In this episode of South Central, host Dhanya Rajendran is joined by journalists Leena Reghunath, Nandini Chandrashekar, Poonam Agarwal and lawyer Anup Surendranath. The first topic they discuss is the differing judgments in two legal cases, one from West Bengal and one from Kerala. Why did a judge give Sanjay Roy life imprisonment in the RG Kar case and why did another judge give Greeshma the death penalty in the Sharon Raj murder?
The second topic is about the lack of transparency in the Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM CARES).

29:28 Im against the judgement of death penalty and dont understand whytf did they ask for her medical test. But this was a stupid argument that just because the society treats women in a certain way, Greeshma's actions can be justified. No level of mistreatment of women justifies killing. She is still a murderer. I know our society doesnt treat women well, but that doesnt mean all men are being treated like humans. Men get raped and molested too. I've undergone enough of these incidents firsthand & have come across males who have faced similar things. Fewer numbers doesnt mean they can be ignored. Law should evaluate the case irrespective of gender. We cant expect much in the country where abuse or rape against men are not even recognized. Hope death penalty is challenged & withdrawn or whatever. Sentencing someone to death just to send a message is stupid af.

Imagine a junior school student ask a silly question 'what is ratio between perimeter and area of a square?' Actually ratio is not defined between non homogeneous dimensions- just mechanically knowing sums however difficult they are from the standpoint of calculation will not eliminate illiteracy about ratio proportion irrespective of performance in exam. The two cases are totally non homogeneous except their potential to generate better 'trp' for many channels. R G Kar case is rarest of rare from the standpoint of investigational opacity. There are more than fifteen points as described in well known newspapers about the the surprising level of abaration from SOP root cause of that cannot be atleast to protect a group D staff. Infrastructural limitation to ensure a safe and secure working place is operational risk management failure of the administration, the accused cannot be more severely punished for that and the administrators cannot gloss over their blunder ( if not sin, assuming their self claimed innocence is true) Commiting a crime as a result of instant fulfillment of carnal desire and a premeditated murder cannot be penalised identically. It is a fact that a certain fraction of Indian judiciary misunderstood the difference between statistical estimation and mathematical precision as a result statistically low level of generic preponderance to delinquency among females was taken as mathematical precision and as a result of it gender non neautral charecteristics of certain law didn't come under judicial scrutiny- the judge perhaps wanted to remind that .

The public in general, in the Kolkata case, must remember certain facts: the CM Mamata Banerjee is a minister of Health as well of Home. The Hospitals and the Police are under the CM of West Bengal. The crime scene of Kolkata was tampered with by the police as well as the Doctors of West Bengal administration who came from outside to the crime scene, Why? To what purpose? The Principal of R G Kar Medical College Kolkata was given an another posting within 4 hours of his wanting to resign. That posting couldn't have been given without the CM's assent. In the Kolkata case, it seems, in hindsight, the police officers and the Doctor's were trying/ are trying to given cover to "some powerful people" who are behind the systemic corruption rampant in the medical administration in West Bengal! The West Bengal government and its political politicians have an axe to grind, in asking for a death sentence in case of Sanjoy Rai, it seems, and is very evident. That is why the State Government didn't give permission to prosecute the Principal of R G Kar Medical College Kolkata in the case of CBI Chargesheet. This raises doubts about the intention of CM Mamata Banerjee. The wsy the police disposed of the body of the victim without giving time to father and mother of the victim to be near the body of their daughter as per as their choice. It seems that Sanjoy Rai is an escape goat. The real culprits are walking free. Even the politicians of the highest order could be behind the murder.

Intercourse was discussed because section 364 b was applied. So it has to be proved that he was enticed away from his home for murder. I am surprised the person from NLU doesn't discuss any nuances of the case.

Intercourse should be discussed. I mean why not..? If it's not for our misandrist rape laws, greeshma's sexual adventures can be considered as rape under the section of "rape by pretext of marriage"

1:15:20 Wonder what the hangman feels after completing the whole process of execution. Do they feel that they have murdered someone while obeying the judgment or is it just a regular work for them. Just curious 🤔.

The basic difference in the two cases is this. Greeshma is a selfish, cunning woman, but not politically powerful, or involved in corruption facilitated by state government. Since she is not supported by corrupt political powers, it is easier to collect evidence against her and give justice to Sharon, which Kerala Police had no major challenge in doing. It is a bunch of mature minds vs one young common woman's criminal mind. she is bound to lose. And she should, for what she did. In R.G.Kar case, the killers are fellow medical interns involved in state government-facilitated medical corruption, which the doctor girl came to know about, and became a threat to those interns and the powers behind them. Here the State government and the police themselves are on the sides of the culprits. I think, later the centre-backed CBI also couldn't do much because of lack of evidence which were efficiently erased by corrupt Kolkata police officials, right after the incident. Thus, if Sanjay Roy (the scapegoat) is put to death, the last hope of truth getting out will also be lost, and the powers behind this crime will feel relief.
