unironically the scene where superman stays on the bridge and waits patiently for the kid to go reach for his game and hugs him only to make sure the kid is okay and not traumatized is one of the most superman things i've seen in media... i do love that scene.

they funny thing about this horrifyingly violent movie is that this is the best example of superman being just a good guy, trying to help, and making people feel safe. if it wasn't for the monster rampaging through the city killing everyone he meets this would be a heartwarming superman tale.

@@Draliseth likely not, but it is grossly overshadowed by the prevelailing theory the comics even push, which is that its a conflux of countless things that Clark actively does outside of the costume to hide who he really is. The screen test when casting for Superman needs to be the scene in the 1978 movie where Christopher Reeve completely transforms his body language and voice between the two characters in-camera. If an actor doesn't have that, he just doesn't understand either character.

Death of Superman is one of my favorite Superman stories. It's easy to have strong ideals when you're uncontested. And it's important to remember that "everyone" includes the villains themselves wherever possible. Both the Death of Superman and Superman vs. the Elite go out of their way to show that Superman will take _horrendous_ injuries before he'll even think about using enough force to potentially kill someone who's trying as hard as they can to kill him. Justice League: Doom takes that idea to the point where that tendency is Superman's only vulnerability. Without that, kryptonite is a mere inconvenience.

They made a novelization of the Death/Return of Superman comics called 'The Death and Life of Superman'. It gives a great deal more insight into who Superman is and how he thinks. And it actually manages to make the fight with Doomsday more painful. Clark holds back. A lot. And during that final battle in Metropolis that leads to his death, he realizes something: his holding back is costing lives. People died because he pulled his punches with Doomsday. And he decides there, even if it kills him, he's done holding back. He'll save Metropolis. And he does just that. The fight becomes so much more even when Clark lets go and fights Doomsday with no restraint. Letting his anger drive him, blaming himself because he feels every moment he held back resulted in death and destruction that he could have prevented. Then he dies and takes Doomsday with him. That book gives such a personal look at who Superman is, and more importantly, who Clark is underneath everything.

It can never be said enough that the SOUL of Superman is that of the human Clark Kent, who grew up on a farm with loving parents. Being Clark and living Clark's life is what gives him the heart and desire to go on. He feels obligated to use his super powers to protect people because, to borrow from another universe, with great power comes great responsibility, but he doesn't wake up every day because of the urge to save the day, he wakes up every day to be Clark, to love his parents, to love Lois and to be a good friend to those close to him. None of that takes super powers.

So I've read the Death of Superman comic multiple times and it's definitely one of my favorite stories just because of how brutal it is. Back then Doomsday didn't need to fly or shoot lasers to be dangerous. He was just a giant hulking monster that no one could really stop. Even when Superman entered the fight, he never had the upper hand for long. Any ideas he had to overpower and take down Doomsday were quickly put to rest by Doomsday's sheer brute force. Until the two got into Metropolis when the fight suddenly changed from a clash of titans to an all out slug fest between 2 monsters. The two were hitting each other blow for blow. No heat vision, no flying, just punch after punch until finally, it's a double knock down. Not exactly a knock out when both of them were knocked dead.

A good video analysis of the death of Superman animated film. I honestly think that it is a good Superman film. In spite of Superman having an awesome and brutal fight with Doomsday, who defeated every Justice League he fought and who Superman had to give up his life to defeat, Clark's biggest challenge in the film is opening himself to Lois, who he does have feelings for. It makes this Superman very human, and how he is likable throughout this film makes it all the more tragic when he dies. This version of Superman earned the love of the people and Lois, and his funeral scene feels like a scene of people mourning over the death of Superman. How sad.

The one inconsistency I find with this movie is that the real Justice League still lost to Superman. It was all too plausible that Doomsday ran train on the Justice League in the original comic because the 90's Justice League left a lot to be desired. Their heaviest hitters were Maxima, Boodwynde, and Booster Gold (everyone's favorite characters). It was not surprising Superman went down the way he did. But this team? Of A-Listers, the team you think of when you think of the Justice League, getting trounced by Doomsday? Ain't no way.

It's unfortunate that this will probably be the best DoS we'll get. Not saying that this isn't enough, but to have one on the silver screen as a live-action film in a proper manner would hit differently. The JL already being formed is a necessity, showing not only Doomsday's ferocity and strength but also the before and after of said tragedy. It would've also explored just how much of an impact Superman has on the world.

I love this movie. It was the first Superman media to make me a Superman fan after hating the character for years. This movie did alot to make him feel relateable and more like a decent, likeable man. There was no air of pretensiousness which often is what put me off with the character. In alot of his portrayals there's a very subtle air of arrogance I find...mostly in animation. But even when he says the line "I am the cavalry" I don't get that from him. Its true because the whole league got washed...and it almost seems more like he was trying to hype himself up too. He knew if he went down to doomsday it was over for everyone else and you could sense the stress and doubt building in him. This is the movie that really made me root for Superman the whole time. This movie made me feel like Superman really was just a guy doing his best with the gifts he has. Beautifully uncomplicated.

Sometimes us Superman fans get upset at people calling Superman a boring character, and saying they don't like him. But we have to take a step back and remember he has been betrayed very poorly to a younger generation. In popular media he has mostly been portrayed as some naive goody two shoe. Who spends all day oppressing Batman, telling him to be nicer to criminals. I loved how this movie showed people didn't worship Superman as some type of Jesus. But he really was a man of the people, who gave his all everyday to protect them.

@GamblerToGuru That's something else I really liked is the snapshot into how the people on the street saw Superman. Some ask for a picture, some point him out...but alot of people see him and keep walking. Is he a big deal in the city? Yes, but nobody is gonna worship him and he doesn't want that either.

The DCAU at this time had flaws but man did I love it and this still holds in my top 5 fav superhero films. You already know the story from the title and from the history but the emotional payout of the story/characters just shines a beautiful light on the man of steel. Great movie and awesome content as usual 🤙

I love the Death of Superman comics line. I even own the novelization of the comics. While this animated depiction is more accurate to the violence of the story, it happened to the DCAMU Superman, which is the weakest (in terms of character depth) depiction of Superman to date. I was practically cheering for Doomsday. The Apakolips War movie was cathartic watching the DCAMU versions of the characters get brutalized. It’s so good to see DC animation getting back to making good movies (except for the GL movie, which was a huge disappointment). Admittedly, this was one of the better DCAMU films, but I could not get invested with it being connected to the DCAMU.

And it's kind of completely ruined when you know he doesn't actually die. I knew since it's the #1 recommended Superman comic based on some lists I found... and Comicstorian's coverage and stuff... and then the movie came out like 10 years after I knew and probably 20 after the actual comics... and the DCEU did the same. I wish they had adapted it so I didn't know. Made it so it wasn't Doomsday, so I didn't expect the death... and then maybe wouldn't have expected the resurrection in the next movie. Maybe then it could've meant something.

The only thing that bothers me is that this is part of the DCAMU. I don't really care for the rest of the movies in it. This is easily the best one by a Smallville country mile.

Maybe the biggest thing I didn't like about this movie was how they cut the Mitch subplot. In the original book, Mitch was a regular kid who thinks Superman is kinda lame for not killing the bad guys. He echoes a lot of the talking points about Superman that Guy Gardner (in-universe) and the hardening 90s audience might have had about Big Blue. He ends up changing his tune when Doomsday levels his house and Superman stops to save Mitch and his mom from certain doom. It does a lot of thematic work here, by showing the impacts these fights have on regular people and why Superman and the people care so much.

I don't like the animation of modern DC. Every character looks the same. But dang...they created the best wonderwoman. She speaks behaves like a woman out of time but not like a ditzy girl (like Gal Gadot) but like a warrior. And her moveset is a good mix of fantasy sword fighting and greek mud wrestling.

I think a good contrast to Supermans fight with Doomsday is the fight between the characters Allmight and All for One from MHA, which seemed to try to be the counterbalance to "The death of Superman". Intentionall or not Allmights final encounter with his arch nemesis came accross as trying to rebuild what Supermans fight with Doomsday deconstructed. We were after all knee deep in the age of deconstruction led by Moore and Miller, so the cynisism in the original comics was through the roof while MHA embraced the ideal of the silver age heroes: Finding hope and fighting for hope, which reflected in the stories respective climaxes: Superman literally gives his life to save the day and leaves his newfound home without one of its bravest defenders, while Allmight finds a way to defeat his villain while surviving and sparks hope in a new generation of heroes succeding him. Both were gone respectively (with Superman, well, being dead and Allmight having to retire from being a super hero), but the message of the outcomes couldn't be more different and highlight what super hero stories can tell as a genre about the nature of good people and the results of their deeds.
