The Deck is Almost Done and It's AMAZING - Off Grid in Portugal

My parents are still here on my homestead in Central Portugal working hard along with their friends George, Lisa, and Dennis. The amount of work we've all got done is pretty remarkable and you'll see big changes in this video. The biggest change of all... the deck is well underway and it's completely transformed the space by my splash pool! It's really wonderful and I can't wait to share the progress!
A big thanks to everyone for all of your hard work on the deck, the garden, the front of the house, and on the land. It's been a huge help and I'm so lucky to have such amazing support!

What a difference that deck makes and yes you are blessed to have such loving parents to give you a hand when needed. And their friends also many hands make light work. The garden is starting to take shape and once finished will look amazing and let’s hope you get a lots of produce from them . Nothing tastes better then home grown fruit and veggies from our gardens.

You're so lucky to have the help from your parents & their friends, they really got stuck in. It's a relentless continuous battle in the garden as you want stuff to grow but everything else you don't want grows too & if you can't keep on top of it it's never going to change. Think you need a live in garden help!! The window kept tantalisingly appearing without the tarp over it, apart from the shower the window is what I'm looking forward to seeing completed. Enjoyed the video.

I'm hoping the sawdust and black stuff will keep the weeds under control which will be a massive help and I'll try to add irrigation too to free up time. I do love the garden but it's a big time suck, for sure! I'm starting back up on the building projects soon, it's too hard to do them when we're all working outside on things.

Oh I'm just impatient to see you with some home comforts Kirsty, you work so hard on so many things & it'll be bliss when at last the house is comfortable. I just love watching Your parents slaving away working so hard and making your garden area and around your home look so awesome. Will you please cover up that black ground cover in front of your door and down the walk path with the gravel rocks that you have to make all that area in front look complete. I hope you can keep the garden looking awesome. Yes you need a medium to big greenhouse down on that terrace . Is the tool shed , just for tools or are you making a workshop / tool shed or is it going to be a fire wood shed? If it's a workshop / tool shed it looks like it will be too small for that use. Plus that area should be for entertaining purposes , A table for 6 or 8 , hang up some string night lights, comfortable seating, and a bar area.maybe a small fire pit. Lay stones for walking paths from your front door and from the driveway up to that area. You really do have an awesome place. You could do a lot of stuff on your land. Your parents need to move to Portugal close to you. I can tell that your parents spoils you... lol.. They are so special. Have a wonderful week.

11:37 My dads the same. You have to make them think your ideas are their ideas. 😉 Did you manage to finish the cement floor inside the tank? Hopefully the get textile and straw will help your new garden beds and walkways stay weed free. This way you won’t have to dig up weeds again.

Haha, is that the trick? 😁 I did some of the floor and then it rained... I'll give a full tour of the deck soon. My minimum requirement was plugging up the worst of the holes and I think that worked, the tank holds way more water than before.

Looking good that geo fabric is great you will notice a big difference I laid it under my raised vegetable beds two years ago as I was sick of the grass taking over. I also laid it under the wood of the raised beds on my pathways so the grass could not sneak under the raised beds . It drains really well and I have not had long runners creeping through. I laid small chipped wood on top of paths. Now only food growing no more hard work for this senior

Life is good. I loved the food in Portugal. While in Madera I was introduced to scabbard fish Piexe Espada and it is probably for sale and on restaurant menus in Portugal. It is one of the most delicious fish.

Your family/friends did a nice job tidying up your place. What hard workers! Deck looks good too. Question, why is the deck not squared up with the water container on the far right corner? It looks like it was deliberately designed that way. Is it because of the weird angles of the water basin make it hard to match? Or are there steps being added? My construction knowledge is limited so just trying to understand your dad’s and your vision for that particular corner. ps I’m loving your bravery to just go for it and have fun along the way. Yea my parents are amazing and the community here is wonderful, too. 🙂 Yep the deck was deliberately designed that way due to the weird angles of the tank. It would have been very tricky to build it to the angles so he deduced to make it square and I’ll do stone work to make it less obvious.

At the moment it's actually the overflow pipe that's dripping there and making a puddle. I need to go to town to get some pipe of the right size to finish that off. I suspect the tank is still leaking a little bit but nowhere near as much as before.

OMG I’m so happy you’re going to get another Polly tunnel down where you can use it better with your garden and use the one up the top for your tools/timber etc. that way you will be able to clear the timber from inside your home. So happy for you.

Was that Canadian bacon on the pizza? Or do you just call it bacon? All your meals out looked delicious. The deck is awesome and so clever to have an access hatch as part of the pattern. When you buried the pipe, could you mark where all the connections are? So if you wanted to check a leak or add on, they’d be easy to find.

I'm not sure! I think Canadian bacon is something else and I've never eaten it in Canada... I think I've only ever had it in the US. 😁 I probably should have marked the connections but I guess I can look back at the videos and guess!

Omg how full are those wine glasses. If we get a glass of wine they only fill it to the mark line which is almost half full.
