A note for those people commenting about the Wachowski brothers: Stop misconstruing my words; Bound is a good film but it's still very much a male product which has themes of exploitation and is adult film-esque. It stands out with it's happy ending for a lesbian couple in this period in the same way that Being John Malkovich stands out with its happy ending for a lesbian couple - another film directed by a man - and it has nothing to do with the fact that the Wachowski brothers think that performing femininity and having cosmetic surgery = being a woman. Furthermore, the Wachowski brothers stole the work of a Black woman (Sophia Stewart) for The Matrix and never credited her for it, so who knows how much of Bound is their own original work anyway.

If the Wachowskis sisters stole the matrix from a black woman, they should be criticized for that, but two wrongs do not make a right. You don’t get to misgender someone just because they did something wrong.

I don't think it's possible to misconstrue continued and intentional misgendering and an exclusionary partial view of queer history. Wish you would have stated your views with your full chest in your video. It would have saved a lot of viewers some time. I feel a bit stupid and naive to have flipped over backwards extending you the benefit of the doubt. I hope one day you will feel safe enough to expand your worldview and join the full alphabet to help strengthen the true spectrum of queer solidarity.

40:05 As a Swede, Show Me Love is just the biggest cult classic here and I love it really much. I guess it's better when you know the language, as it is very quotable and is a GREAT portrayal of how teenagers in small Swedish town act and think, especially in the 90s. Also, the swedish title is "Fucking Åmål" and that title alone is just more interesting than "show me love" x) I myself never really focused on the fact that there was a male director - but he's one of the biggest coming-of-age film directors here and this movie really wrote history over here. Then again, I understand how it sounds a bit weird with a male director making a lesbian film...

Yes thank you, I was just about to comment on this. I agree that as a Swede it probably has more meaning because it was one of the few lesbian/sapphic representations that we saw at the time, at least for my part. It's considered groundbreaking over here. I don't see the movie as exploiting lesbians, at least not as much as a lot of English/American movies. Maybe because the actors were actual teenagers and it was more about their relationship and their struggles as teenagers than making exploiting scenes. Sure, the movie has it's flaws, yes it was directed by a man and therefor has 'the male gaze', and watching it nowadays there are definitely cringe worthy scenes. But it still tells a credible story about growing up in a small town in the 90s and it has meant a lot for queer young people in Sweden.

I'm American and I was kind of surprised at the flack she was giving this. Obviously, as a foreign film, it wasn't that easy to see. I knew nothing about who made it. All I had was viewing the film. I preferred F*king Amal to All Over Me, as much as musician Keisha was adorable. I watched this movie more than once, but I don't recall the adult male lens. It felt more hopeful than other teen lesbians with dudes in the way and unhappy endings. What I recall is the actresses had the gazing into each other eyes things down, good chemistry and it was hopeful. It was definitely in the short list of films worth watching. I'm less sensitive to lesbian exploitation, but that just wasn't my take away. It's been a while since I've seen it. I don't want a no build up, badly written explicit waste like some het rep (which in the name of equality, I forget what it was , but there's had been a lesbian couple like that in film, which I mean at least it wasn't a double standard in that series 🤣.) I'll definitely take a little exploitation over fridged or hair brushing, , you know.

Thinking about me as a kid sneaking downstairs when I knew Go Fish would be playing and heard from someone it was a lesbian film, at the time I had to pretend to be disgusted. I watched the entire movie that night until the last scene. The first kiss changed me. I think it was a school night and I woke up so tired the next day. 😂

Same! Well one of the first once I truly knew I was gay. Film wise the first was Imagine Me and You because my cousins accidentally bought it thinking it was a straight romcom. Watching it together was awkward for me as I wasn't out and still connecting the dots on things. I was aware I reacted differently to women and probably came out a year or two later. Bad Girls and Xena were first TV wise. As well as the cut straightwashed version of Sailor Moon. But I'm a cheerleader was my first lesbian film though. Natasha Lyonne is an icon. That and D.E.B.S. I remember finding them through the first emerging not so legal streaming sites and also on KZbin. The picture quality wasn't great either. I wasn't out yet and the content I looked at really helped in that in between for sure.

Great episode! As a bisexual boy, I remember the lesbian media being hugely impactful to me. Being 10 in 1995 and figuring myself out towards the end of the 90s, as a tomgirl I was heavily into Grunge/Riot Grrrl/Post-Grunge music and artists like Sarah McLachlan, Alanis, etc. while consuming shows such as Roseanne, Sailor Moon, Xena, and Buffy. In a lot of ways, the media helped "normalize" alternative sexuality to me as a kid and pre-teen in the face of guarded/negative real-world issues towards the subject.

Born in 81, the 90s and early aughts were obviously defining times for me. As a teen, to a young adult, as a female and obviously, as a lesbian trying to make peace with my orientation while going through comphet and being terrified of coming out. Media representation, like pretty much everyone else in the closet at the time, was truly that breathe of oxygen, that rush of excitement and the hope that "I'll be happily gay too one day". Even films that weren't exactly targeting my profile (say an older, racially different pairing for example) felt like I was being seen and allowed to have a presence in stories also. At first I was going to say "where is Willow 🥺" but although Tara was technically introduced in the 90s (at the very end of it, december of 99) they were a staple of the early 2000s. Can't wait to see you touch upon this era, with Buffy, TLW, QAF, Sugar Rush, South of Nowhere etc, all the gay culling tropes, family storylines and the emergence of online communities around this type of media and lesbianism in general. 2000-2015 is probably my fave period. So much has changed. Good and bad. But one thing I miss big time is the genuine fun and excitement around episodes/film releases, watch parties and a feeling of belonging. Really enjoyed this longer and more developed format 😊

Wow, In the 70's and 80's we have to hide in the bars always fearing that the bar was not raid. In the 90's I can remember the lines of women in the theaters that offer those films in Chicago, it was refreshing to see part of our world in the big screen. The issue of Helen Degeneres in Time was read by all of us and nobody missed the weekly episode of Xena warrior princess. Now is much easier for a lesbian to come out, but it is always good to have our history present. Thank you very much for bringing our history back. Your friend in Key West Ingrid Holm

Thanks so much for doing a deep dive into this. I think there were a lot of things, both good and bad that came from growing up in the 90s. I got to see Ellen, yes... but BOTH sides of it, including how much her career suffered from it. It certainly impacted a lot of my deep rooted internalized homophobia, and lead to me desperately trying to cling to this idea I was bi.

Great video! I was born in the 90s so my teens and my coming out happened in the early 2000s. I consumed all lesbian media I could get my hands on and a huge portion of that was of course from the 90s. "Show me love" was an amazing movie. I also loved "Kommt Mausi raus" which is a german movie and one of the sweetest coming out stories ever. It was a weird time, I was heavily bullied and even physically assaulted for my same sex attraction, my lesbian teacher had to hide her sexuality... but we still had this sense of optimism that things would get better someday. And things definitely got better but considering how overly progressive this current decade pretends to be, there is still a lot of work to do. It's frustrating that same sex marriage is finally allowed in my country but lesbian couples with kids still struggle to get the non-biological mom recognized as a parent (while this is entirely possible with a male partner who isn't the biological father). There is still lots of homophobia from the right and many homophobes who were at the center of the political spectrum in the 90s (when homophobia was a common everyday thing) have since remarketed their homophobia as "woke" and part of liberal gender theory. As a teen my only refuge were groups for homosexual and bisexual people, now many of these spaces feel hostile. I think we need to recognize the huge things that were already achieved while still being aware of what we still have to fight for. Strangely, I am less optimistic now but maybe that's an age thing. Seeing this video was definitely encouraging and reminded me that there is so much worth fighting for and that it's always worth it to keep fighting.

The "Cicely" episode of the quirky "Northern Exposure" series aired on US TV in 1992. About the lesbian Founding Mothers of the Alaskan frontier town of Cicely circa 1900. Credible performance by Jo Anderson as the butch Roslyn, which was rare. Both Roslyn and Cicely are depicted as devoted to each other and heroic figures. A lot of dry humor as the show's cast doubles as their ancestors in the 1900 segments. Doesn't meet all the demands we'd have today but it was a step forward at the time.

Great episode, thank you very much :). I was teen in the 90s. And because there was democratic revolution in my country in 1989, I had access to internet at the university in the 90s. I saw almost everything you speak of. Most iconic was Xena, Sailor Moon, Utena, Buffy, Queer as Folk (US) and movies (1. Desert Hearts, 2. The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love, 3) Fried Green Tomatoes, 4) Bound and so on). And when I found The L Word I was in Haven. It was so much as our group of lesbians in Prague at that time. And if I watch TV today so much has changed. So many TV series with great lesbian characters (Lost Girl, Legends of Tommorow, The Vigil, Gentleman Jack, Station 19 and many more. I am so happy for future. And because I am a big trekkie I need to mention, that in two ST series now are two lesbian couples and part of one of those pairs is Seven - finaly ;). Sorry for long post.

While I can see why you might leave Willow&Tara for an Aughts video, for the record, "Hush" (the debut of the 'ship) squeaked into the 90s on 14 December, 1999. [Of course, some people would consider the Year 2000 to be part of the 90s too, but that's a whole different discussion!] That Willow would, ahem, Turn Gay, was heavily hinted at the previous season of BTVS, "Doppelgangland", 23 February 1999.

It feels very much like being a lesbian didn't help. For some of the stuff, it isn't unusual in the industry at all and plenty of men, as guilty escaped notice. Honestly, I'm not even sure how what Ellen Degeneres not giving the either a PR perfect nor desired public response of guilty until proven innocent, makes her any worse than proven creeps that Meryl Streep, for example, publicly supported. I know it's an unpopular opinion, but Johnny Depp didn't exonerate himself in my eyes and the way some of the actresses supporting him disgust me. For the more wild libel style accusations, she's certainly not faced any actual investigation or charges, so it reads like enemies or haters taking advantage. Makes sense why fight at that point, which will just encourage worse, just retire and continue living well.

Another British tv show from the 90s that had lesbian representation is "Band of Gold" (1995-1997). It's about four former sex workers trying to build new lives for themselves after having been released from jail. The lesbian storyline runs through all of season 2 and I'm sure there were lesbians involved in the writing, as it's quite nuanced, the two queer characters are fully fleshed and their relationship - though it ends rather tragically - is shown as something positive among the precariousness and traumas that define other parts of their lives. It really feels like "Bad Girls" in that respect: the fact that these shows focused on a "deviant" and already otherized section of the population whom the audience was not expected to identify with (sex workers, prison inmates) opened a space for (queer) writers to explore queerness rather freely. After all, these shows could not be said to endorse crime or sex work, so they could not be assumed to endorse homosexuality, right? I mean, that's how I imagine the writers got away with it. Also, playing the two queers in question are a young Lena Headey and even younger Samantha Morton, both at the very beginning of their carreer. And they're so good! (it was apparently Samantha Morton's big break) Couldn't find a clip; but here is a fanvid that shows a lot of their relationship: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jn3InIqahKaqadk At least some of the episodes of season 2 are on YT (maybe all of them, I haven't checked) kzbin.info/www/bejne/raS7fWRqjtaoZpI

The joke was..."it's Sweeps, ladies, pucker up." This is an actual quote from an entertainment news article chronicling the practice at the time of including a girl on girl kiss to goose the ratings. "Sweeps" week is when networks tried to attract as large an audience as possible in order to set ad rates with the advertisers. ETA: I'd have to check the air date, but an earlier girl on girl kiss strictly (more or less) for comedic purposes was on "Laverne & Shirley," believe it or not. The series ran for a long time, beginning in the '70s, but still pretty sure this would have pre-dated the kiss on "21 Jump St." The L&S ep. was one where Laverne has to land a plane after the pilot has been knocked out due to some slapstick shenanigans and Shirley, becoming theatrical about their possible demise, suddenly grabs L and plants a big old smooch smack right on her lips to which L replies, "We'll have to talk about that later, Shirl."

The show suffered when the Herc production team took over in season 5 (a largely lost and wasted season after the extraordinary brilliance of its opener "Fallen Angel") and seemed intent on using every unfilmed leftover buddy-buddy Herc script barely retailored to fit X&G and also to downplay the precious Subtext. Those producers were fired and Season 6 was better, but the damage had been done and the show ended very sadly. Tragically, in fact. The narration text of the video says they "even got married"...um...I don't think so, unless my memory has gotten 'that' bloody poor. Not on the series. Yes, they were certainly married in all of the wonderful 'uber' and Subtext fanfic which was main text such as that of Melissa Good--who also, discovered online by her XWP fanfic novels, wrote episodes of the actual series itself. One of which ("Last Chance") was supposed to be an actual wedding of the poetess Sappho and her lover played as doubles by Lucy and Renee, a musical episode which never got made because of the lame excuse that they couldn't get the rights to the songs they wanted to use. But that seemed to have morphed into a totally different ep. with pop songs. Suspiciously, they had no problems getting those song rights, even to the Beatles tune "We Can Work it Out." Alas, I'm sure it was really vetoed by the studio once again.

Xena was the best bisexual icon I ever seen, as Lucky Lawless said and confirmed [ Now it wasn't just that Xena was bisexual and kinda liked her gal pal and they kind of fooled around sometimes, it was 'Nope, they're married ] Other bisexual characters these aren’t as deep as her in my opinion, sure there are some good but it so much, Xena was and still is the top.

re: bound. the Wachowskis going on to both becoming trans women later in life, goes some way into explaining how as male (presenting, at the time) directors had a better vision for female characters. I LOL'd at the comments "sometimes I read them, sometimes I dont" 🎵😂

Still male. They just changed looks, not reorganized their DNA. Let's not praise dudes doing womanface writing lesbians just because they went dress go spinny and demand new pronouns. They never were and never will be women, let alone lesbians nor understand what it feels to be one and to love another.

nah, they are just males with a p0rn fetish. they said it themselves that porn turned them trans. lesbians are same sex attracted women. that's why gay marriage was banned bc it was same sex marriage. meanwhile same gender identity couples can still get married in conservative countries. a bepenised person can't be a lesbian

I was enjoying this video a lot (was a teenager in the 90s so I have extremely vivid memories of everything you mentioned since, as a queer woman, I was always searching for WLW media wherever I could.) However, it was extremely disappointing to see you misgendering the Wachowski sisters. Whether or not this was an "accident" on your part, I don't know. But I did find it odd since you seem well-versed on general pop culture (in addition to the Wachowskis' fame). 😐

I've enjoyed the videos of yours that I've watched and appreciate the info on film and media history. An obscure film you might find interesting is "The Sticky Fingers of Time", a shoestring-budget SF production featuring time-traveling lesbians. That being said, I'm very disappointed to see your transphobic comments about the Wachowskis. Do better! I will be unsubbing ASAP.

I'll clarify. The issue I had with the original comment was the veiled transphobia. And also the pandering to conservatives. As a Lesbian, I really don't see the point in bellyaching about the more accurate definition of "Non-men who love non-men". It's not a set of rules that YOU MUST FOLLOW in order to be a lesbian. Nobody is being forced to date nonbinary or trans lesbians. Much of our history is in our butch/gender-non-conforming predecessors and I am extremely aware that we would be nothing without them. We are strong together. Also the mocking of progressives? Is it their first day on the planet? Why else would someone act so against their own interest?

In the 90s no one i know had an issue with any form of homosexual or bi sexual hook ups i think this is mainly due to the fact no one was really shoving it down peoples throat as opposed more so to nowadays where it seems to be forced as though it's being shoved in every show often by altering much loved Characters like how they altered Velma Dinkley by making her black & I believe making Daphne a lesbian instead of creating a new original character & placing them on the show. This in my view is why alot of people speak out now

Did you not watch the video? She just covered how careers were risked and bomb threats were sent out back then due to many people always having issues w/ gay representation. Literally the same old argument of such content being shoved down viewers' throats. Amber Benson got so much hate for playing Willow Rosenberg's (who many complained was altered from being a straight woman to a lesbian) new lover. To this day, there are people who still don't believe that Xena & Gabrielle were ever a couple, claiming that their relationship is just being retconned today.
