I'm an actor, among a number of other things. I've gotten just three gigs in my life. I am not a celebrity and thus am not rich beyond my needs. You also have no idea who I am, but I can guarantee that my solution to isolation during a raging pandemic isn't to put on a fashion show (credit: Rihanna's idea during an interview). I love the girl, she's a killer actor in every role she gets... but the disconnect... well, it is disappointing.

We are more likely to go to a certain director’s movie than a star’s. A Christopher Nolan or Martin Scorsese movie is appealing because we expect quality. M. Night Shyamalan used to be a draw but the last few years have been disappointing. We feel like we know what to expect from a Tim Burton movie. Personally, I’m sick of IPs being run into the ground. A lesser known story in the hands of a proven director is what I look for.

I do like IPs or small ips like biopics of famous people. For example bohemian rhapsody was sort of an IP film. The sole idea of going to see a film about Queen drew a lot of people in, that film didn’t need a movie star to sell the same goes with Elvis. So yeah Biopics of Bands and singers are sort of ip films I like.

That's where I land too. I'll go see a movie for its director or studio/distributor (I catch most A24 movies). Can't remember the last time I saw a movie primarily for an actor, maybe Step-Brothets for Will Ferrell. There are actors whose comedic sensibilities I'll show up for, but Hollywood doesn't do comedies anymore.

We also don't have the limitation of waiting to see who we want whenever they release a film, and being at the mercy of a movie of theirs coming out only once every few years, and that's the only time we get to see them. We have WAY more control over consuming our entertainment than ever, so it's not as special as it was, especially in the pre-TV days of Hollywood. It's just not that big a deal anymore.

I think there is more to it than just that. I think its a bit deeper than just the fact that Ryan Gosling didn't manage to draw. I think its the more the fact that people are viewing films differently. Lots of people have a subscription with a streaming service. If you have Netflix and/or Prime there is a relatively high chance that these kinds of films will find their way onto those services sooner rather than later and you didn't pay anything more than just your subscription. Movie tickets have got expensive and unless you are a die-hard movie watcher, you aren't going to turn out for every film. Most of the movie going public in a lot of the places in the world have been hit with the inflation, plus Covid and the stupid strikes have also damaged the way things were pushed out. It used to be a conveyor belt that generated buzz. Now we kind of see stars in a different light, and its not always a good light. I rate both Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, but the Fall Guys is a remake of an old concept that last showed in the 1970s. There are reasons things die. Because they got old. Hollywood is too risk averse to try new things. It puts down too much dollar on trying to make billion dollar movies, and doesn't make sensible choices often enough. I don't think they can even make $50M dollar movies very well anymore. The heart isn't in it anymore. Margot Robbie. You have to know where she came from. And Most Americans don't. She came from an Australian Soap opera that was very popular in Britain. She already had market appeal before she got into the famous Hollywood roles. She was acid tested already. She had screen time that many young American actresses don't have. You find many "Neighbours" alumni in Hollywood including; Russel Crowe, Guy Pierce and more. Isla Fisher, who you may or may not know, was also acid tested in an Australian soap opera "Home and Away". She has added market appeal, because she was known before she got the bigger roles. One last thing. Marvel. It's a tried and tested formula. It relies on people knowing the comics. Therefore, by virtue, it's not original, not even remotely. The comic book creators did all the heavy lifting long before this was a thing. The studios don't do risks anymore. There's nothing new. I feel sorry for the Gen Z generation, you've got nothing new to enjoy. It's just rehashes of things that used to be successful. It's not really a celebration of your generation. The 80s and 90s had celebrations of its generations in film. It's not like that anymore. It's about the message these days.

I honestly feel like it’s theatrical releases. When he mentioned “name a recent non-Marvel Chris Evans” movie, I immediately a thought Gray Man on Netflix (ironically starring Ryan Gosling). That movie was a big hit on streaming (post-Avengers/pre-Barbie). Nobody wants to see an actor in a theatrical release that’s non-IP. Even The Rock can’t carry a movie (Black Adam flipped yet Hobbs and Shaw did well).

Social Media killed the awards shows, since there is no need to watch them to see the stars anymore since they are on your phone! Star Wars was more about the overall story than one character. Han really stood out as a character more than the others, so I could see how Harrison Ford’s likability would carry over to Indiana Jones, and other movies.

The vast majority of talented actors aren't movie stars in the same way that the vast majority of talented singers aren't Taylor Swift or Beyonce. I also feel like people also fixate way too much on what should or deserves to be popular. And still finds time to write a diverse range of albums that always go #1 and are critically appreciated, as well. She's one in a billion. If she doesn't deserve it, then no one does.

I came to the surprising realization that nothing will get me to go back to the movies - I did a little thought experiment where it got to the point that even if someone gave me free tickets to go and watch any movie currently out...I wouldn't go! I have no idea why I've fallen so out of love with the place - but it's not just me feeling like this, it seems a majority of people are like this now. It just seems like so much effort to get my arse to the movies. I prefer to just stay indoors and watch TV if I have to. Saying that, I don't even watch TV anymore. I think I'm just over Hollywood.

Linda Eder is the best living singer on the planet yet she’s not a huge star known by all. She orchestrated that controlling media attention to have a normal life, appearing in solo appearances on her tour. She will normally do 30-35 appearances a year, just enough to live comfortably.she hates the star machine. She sold out Carnegie Hall in under an hour. Those that hear her once are instant fans. She actually is better in person than any studio recording. Breath taking talent. I’ve seen her 7 times and she was fabulous each time with my jaw dropped and my heart soaring. She didn’t want to be a “ star” a reluctant Diva. Probably the most humble singer of all time. Her fans chase her , she doesn’t chase her fans. She loves her fans no doubt but sees herself as a regular normal person and something tells me that she isn’t as impressed with herself as her fans are.

If we’re thinking about movie stars that have come through in the 2010s, I do think Jennifer Lawrence is a bona fide movie star. Aside from the 7 sequels she has made there are 6 other films on her resume that have exceeded $100m, most of them very much built around her. Her 2012-2018 run from a commercial perspective is very impressive, and JLaws 2012 was probably the last time there was a true stratospheric launch of a movie star in the traditional sense. (Hunger Games and Silver Linings).

I agree with your overall point about celebrities, but the Daisy Ridley example is probably one of the worst possible examples to use to prove the point. The same exact phenomenon happened with Mark Hamill in the 1980s. He was propelled to superstardom by the original Star Wars in the 70s/80s, then after Return of the Jedi, his career consisted of more obscure roles and voice acting. His film roles were relatively obscure and nowhere near the success of Star Wars. Star Wars and type-casting and all that is just a special case and even that is unpredictable, since the complete opposite happened to Harrison Ford.

The fact is it was better for both movie stars and fans when they were largely mysterious personas that lived mostly as fantasy within the individual minds of the public. As just like the old saying goes, You never want to meet your heroes because the reality tends to be a crushing let down compared to your idealized concept of who they are and what they were probably like in person. Because most of them payed a great deal of money to create and cultivate a very artificial version of who they are. Right down to the plastic surgery, hair dye and make up (both women and men tend to wear) in public and for photo shoots. Unfortunately most of the time These people, while no doubt are just regular people like anyone else, are also seen and treated as brands moreso than human beings ( which is kind of sad). So they are surrounded by handlers and assistants and publicists etc who keep them separate from everyday life. Causing a very serious issue of detachment which only grows worse and more extreme over time, especially if they continue to grow in popularity and bankability. Those with vested interests at stake go to greater degrees to keep them in a guilded cage like real life human show ponies, which often translates to "Do whatever, agree with or say whatever makes them happy and compliant. Whatever they want or need get it for them. Whatever they complain about agree with them so as to calm them down as quickly as possible." Sometimes that means giving them drugs or whatever other vices they turn to in order to deal with the often immense pressure that might be hanging over them. It is a very self indulgent, co dependent, sick environment. And the people at the center...well let's just say that only a fraction of people on Earth, those who likely had a solid foundation of support.. possibly rooted in family and most often some type of faith or spiritual center, are capable of enduring such situations for long term and not wind up deeply corrupted or twisted by it. For one thing they are paid ridiculous amounts of money for doing things that don't really balance out to justify such obscene amounts of money. Which means most of the people around them likewise make money directly or indirectly as a result of their level of fame and success. So it is in their own interests to keep the machine going. Or those people survive off the scraps thrown at them. So it becomes nearly impossible to tell who is genuinely a sincere friend or just another leech trying to get something from them or make money as a result of something they do or can get them to agree to do. Which is a horrible situation in itself. Next, the money and constant noteriaty will inevitably go straight to their head and unless they have that grounded support system and people who will be real with and check them, it begins to distort reality. Add to that the army of sycophants they become surrounded by trying to"always keep them happy", again.. without those real people and support system, to Keep them grounded, they begin to have a very distorted view of themselves and often begin to believe the hype written about them... they believe the fantasy. So they develop a Pathologically bloated belief in their importance and brilliance. Whereas they no longer allow themselves to acknowledge their flaws or failures... because in their twisted minds they are above all that. "Otherwise why else would so many people love them, and why would they be so successful, and why would everyone always tell them they are right and it's the other people who are in the wrong?" In other words they fully become committed to the fantasy ideal of themselves and refuse to see the flawed reality. Sometimes to the point they begin to loose touch with and have psychotic breaks with reality. Especially where heavy substance abuse is involved because that only suppresses other emotions and fears which build up like a pressurized line until it bursts. Which we have all seen situations where celebrities loose their shit and it is deeply sad and often has tragic outcomes. The thing is most people who dream about fame are already the type to rely too much on the opinions of others or are insecure or narcissistic (who themselves tend to be the most insecure of all) to begin with. But really this can happen to ANYONE. Again it is only a tiny number of people who have the psychological, spiritual, emotional strength to withstand that. And probably nobody in the world who can manage to do it alone. It takes a strength that is the rarest of all in people. A kind that mostly must be learned and maybe 1 out of a billion might be born with a natural propensity for it. Even still these folks all tend to share something in common... they don't linger in that environment for long periods of time. They do whatever needs doing and then get as far from it as possible until the next thing then do it all over again.

Good points. However, i do not think all or perhaps even most narcissists are insecure. I have 2 close family members I strongly suspect of having full-blown NPD, and I'm pretty sure they think they are absolutely fantastic. They act at humble or even self-hating, but if you watch them long enough you start to think 'yeah I'm pretty sure only someone who thinks they are a superior lifeform would do/say that'. Thats my experience.

Thumbs up! You got kind of a weird scratchy voice, but I can tell you've embraced it. I subscribed and, believe or not (because it surprised me), I watched the whole video. "Big Jake" was my favorite movie when I was in K-4 elementary. I even liked John Wayne's more dramatic roles, too, though they did happen less since he'd developed his name as a "tough guy." John Wayne Toilet Paper! Rough, tough, and don't take shit off nobody! And, on a side note, I like Taylor L. He was hilarious in Grownups 2. And I like Evans in the small independent film "London" with Jason Statham and Jessica Biel. Ghosted was pretty good, too. I liked Lawrence in Winter's Bone, and that movie she played a Russian ballerina (she had a decent nude scene), and the Silver Linings Playbook. And I did like Maleficient, but I loved Fanning in Anywhere but Here, with Peter Dinklage. It's a sad, slow, cold, post-covid world that wiped out most of humanity... you know what? Look it up if you wanna see her in something else. Because you're talking about Beyonce right now: no, she is not awesome. She knows full well that a lot people who work in the factory that produces the products that she sells, work in appalling conditions, sometimes with minors. So, no, she is not awesome! She's not even that pretty. I've seen her leaked sex tapes when she's not wearing makeup. She has nothing to crow about beyond her nice breasts. I enjoyed this well-made video and all the included clips from old and slightly recent movies. I even found myself enjoying your more dry moments... my grandmother was England, so I like dry wit.

Good video, the research you did is very much appreciated. I personally think this is largely a matter of charisma finding different avenues to reach people; simply put, charismatic entertainers used to gravitate to the movies, it was the best way to reach millions of people. If you look at the most successful KZbinrs and streamers of today - they way their charisma drives their following, the way their fans have become ludicrous in their unyielding support - it's the same idol culture, just in a different medium

I think the 1960s through ~2000s was this period where there was a "transitional form" that merged IP with movie stars. The best example is probably Captain Kirk played by William Shatner in the 1960s. The audience draw was mostly the IP, that is, Captain Kirk as a character. But the idea of anyone other than William Shatner playing Captain Kirk seemed outrageous (at least until he was actually recast in 2009). So for a while, the movie star AND the IP held sway over the audience. As time went on, and as even legendary characters like Captain Kirk were eventually recast, the sway of the movie star lessened and lessened. But still, even today, the movie star holds SOME sway over the IP. Like, when they recast Han Solo, it was considered controversial and generated backlash.
