A couple factors. 1. When the economy is bad people just don't have the money to spend on luxury items. 2. As the retro collectors get older we just don't need/want to buy more. I agree, in the pantheon of collectables, video games are very "young." I do think video games will have collectability in the future. But really just items that are in mint condition and in working order. Yet still a speculative market, video games are super niche and it will run out of steam. The sustainability of the "collecting" market is absolutely dependent on younger generations interest. Stamp collecting, model trains, mid-century milk glass all had their time and essentially died because younger generations didn't want to keep the markets alive. My concern with retro gaming specifically is that there really is no need to buy games and consoles when you can download them or put them on an emulator. Kids now a days like to convenience of just downloading entertainment and don't want the clutter.

The 90s retro market are already saturated that there aren’t anymore collectors buying NES, Genesis, SNES cartridges and young kids don’t care about consoles at all.

resellers do the opposite. thanks to resellers massive collections that were rotting in some basement are now into the world. there is truth to some games being artificially inflated such as "def jam fight for NY" i was around when it came out and even owned it in the past.......................it sucks lol. silent hill "everyone growing up had at lest one" is another example of a false rare, but all the games you see in youtube videos labeled "filler" have never been cheaper. most of the best games fall under the inexpensive filler category are the games and thanks to resellers pawn shops and retro shops have stock.
@Megamon0001Ай бұрын
@@alaricbarber3680 resellers scalp old games for personal profit. They’re games that are meant to be played and preserved. If the collector is doing things right, then the games don’t rot in someone’s basement
@alaricbarber3680Ай бұрын
one tip to game collectors watch the up swing and buy before a price hike. ps3 for example is about to move from outdated to retro in the next 5 years. also look for true rare's not the games that are hyped now. back to silent hill, with all the copy's being saved and cataloged soon the market will be flooded and the price will drop over time. yet children's games are seen as worthless yet how many copys of dora the explorer made it without little fingers destroying the disks? keep in mind not all rare games are fake "colosseum road to freedom" for example was rare even back then. yet it is half the price of Def Jam or silent hill? sorry i'm collecting ps2 so examples had to come from that.

A couple things. Retro games became more expensive than new games. That and big companies have caught on with remasters, rereleases and Nintendo online, game pass ect. We're moving from collector/reseller market to a game player market. I think.

You know how I picture the future of retro gaming and the segregation of digital and physical? This is more of a movie dialog image but… Imagine a world of technology to the point where everyone is lazy and things are a click away of vacuuming your carpets and mowing your grass and everything is instant. No one has working hands. Everything is easy and simple. That’s the world of digital media. Now imagine underneath that world is retro gaming and collecting. Dark markets with people who are vigilant, watching for scams, neon lights and everything is for sale at a cost. Exploring in the vast markets where people explore to find their interests and talk to people with similar interests, because that’s what makes physical media fun is the exploration and getting that nostalgic collection high of finding that game you’ve been looking for. Retro collecting in a way is a drug and it releases a satisfaction feeling when you complete a need. Thus the life of retro collecting. A world of people who will goto farmers markets, garage sales, the Goodwill, any dark hole to meet and talk about retro collecting to fill that need and get that nostalgic high.

You were thinking about Lootboxes, and they ARE a thing again, SONY brought them back in recent times or didn't you notice? And there's another reason why people turn to modern (harder to emulate if it can be done at all), pc version (if it has one) would have higher spec requirements to meet (which also means a more costly computer to buy or build and maintain Idk about only GOTY versions being bought, that was much more of a trend in the ps3 and ps4 era rather than nowadays. So was looking for single player (which is still done), But the focus of the generation is better last gen, faster loading speeds and multiplayer nonsense Nintendo is tempting us with digital downloads but physical takes up less installed space and the limit is 2 TB+internal (32 to 64 GB) Without swapping a SD card that is. Good luck getting that physically. Last i checked the highest SD card microcenter carried was 1.5 TB for $125 usd
