I think Chaykin hits on the head. Writers can be adapted to screens which will ditch most of the art in favor of live action and CGI FX. Too many times comics are seen as IP fodder rather than the genre itself.

The reason we dont see comic book superstars like image founders is because comics are no longer that popular, its spot being taken by games and manga at the end of 90s and throughout 2000s and these days its also streamers youtube entertainers. Comics just cant compete no longer, things change way too much.

I agree to an extent,I just think there are not the right people curating the culture of American comics is all. Because manga so gaining popularity, so it not like ppl aren’t interested in comics it’s just we don’t have a the right people leading the culture.

@@Covaslookout Perhaps you right, maybe comics do need another image comics revolution, with more independent creators doing their own thing and challenging the DC/MARVEL monopoly once again.

Your video was 1000% on mark! American comics focus on the Writer. On the eastern hemisphere with European [Bande Dessinee] & Asian [Manga] comics, the Artist & Writer is one person. Me personally, what makes me pick up a comic book first and foremost is the ART. I'm very visual so the art has to get my attention. Can American Comics get a new wave of artistic superstars via Artists/Writers? Yes, they can. It can be done via Independent & Alternative comics creators. The major players (DC & Marvel) is too WOKE, POLITICALLY CORRECT and BROKEN. They've ran out of originality and their brutally cannibalizing on well established comic book characters. Creative Superstar hopefuls will be buried in their politics via their editors. Nuff Said! Peace!

Comics shift between artist and writer focus. The creator of attack on Titan is not a celebrity. Celebrity is being known outside of your niche. I don't know who he is. Rob Lifeless, much as I hate him, did Levi's commercials. Todd McFarlane marketed himself into celebrity by crossing niches. That was a special era.

Hickman left Marvel and built his own brand through Substack. I'd say that's pretty superstar status within the niche. There weren't mainstream superstar artists before the Image 5, and there haven't been since. Like you said. They were outliers.

I agree with you for the most part but there are celebrities who are popular just for there niche like singers, actors and athletes.
@IndieHypeMan

@@CovaslookoutBut there's a difference of those who are popular in the niche, and those who have surpassed it. Lebron is more than just basketball. Kapernick is more than just football. Shaq is more than just basketball. But as much as I love my fellow Balkans, the majority of people don't know who the fk Nikola Jokić and Luka Dončić are. Most people don't know who Devin Booker is. That's the difference between superstars and popular in their niche. To bring it back to the topic of discussion, Dan Mora is WILDLY popular in the comic book sphere. Has been for years. But he's not a superstar in the mainstream.

I think we forget about the comic sells of Liefeld,Mcfarlane and Lee,all 3 hold the top 3 comic sells in comic's history.Then did the same thing with Image Comics,selling millions of comicbooks puts you in superstar status. And you don't have to draw-WELL-to achieve this status either ( look at Liefeld's art ) LOL.
@IndieHypeMan
@IndieHypeMan Жыл бұрын
@@kerry-j4mThey sold millions of #1s at the literal beginning of the speculator boom? Holy crap, how did they do it? 🤣 It took Liefeld 14 months to put out 0-5, and then another FULL YEAR to get to issue 6. Literally nobody cares that Youngblood #1 was for a brief moment the highest selling indie comic. Even Rob doesn't care. Because the only thing he won't shut up about is X-Force #1. Even though that lost the title to X-Men #1 less than a year later. And on top of that - this being the MOST IMPORTANT aspect: These sales are only to comic shops, and you can TO THIS DAY find countless X-Force #1s still polybagged, selling for $1 or less. So Even that claim is worthless. Ultimately, superstardom is dependent on actions and acclaim in the mainstream. Jim Lee is a comic book legend, but he's nobody's Taylor Swift, Michael Jackson, or even Dwayne The Rock Johnson.

No Superstar in Comics anymore? WRONG! DAN MORA is a superstar artist in the making. He is drawing more than one monthly book and tons of DC covers. So... He is like a machine and he draws fast! 😅

you left out Frank Miller as a comic book superstar. Certainly known outside the comics field for his films. Otherwise you are pretty much on the money. The Image guys are an anomaly in the modern age. In the 1940's the newspaper strip artists/writers were superstars ; Milton Caniff, Hal Foster, Chester Gould, Al Capp, etc. But even Stan didn't become a household name until the movies started coming out.

I feel like Frank miller became popular outside of comics after his reign in comics as were the image guys were popular while they were also putting out popular comics.but Frank miller and even Mike Magnolia can be in the conversation of celebrity comic creators! Also glad you enjoyed the video! More to come!

By that rule Ed Bruebaker is a superstar bc Winter Soldier is one of the best superhero films of all time. Nah. Miller is a decrepit angry old man, and should stick to the con circuit. Though I will give him credit bc he's creating a platform for other creators.
