My take on the movie is quite simplistic. I think because there's this growing talk about a new civil war breaking out in the US, rhis movie says "If this is what you want, see what it's like".

The journalist are not the heroes of the film, protagonists but not the heroes. They like Emily Blunt’s character in Sicario might actually be antagonists and are definitely red herring main characters.
