The Decline of Star vs the Forces of Evil Explained by Top Gear

As you do when you have a cold, I was rewatching Top Gear episodes and realized that the scene where Clarkson's Toyboata sinks reminded me of the decline in quality if a show I once really liked. Then this happened!
As is with all videos I make, this is for joke purposes and not to be taken seriously. If you still like Star or think it was a great show, that's great. This video is just for fun (though FR Amphibia's finale was way better)

shipping and romance isn't a bad thing, but star vs. really uh. showed how bad a show can be when you shift the focus from a magical princess learning to live life on earth and be responsible to a teen romance that even glee would ask to tone it down

I'm still hella creeped out about the episode where everyone who sees Marco and her baby sister assumes that it's his and Star's baby like they aren't fking children themselves. The writers really thought they were being funny there.

Mina Loveberry's treatment will always frustrate me. Here is this character that was described as being a "homage" to Sailor Moon, the main inspiration for the show, and yet she ends up being a joke, is shown in a flashback to have depth and ends up being blame as the sole reason for the Monster hate when Solaria was the most bloodthirsty and created Magic Mina. And don't forget how the show tended to portray humans as being the aggressive side when Eclipsa's husband burned an entire town and ate the King. Really the entire tone and theme shift came out of nowhere.

Star's mom declared she would eradicate any significantly large gathering of monsters she found and would kill any prominent monster leaders she could, and she got popular support for that policy. Monsters were shown to live nonviolent lives when they had a chance and didn't fall under the sway of any monster warlords who rose to power during times of war against humans. There was a lot that could have been said, but nope; Starco and killing magic for being "unequal" was more important

Mina loses Impact when she's taken out as a joke by Meteora, a character Star went toe to toe with and Eclipsa stomped. Meteora power scaling wise should be a non issue.

I just watched Amphibia for the first time, I haven't been this continuously sad after an ending since RDR2. Just the final minute plus the credits is enough to make me bawl. Gonna miss it so muchhhhhh. Owl House will probably do the same to me since I've been watching that for a while. I'm not ready to let go...

They really should've stuck to Jarco instead of trying to make Starco work in the most asinine and retcon-ny way. And they shouldn't have merged Earth and Mewni either. I'm glad Amphibia realized that was a bad idea and kept the two realms in its series separate at the end. Also, Milo Murphy's Law's Season 2 finale aired in the same weekend as Star Vs's series finale. It's much better, and Milo deserves a Season 3, dammit.

Yes, Milo Murphy's Law needs more recognition! I still liked the ending for SVTFOE but I can agree that it could've ended better as well. I think the only ships I liked were Tomstar and Globgor and Eclipsa. I only see Marco, Star and Janna as friends. And there needs to be more represented of platonic relationships because making kids think they need to be romantically involved with someone because they think that person is special, which could totally be platonic, isn't the best way to show relationships. Like, I've never really had crushes in my life, I just think someone's cool and interesting and I'd want to hang out with them, but if I watched Star and Marco, totally have best friend energy, when I was younger and saw that, I'd be tricking myself into thinking I was "in love" with someone who I saw as a great platonic pal.

I watched season 4 as it was airing and I can only describe the experience as that metaphor of the frog that is swimming in a pot with water and you slowly turn up the heat so it never realizes it reaches to the point where it's boiling to death

@@spyro2002 I didn't bother, I was kind of disinterested at this point and heard most things from others. Imagine how baffled I was when I encountered a Tumblr post from after "Here to Help" that stated it revealed Marco didn't actually love Jackie at all and actually was in love with Star the whole time... you know, which COMPLETELY CONTRADICTS with episodes from earlier seasons such as Season 2's "Naysaya" - which explicitly confirms that Jackie was Marco's true love at the time! God, the whole Starco scene was groan-inducing and was very clearly made this way because the writers wrote themselves in a corner and wanted Starco to happen SO badly that they were too damn stubborn to realize Starco couldn't work anymore at this point (not helping is the fact that their continuity coordinator for 3 and a half seasons is _long gone from the show_ at this point as well, as is the role for continuity coordinator in general!). And then there's "Cleaved". I was actually watching Milo Murphy's Law Season 2 instead of Star Season 4. Some people are pretty mixed on it because of Doofenshmirtz essentially becoming a secondary character in MML, but I thought Season 2 was pretty great! It basically confirmed Milanda in such great episodes like "Cake 'Splosion" and "Managing Murphy's Law", and MML in general just stuck to characters having only one love interest (e.g. Milo with Amanda, or Melissa with Zack) instead of making endless love triangles and love dramas. Also glad they didn't pair main characters Milo and Melissa together, something that SvtFoE did with Star and Marco (something I THOUGHT Star wouldn't do all the way back in Season 1). Cavendish and Dakota are also funny, and I personally found Doof pretty funny in MML too.

Using Top Gear as a meme template for a popular Disney TV show. Truly a man of culture. But let's face it, there should have been a crossover between the two: Top Gear Mewni Special. The legendary trio would change the kingdom for the better, without them even intending to. All they have to do drive for a few meters and every single character would have been astonished and wowed by their charisma and eventually work towards peace so that they can all enjoy more Top Gear.

I haven't watched the full show but SVTFOE should've done what TOH did (even though SVTFOE came before it). People say they focus too much on Lumity but IMO they know how to give us just the right amount of Lumity throughout the show instead of every episode being about Lumity when it still has a story to tell

No I totally disagree Both SVTFOE and TOH focus so much on romance to the point where it becomes unbearable for me to watch This is why Amphibia is one of my favorites cartoons of all time Shows where romance/shipping isn't the main focus is more enjoyable to watch than shows where they show romance in your face almost every episode

Yeah. With Star it felt like way too much shipping occurred where as in TOH it feels a lot more balanced. Plus lumity is a way better ship and also is a non toxic one while Starco was a nightmare that ruined the show.

@@SprigPlantar8934 it's ok that the romance bothered you, but Lumity isn't the focus point of the series. It can occasionally have a focus especially within certain episodes. But Lumity isn't the only thing going on within the show. The plot doesn't stop because of Lumity. I mean, there are only three episodes in total within Season 2B that focus on Lumity as a relationship within the episode A main plot. Even then, Amity and Luz as characters are explored outside of the romance too! Reaching Out is a good example of that. The rest of Season 2B has either Lumity as a subplot or just has small moments within an episode or Amity doesn't even show up at all. Like Luz sending hearts to Amity. But overall the show doesn't just focus on Lumity. The plot never stops throughout the show and even has episodes where Amity isn't even in many episodes for a period of time. Also, Amity and Luz don't even get together until the later part of Season 2A. Before that, Season 2A focused more on the family dynamics than anything else or by strengthening the character arcs of many of our characters. Even when Lumity has a moment to shine in Season 2A, there are usually other character arcs for other characters getting developed like in Knock, Knock, Knockin On Hooty's Door with Eda, Hooty, and King. There are characters who get focus besides the main couple! Amity only appears in 4 episodes throughout Season 2A in total. Also, Raeda exists and Raine Whispers is a part of the main plot. Raine especially helps strengthen Eda as a character throughout Season 2 especially by giving Eda stakes within the fight with Belos. There is all the found family throughout the show too! There is a lot more going on within The Owl House than the romantic relationships. I mean, Hunter's whole arc throughout Season 2 is a good example of that! Honestly, the most important relationships on the show is the Eda, Luz, and King family bond. It's their dynamics with each other that are built up the strongest throughout the show. While the show has some romance throughout, it isn't the main driving force of The Owl House.

Ah the memories. I remember watching star season 1 finale the day it aired at my dads old house-a place I miss dearly because I had so many fond Disney cartoon memories there as I watched the premiere of tale of two Stan’s and the last mabelicorn there as well-and being so excited for where the series was gonna go. Cue to me missing the rest of the shows episodes, only finding out wtf happens online and watching it go down the drain. So yeah wouldn’t say I was a big fan of star but if that doesn’t hurt a tad bit. ; )

Yeah. I was more or less forced into watching it given many people I knew in 2017 were fans. While I did somewhat like it, it never was my kind of show. Watching it decline was painful given while I wasn't the biggest fan, many were and for them it was probably a very painful thing to see.

Not at all, it could’ve been better in some areas but it is definitely a good send off to the series. Star finale just ooo, I don’t know how anyone could be happy with that, especially if they were a huge fan of it. Really hope the owl house doesn’t get the same fate because of Disney making the dumb decision of robbing season 3 of being a actual season but afaik Owl house didn’t fall to the same issues as star so it’ll probably be decent. (But not to GF or Amiphiba levels of a good ending, which sucks 😞)

LOL I actually just started rewatching Star Vs with my bf, I told him I only made it halfway through season 3 We've already watched through all these other shows together (GF, TOH, ducktales, amphibia) I'm really enjoying my rewatch of season 1 and I'm going into the later seasons with low expectations, personally I'm not a difficult person to please so I might enjoy it visually, at the very least.

Pretty accurate. Problems include: * The animation in season 1 was way better. It's bouncy and expressive. * Too many useless romance subplots * Even after that plot twist was revealed, everyone STILL calls Star a Butterfly. He gave alchemy a try and attempts to showcase a new age for the people who always avoided looking at him. That was the moment the light got dark and the day he officially lost his heart. That very night, he snuck into the castle and attempts to *murder the infant* with a rusted knife but was foiled. King River angrily banishes him and promises to smite him and whatever army he brings. Yeah. The season 1 animation especially was amazing. That was the work of Mercury Filmworks. They've since gone on to animate for Hilda and The Ghost and Molly McGee and honestly, regardless of what opinions anyone may have on those shows, their animation quality shines and it's all thanks to the high quality work Mercury does :P

To be fully fair, yeah Star vs was jerked around hard for money reasons as opposed to how Disney messed with Owl House for political reasons. But, having said that, there really isn't anything the team behind Star vs that makes me think that even if they had the time they wanted they could land even a decent ending. Biggest problem for me was how they were caught up in blaming magic for the human-monster conflicts, and wanted to make magic a stand in for technological differences like between the Imperial powers and the places colonized, which did not work and they did not do enough to make work and really doesn't work with the rest of the series due to basically everything before that. It has a side effect where the story is now about how to achieve peace between monsters and humans, peace between nations, all the technology of the most technological of the two must be destroyed no matter the cost, even if it kills millions. And it does kill, killing magic kills all magical creatures in reality. The conclusion gets tangled up in a mess or ends up saying stuff like "Destroy all technology" and it just wouldn't be fixable as is. No amount of additional time could have fixed the ending they locked in place.

I was so disappointed that Star and Tom broke up again. Though, my favorite characters were Eclipsa and Globgor, cause it was a ship but they didn't make it drive the plot of their story, which just made it better. Also, Buff Frog is one of the best characters too with his character development. I think one key difference is that TOH actually held up under the constraints Disney put on it where Star seemed to flounder. Other people have said it much better than I can here so in short I'll just say that people blame Disney in regards to TOH because TOH is actually *good* . Ie, it only got better as it went on, whereas Star, for many, only worsened. People criticize the writers because S4 in particular is written badly so yeah, it seems only fair to me.

Because the writers literally admitted that they were coming up with it as they went along which wouldn't have been a problem if they listened to the feedback they were given, they didn't, or if they didn't forget most of the plot lines in the rush to finish the show, they did.

I don’t remember that ep. I didn’t watch the show that much but i watched the finale and i was like :/ that’s it this is the worst ending i ever seen. I was really worried for Amphibia i actually loved S3 but when i saw the criticism i became worried for the finale and i’m happy they stuck the landing

The shipping wasn't bad either. It was obviously gonna be starco from the getgo, they just wanted to spice it up inbetween. Overdone, yes but, not bad. The issue is that star vs expected to run longer than it did and instead of adapting to a shorter run like toh is currently doing for example, they just went with their story and had to rush the last season, making some very questionable decisions along the way.

I gotta disagree in some ways. When Star began, Star and Marco's relationship had a more friendship type feel as Marco had his own girl he was having a crush on (Jackie) and later we meet Tom Lucitor who Star later gets back with. Point is that SVTFOE could have kept Star and Marco's relationship as just good friends and not make it into a shipping type deal and the show could have avoided many of the issues it later ran into with having to juggle around having episodes that progress their ship and then later other ships. Of course there would be a push from fans for them to be together but it could have remained in a more ambiguous state where it isn't how the show was gonna end up but open to fan interpretation...kinda like how some say Amphibia did in the end with the girls and whether or not they may be more than friends as some fans assume. Point is, Starco didn't have to be the end goal of the show and Star could instead have been a series where the two protagonists don't end up together but stay good friends while helping each other in their own relationships with other characters. Would it have been unpopular with the fans...probably which would be why it wouldn't have happened. But personally IMO, had that been the way it went, the show could have at least have been able to say in one way or another that it had an okay ending.

I used to be a fan of star vs the forces of evil but then i watch season 3 and the season 3 final and as i got older star vs is one of the worst cartoons ever made and it's THE worst kids cartoon ever made in my opinion

In my opinion, I liked all seasons for SVTFOE, I didn’t see anything bad with any of them. I just wish they would of had a better ending. Kind of like a ATLA/ Gravity Falls/ Amphibia ending. I mean yes I wanted the ending to have Starco. Idk how to explain it but all I can say is they could of made a better series ending like Amphibia or Gravity Falls did but they could of kept the magic and still being able to see each other and not merging worlds and most important still able to see each other. Although the whole merging worlds for me was cool and was ok, I still feel like they could of had a much better satisfying ending. If they weren’t rushed at all by Disney they could of come up with a much better ending and that’s what most people forget. It’s not the creators or the writers it was all Disney. If they hadn’t rushed the team for Star, trust me this show would definitely be up there with Amphibia, TOH, and Gravity Falls

In the end Star killed the devil and God and made a world where only the strong will live. So good ending for me. Star was a God who gives it up to be free and to be loved. Anne give up everything she loved to become a God.

I completely disagree as a fan of the show, i think that the darker villain and everything and the epic finale where marco and star finally kissed was great!
