in 2016 and was buried by the time the pandemic came around and TikTok rose to the top. I'm so tired of contrived, formulaic faux woke sad girl anthems. Where are the bops? The sweeping choruses we all would sing along to? Hell, we didn't even have a song of the summer. Tiktok has made sure pop music never gets back to its golden era. Even K-Pop, previously praised for its ode to 00s bubblegum pop, has started sounding like just another Western generic Tiktok snore. BRING BACK FUN POP

Probably unpopular hot take: the reason why it feels like 'death' of pop music for many of us versus just the natural evolution is that we're getting older. Real talk most of us who are talking about this were born in the 90s and you can tell because the artists you mentioned defines our growth, our teeny years with britney up to our crazy young adult years with miley and so on. It feels like death because its the death of our youth. Pop music isn't for us anymore in the sense that the wonder, newness and excitement is something we are ageing out of. Fan culture is still alive and well with Ariana, BTS , Billie Eyellish, Shawnila, Normani, Chloe + Halle, Khalid, Halsey etc for this next generation. And yes there are more to come. Physical sales are coming back, people camping out for SNL, etc that shits alive its just we specifically dont care as much anymore. We're growing jaded and set in what we defined as highlights in music. Somebody born in 71, felt these same feelings when Michael Jackson, Madonna, hair metal, etc started to decline. So we may not feel the impact of today's artists as much, a person who is 8-12 right now will have a different experience. It will probably never feel the same for us. But that doesnt take away from the impact these stars are currently having. It's a new era and I just wish we'd look at it in a different light. And I do feel we need some more fresh meat. Its just the start of a new era that the aforementioned are ushering in and it feels particularly stale to us 90 kids who want to be excited by pop culture again. I highly recommend BTS. I think they, Ariana and Billie are the most exciting things in pop culture rn and will be the template for this next era. Also generally speaking kpop has some excellent producers, choreo and live performances that are just destroying american performers and really just the industry right now.

@Bird Flox I agree with you. I personally do not like Billie's songs. I do listen to her because she's talented but She's still not giving me what I used to receive in 2011-2015. Jessie J, Rihanna, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift (I still can't get over 1989), Carly Rae Jepsen, Nicki Minaj, P!nk, Kesha, OneDirection, Ellie Goulding, Conor Maynard (Turnaround and Animal are still my fav), Justin Bieber (A lot changed after Purpose), Kesha (Cmon, Die Young, Crazy Kids) I can go on for the rest of this night. Back then every song was memorable. That's why we can still remember them even today. Even hip hop was not like the way it is today. I am a 99 but I do agree that music has changed a lot and only few people will manage to save it. I love Camilla but I didn't enjoy the whole of her debut album. Normani, I enjoyed her songs with Calvin more than Waves and Motivation. I just hope Rihanna will come back and save Pop music. Anti was successful just because it was "Rihanna" but it wasn't the best album. Unapologetic was ❤❤😭😭. Let's just remember how "Diamonds" used to sound back then. Everyone loved that song. I can't say the same about "Billie's Bad Guy😂 I am sorry but Bad guy is one of the songs that I do not understand how they are getting so much hype) I hear everyone saying Billie is the Ish but If Normani was singing Billie's songs they would've been called trash. Her Motivation song was called "Generic" and people keeps on saying she has weak vocals but they never say the same about Billie😂 and we can both tell that they have soft voices. I guess this is also about "Who wants to suppot who" it is no longer about talent. "Bad Guy" is such a generic song😂😂 (I don't mean to start a fight with Billie's fans) But let's just be real, would y'all still listen to Billie's songs if Normani (With a soft voice like Billie's) was singing them? No!!
