He won no tournaments. This is a decline. But even the basic text acknowledges he had a solid year, and one might argue the decline is relative - there are other players who are simply better.

How is dropping from 3 to 5 and not winning a single tournament in a year not a decline? It isn't a catastrophic decline, and like most analysis, this video is speculation, fuzzy thinking, and hot air. But objectively calling it a decline is correct.
@Leejungwoo482 ай бұрын
@@zweigackroyd7301 I see your reasoning. But it's more of a subjective subtle thing for now. A tournament or title win only speaks to how well a player did in one tournament in a week or two. Where as top 5 ranking means he's still pretty consistently good. There is probably a lack of growth for sure in him. But if he falls out of the top 20 and continues to lose in early rounds to weaker opponents say outside of the top 30 then it would be more of a cement case that he's definitely declined (like Felix Auger or Denis Shapo).
@zweigackroyd73012 ай бұрын
@@Leejungwoo48 I fully agree that his "decline" is fairly meaningless, but people read immense meaning into small, statistically expected variations. These same people remember the cases where they say player X is "done" and it turns out that way, but they forget when they say it and it turns out not to be true. Add to that the absurd criticism of some of these top players - I recently had an exchange with a guy insisting that Ruud has a mediocre backhand. What he meant was this wasn't his big weapon. Predicting a decline for any player is a good bet, because they all do eventually, and when you aren't specific about what that means (time frame, how much, etc), you can blow hot air or generate clicks from people who are outraged. If you look around in the world, most people spend a lot of time making predictions about the future (think the news), and most of them are usually wrong or so vague as to be meaningless.

I still think he’s been at worst the 6th best player in the world this year. 1. Sinner 2. Alcaraz 3. Zverev 4. Djoker 5. Meddy 6. Fritz Could see Fritz above him based on the last couple of months, but still have him marginally ahead for now.
@mosab.28152 ай бұрын
The reason is the emergence of two players who are not like the rest of the players, and here I mean Sener and Alcaraz, who are the project of two legends, and Medvedev’s style does not work with Sener and Alcaraz.

Nothing very much happened. Daniil has simply passed his brief prime. It's not the rise of Jannik and Carlitos. Daniil in his prime could beat Djoko in top form and in the US Open final with flawless tennis, mentally as well as tactically and technically. He is far below that level now. He may return to it some day, but even so it will be for a very short time - if it happens at all.

He was never that special. A classic pusher who beats opponents by outlasting them. He can't do that consistently against Alcaraz and Sinner who are young, fit and strong and in their prime, and are actually outlasting him instead and punching him off the court. He was lucky Golkovic over-exerted himself in 2021 when he went to that Olympics and then reached the Us Open final exhausted, otherwise he wouldn't win any slams. In the prime Goldkovic era from 2011 to 2017, he would probably win nothing. Maybe he could snatch a few masters in the Mr 40:15 and Weakdal era, from 2003 until 2011 😂

He's not a fucking pusher - he's at his best when he's taking risks and painting the lines (as he did vs. Djokovic for his Slam win), and he knows this for the exact reason you cited, he knows he can't lock in and defend for long periods against the likes of Djoker, Sinner and Alcaraz. His fortunes turn on how dialled in his serves and winners are.
@jokelot52212 ай бұрын
@@biscobisco1882 His approach to tennis is wrong. His technique is not good. And now, his mentality is also wrong. He is to one dimensional, far to much. And he hired Simon as his coach, a player that is literally a smaller version of himself. Its the same mistake Djokovic did when he hired Agassi, that is basically a similar thing. He should have hired someone that can teach him some attacking tennis, to develop him some weapon apart from that first serve, that is in my opinion just slightly above average, and he rarely does any variations with it. Also because of his limitations on his forehand technique, he is often forced to take some non-sensical decisions and often loses points that he should have won. Dont get me wrong, he is an incredible athlete for his height, in a way a freak, he has incredible endurance, but he wastes so much energy for being unable to generate appropriate offense. And what he does does not work what so ever against the elite players like Sinner, Alcaraz and Goldkovic when he is rested and motivated, in the important matches. They figured him out, and have a mental edge over him, which further sends him to the abyss. Im just honest, he is a very good player, he had a great potential, but he learn to play tennis the wrong way.

"He was never that special" proves u didnt rly watch him with open eyes, and untalented guy who raw-dogged his way in top 5 by being smart player. Its hard to evolve with injury. Looking back oh his stats its clear that injury effects his forehand and his serve, especially serve. He is genius on court.
@jokelot52212 ай бұрын
@@VladaBB "Genius on court", perhaps for players outside of top 100. For the elite, not really. Im not saying he is not talented or that he cant play tennis, but he is very limited and one dimensional, which is costing him of being more successful. Not that i care, but i think he should have had a different approach to tennis, for his own sake. He can, when focused be very tough to beat, but he gets into a mindset of opportunist to much, pushing way to much for his opppnents to fall appart, he is not going for his wins, and its costing him dearly against a young, quality opposition. There is a fine balance between offense and defense, and Medvedev is unable or unwiling finding that ballance.
