Words can’t describe how much I miss going to fuddruckers as a kid, smelling the fresh buns when you walked in, playing the arcade games with friends, saving room for dessert and getting one of the brownies. Those times were the best.

Im a fan, we have one 3 miles away from my apartment. It’s always been a good experience there and honestly I had no idea they were in trouble. I think another thing that this video didn’t mention is Five Guys. they are a huge competitor and it’s likely many people pick FG over Fuddruckers just due to familiarity.

Anyone saying the Fuddruckers is a good burger place either 1, has an INSANELY good running Fuddruckers near them or 2, doesnt know shit about burgers. I lean more towards for latter. Fuddruckers isnt a bad burger, but places like In-N-Out, The Habit, Shake Shack, Five Guys and Whataburger blow them out of the water. There are just too many better options for burgers these days.

Fuddruckers made awesome burgers. Their steak fries with cheese sauce and ketchup were next to Godliness. The buns were fluffy yet durable for the weight of a 1 lb slab of beef. Seeing Fuddruckers close stores in North Austin felt like an end of an era 😭

@jakeroon

In a world of ever increasing inflation and shrinking middle class, it's tough to run a concept that is billed as a premium product with a price to match. If you do go in for such an option you have to realize you are going to be marketing to a more upscale niche clientele and make the appropriate choices. They didn't. In stead of trying to convince the ppl who could afford their burgers regularly to come often and provide an upscale experience: they tried to convince average Joe he could afford it and to bring the kids! The problem is average Joe can't afford to do that but once every three months. The market they should have been aiming for was the same folks that shop at whole foods. They also franchised near shopping malls etc, instead of upscale areas where you might find a whole foods, or cheesecake factory. overall, just very bad realization of concept. Imagine if Fudruckers had marketed themselves in a similar was as apple computers inc did. IBM is for broke boring ppl, you are upscale and cool , you need an Apple.

@jakeroon

@@sdgc8667 What does anything I said have to do with current events or politics? I was speaking of what happened in the past. "...of EVER increasing inflation and shrinking middle class..." . That's been a thing since the turn of the century, not just today. It's a consequence of our shift off the silver standard in 1889 and into to fiat banking with the emergency acts of 1933. The last biggest hit which facilitated the trouble with Fuddruckers was the recession of 2008. Now don't you feel sheepish for trying to insert current modern politics into the conversation? Seems you are the one who has it on the mind.

The higher grade stuff started really drying off during the 2010s. Arby's lacked a value menu, and was getting hammers during this era too. I saw tons of Arby's locations close up near me. You needed to operate low to the ground to survive and anything that doesn't follow this thought process took major losses.
@jakeroon
@jakeroon 8 ай бұрын
@@Lastjustice Yeah after the 2008 recession really started to hit, if you didn't have extremely good value (dollar menu etc) it was rough to have a huge amount of locations all over. If you wanted to go higher end you needed to run lean and trim your locations back to just the golf course areas.

There was a single Fuddruckers near me growing up. Me and my Dad used to go there every time we passed it because we loved it so much. After his battle with cancer and his passing I used to go there alone because of all the amazing memories and of course the god tier burgers and fries. The day it shut down was quite sad, felt like a part of my childhood and time with my Dad was being destroyed. This place was incredibly underrated.

I think it’s the lone one in Canada and am surprised this guy doesn’t mention it. Maybe it’s because it’s owner is separate from these other companies which is the namesake of golf’s carwash. My parents and I would go to Fuddruckers every other Friday night when I was growing up in the mid 90's- early 00's. I'll never forget the time my dad asked for "the biggest burger you have cause I'm REAL HUNGRY" and they took about twice as long to get our food ready. When they called his name and we went to the counter to grab it, they'd only charged him for a 1/3 pound but that thing was literally as big as a pizza. I'm not kidding, he had to slice it up like a pizza and everyone working behind the counter was losing it laughing at their prank. Other diners were so confused and coming by our table to see it. Super wholesome and I think it took him a couple days to get through the whole thing! 😂

As someone who has lived in San Antonio all his life, Luby's is a sad restaurant, with both a very old clientele and employees. They partners with HEB (how have you not made a video about them yet??) to sell some of their more popular items as frozen foods, most notably their almond encrusted fish, but at a high price it was basically DOA. Really interesting case study about the death of a restaurant due to the failure to modernize.

My local Fuddruckers originally had a glass window, displaying an entire side of beef hanging in a meat locker. We would watch butchers carve out pieces of the beef and freshly hand-grind them, then hand forming each one pound burger patty in 1982. The buns were baked in-house. The produce looked like they came straight from the harvesting farm. It was delicious and amazing I got to experience this process from start to finish. Even though In N Out and Wendy's kinda comes close - I still have never seen such scratch made freshness since.

Much as I'd like Fuddruckers to make a comeback, I think it's fair to say that Five Guys took over their position as the "upscale burger" place quite a while ago. The only way they're going to claw any of that territory back is to really undercut Five Guys on price, and that usually doesn't end well for specialty restaurants.

Five Guys is disgusting. Easily the worst burgers I've ever had (not counting McDonald's or BK) I dont get the hype. They're mediocre and overpriced. I walked out spending close to $20 maybe a $22 on a burger fries and a large drink. Fuckin ripoff
@NorthStarBlue1
@NorthStarBlue1 7 ай бұрын
@@hulkfan97 Just like every other chain restaurant over the last decade or so, their quality kinda went down as the cost of ingredients went up. And as I mentioned, being a specialty place that only really does one thing, they're never going to get the volumes of traffic that McD's or BK gets so that just makes the price creep even worse. Honestly i feel like Five Guys is starting to fall into its "Oops, we overexpanded during the good times" phase. They might end up in the same positions as Fuddrucker's before the decade is out.

Fuddruckers has historically been my absolute favorite restaurant. They truly did have the best burgers in the entire state, by far, and their cafetera bars were unique and the best anywhere. Everytime I have a birthday, I choose would usually choose to spend it at fuddruckers. They atmosphere, decorations, and booths they provide are also without compare in how awesome they were. But I haven't gone since the pandemic, since they had to shut down all their cafeteria stuff, including the salad bar and the toppings bar. The pandemic destroyed them. I hear they were able to reopen all that once the measures were over, but the change in ownership concerns me now. I hope they remain as good as they used to be.

I was an assistant manager at a Fuddruckers from 2016-2020... the covid panic killed us. We went from doing 4 grand that Sunday to doing $700 on Monday and each day after was just like that. It was already a thin margin but not even doing 1k every day just ruined it. Fudd's was the most fun job I ever had. The management team was great, we all got along and we had a good crew. It's a shame as the place was mostly well-liked and any time I tell people I worked there, they always reminisce about how good and fun the place was. Now the building sits empty and pretty much abandoned. At least I have my memories.

Yeah, but they got so expensive. You can read my comment above. I can't spend $15 bucks for my own burger. Then, I've got to think of wife & mother too. They charged too much. As I said above ... I really liked Fuddruckers, but they got to be TOO EXPENSIVE. I don't want to pay $15 bucks for a stupid burger. So, we only went on nights where they had a free kid's meal, if you got a big burger. So my wife got the kid's meal, and I ate the big burger. And, I haven't even thought of going back -- after COVID. It's just impossible to pay the prices everyone wants to charge now. Just easier to learn to cook it yourself. I don't want to buy the drinks, fries on side (which wife likes), then I gotta buy onion rings (which I like) separately), then buy two drinks at $3 each, and then a tip. Add all of that together, and it's quite a pretty penny for a so-so, or nice but not perfect burger. Easier to watch youtube and download Fuddrucker's Copycats online. If they had more meal-deals, sure, but don't care to go anymore. I'm a better cook because of Covid.

While I hear your argument (mostly because you've copied and pasted it onto multiple replies to this video), that's on you. You say, "Fuddruckers became too expensive." To you maybe, but $15 bucks for a good burger, hanging out with my friends, maybe having a beer - that's just the price of a good time to me. If money is that tight, don't go out to eat. If you have to make your wife order a kids meal just so you both can eat at a burger joint, jeez, your life sucks and spending $15 per person is the least of your worries.

Growing up, I really took Fuddruckers for granted. I enjoyed it, but I wasn't crazy about any burgers. In my 20s I really started enjoying gourmet hamburgers, and overall looked down on Fuddruckers with its kitschy rock and roll decor and pandering to families. They also didn't have many of the wildly creative burgers I enjoyed finding at other restaurants and food trucks. Then one day, I went again with my cousin and her young family. I re-discovered that Fuddrucker's patty and bun were truly fresher than a way more expensive burger! Sure the creativity and out of the box ingredients weren't present, but the core of a wonderful burger was represented marvelously! Add the toppings bar to that, and you have a gourmet burger experience for at least $5 less. That fresh ground beef and fresh baked bun really make a difference! Sadly, the pandemic closed the location closest to me and my Fuddruckers Renaissance ended prematurely.

My best friend and I would treat ourselves to it every now and then, kinda became a staple spot to eat at from time to time. Then the pandemic hit and obviously I paid it no attention in recent years. My best friend passed away in 2020 so he never reminded me to see how the place was doing. Now I just bought a house literally right down the street from the place and the building is still there, it still looks like it could be a functioning building and the sign outside the building is only half lit at night, but there are never any cars in the parking lot. It’s clear that this location has closed down, and it’s a shame because it used to be my best friends and I’s special treat on occasion. @@SimuLord As someone who really liked the Fuddruckers burgers, I do remember having the quarter-pound version once (Portland area). The bun kind of overwhelmed that burger, even if it was slightly smaller than the half pound version. And that’s where I think you’re right… mostly. I think those of us who liked Fuddruckers kind of fall between the old school (a lot of whom fondly recall a bag of burgers at 19¢ a pop) and those who understand a somewhat bigger patty but something cooked slower and with better toppings (fast caz with more deference to other things on the menu) and we in the middle aren’t that big a population. And, worst of all, if you’re changing tactics to appeal to kids using half-pound hamburgers, the parents with the actual money will eventually vote that down. Never mind the somewhat shrinking youth population in this country. Easy to see the demographic trends I cited being the larger problem.

Fuddrucker's was a place I'd go to time-to-time in the early/mid 90s as a mid 20 something. I am not sure how many locations there were in my city (I'm almost positive there was more than one, but I was only familiar with one of them) and I also can't quite recall when they folded up---it couldn't have been any later than the company bankruptcy in 2010. Without a doubt, the burgers were at least on par with any burger you'd get in a casual dining restaurant of the day, and miles beyond anything you'd get in a fast food joint. Random comment: When I was a kid, I had a weirdly incorrect idea about cafeteria style restaurants like Luby's (or Morrison's, or Piccadilly, etc). They always seemed to me to be a strange artifact of the first half of the 20th century, like automats or something. Mostly, I think, because 99% of the people I saw eating there were people 70 years old and up---I assumed this was because they liked the style of food or service---even though I thought it was strange for adults to voluntarily eat what appeared to be grocery store quality food in a place that looked like a slightly spruced-up version of the lunchroom at my elementary school. I now know it was probably more a financial choice for people on fixed incomes who also had the time in their mornings and afternoons to sit down for a meal in a restaurant (bingo, retirees).

The only one left in my area, the one she managed as it turns out, still kept up the same level of quality and customer base being inside a major department and furniture store, but the other few shut down in the 2010’s for some of the reasons highlighted here. I don’t know what the future holds for them, but I hope they’ll stick around for a while longer.

Our Fuddruckers has been abandoned since 2011. I think another popular local restaurant/bar is taking their place but its crazy how long that space was vacant. It was huge. EDIT: So I actually did some research and it closed in 2016. A year after the owners purchased the franchise in 2009 corporate went bankrupt and the company was sold again and their original franchise agreement was gone. They had big plans for the restaurant but it was just too risky at that point. They actually owned other restaurants in the area and they were nice enough to honor leftover Fuddruckers gift certificates at any of the other different restaurants they owned!

The only one I remember in the Chicago area was around the Lake St/I-290/I-355 interchange. That bitch been abandoned since like 2008 and the building has just been returning to nature. You can still tell it used to be a Fuddruckers, the signage is still up but is all sun bleached. Even though that area has seen a bit of revival that massive lot is still vacant and overgrown and the building is falling in on itself. It's been ready to be demolished for a decade now. Extra pickles, two red onions, I'm in heaven. But I can't forget their seasoned wedge fries either man. Top 3 fries out there. I've NEVER had a bad experience at Fuddruckers. Speaking as a millennial, I think focusing on the freshness is 100% key. I think that's a subtle key to Five Guys' success. But making the branding a smidge more modern and sleaker while keeping the southern family style vibe (here in Nashville we have a ton of places that crush using that). Maybe even having one more dynamic that seperates them and is more appealing to adults (since they have the money).

Some of my fondest memories were of my dad taking me to fuddruckers in Houston as a kid. Now years later, as a chef working in NYC I can see why. I loved the form and function of fudruckers. You would start with the ordering of specifically the meat, choosing your temp and etc.. and then assemble the toppings *yourself* with as much as you could need or want thus making it your worlds greatest hamburger. Seemed pretty efficient labor wise. Then you could go on to find a place to the theme of your choice, it was like walking into an applebees that had 10x the amount of decor. It was great for parties and stores tended to be decorated the same so you could always find your favorite booth/table in many different stores. All in all 19/10. Recently I have been a bit nostalgic and wanting to revisit - so thank you for your video!

Fudruckers in Florence, Kentucky closed due to mistakes by employees. It seems that the tea dispensers were cleaned with bleach and some of the bleach was left in the dispensers. A customer got tea to drink and when he consumed he immediately began having health problems. His kidneys shut down and he had to have a kidney transplant. Needless to say, that restaurant did not last long after that. I would assume that the customer sued and probably received a settlement, as he should have.

Probably not the "world's best hamburger", but for the price point and considering the toppings bar concept, it is absolutely the best you can get outside of the top end casual dining restaurants. And as a kid I absolutely loved putting as much cheese sauce on my fries as I wanted. I hadn't been to one since I was a kid until a couple years ago I found one in Virginia when I was working there, and sure enough it was just as good as I had remembered. It became a regular stop for lunch while I was working there and a way better value than going to some chain like Applebees, and definitely better quality than fast food. It sounds like mismanagement has been their issue as a company because it certainly isn't the food that is the problem. It would be a shame if Fuddrucker's disappeared.
