We recognize Yozora because we saw him in a game: A game we never actually got to play. He says he looks different because his appearance has been altered: Exactly what happened when FF13-VERSUS became FFXV. It not a real world. It's a "world of fiction". But he is there. Yeah, the remnant elements of Versus XIII definitely hurt XV. The extremely urban character designs, for instance, make the player feel like they haven't reached the meat of the game until the experience is already over. There's also all this lore just out of reach that the game really *isn't* about. Even though the game itself has a decent enough experience, the way the game is framed, you never get a proper understanding for what to expect from it and that leaves you feeling jipped at the end.

As a big KH fan, i still agree. Based on the similar themes and connections between Versus and KH even before Yozora was a thing, it seems to me like there was potential for Nomura to want to connect the two universes from the start. If that was the case, then potentially Verum Rex could still exist separately from KH, and only retain its more family friendly ratings when it crosses over into KH. It might be important to point out that on the Verum Rex box cover in Toybox, it displays copyright for Square Enix but not Disney, with character designs accredited to Tetsuya Nomura. If this is accurate to the real world rights, we may see Verum Rex operate as a standalone game

One thing I thought with Verum Rex was maybe Nomura's plan was originally going to have Versus XIII cross over with Kingdom Hearts in this fashion, but because he got pulled, decided to rebrand it as something "original" - in this case, Verum Rex. He did say Noctis and Sora were both his sons, and the development was linked to each other, so maybe his original idea was to have Vs XIII be shipped, then pull the characters and story back to the forefront once he'd work on KH3. The "Versus Epic" would have continued between both sagas.

Crystal Stasis isn’t always due to a “divine” focus… it can also come from one’s own mortal “will,” even as you are in the process of becoming a cieth. Cid Raines showcases this cieth/ragnarok hybrid form before entering a crystal stasis. He was outright rejecting the focus he was giving during that whole battle. Sora was doing something similar with his rejection of Fate itself, however Yozora fading away even more closely resembles how Cid Raines dies.

Like NSP said about Verum Rex ultimately being its own, I think the quote at 7:52 is also really important to consider when looking at the future of Verum Rex though. I expect that even if Verum Rex develops into a full game, it will still be very different from the original Versus XIII concept. Just looking at Verum Rex's bright, flashy, colorful, poppy, youthful vibes in contrast to original Versus' dark, monotone, somber, tragic, death-themed, war-torn vibes makes it pretty evident. I doubt we'll ever hear the true ballad of Versus as it was originally intended. Verum Rex will, if anything, be its more pop-oriented descendant.

When I heard the metaphors presented in this video about Sora being KH3, and Yozora being Versus XIII, I was blown away. But I realised something, Yozora (Versus XIII) isn't just fading away out of existence, Yozora literally says: "I guess my powers aren't needed yet" I think what that is meant to symbolise is that when Versus XIII got scrapped, and development of KH3 started, that didn't mean Versus XIII was gone forever. It just meant that it's not gonna happen yet ("I guess my powers aren't needed yet"), and it's concepts are gonna return in Kingdom hearts. The reason that is called the good ending, is because Nomura gets to use his concepts for Versus XIII and develop Kingdom hearts, while in the bad ending only one of those two happen. This symbolism about Versus XIII in KH makes complete sense, and the "oath to return" now makes total sense too. I always read it as "oath to return Kingdom Hearts" when in reality they're supposed to be seperate.

I really can’t wait to see where all of this goes. Between KH3-onwards, Versus XIII/XV/Verum Rex, and FFVIIR it almost feels like we’ve got a new “pseudo-saga” of meta-narrative storytelling (Fabula Meta Crystalsis anyone? XD). I’m not asserting all of these titles are directly connected to each other, but I find it fascinating how they all seem to touch on similar meta themes to varying degrees. It certainly helps that they’re all sibling projects helmed by Nomura at one point or another lol.

They rebranded it as XV and said it was "honoring Nomura's vision" when they really just hollowed out its corpse and filled it with straw. Tabata says the core parts of Versus are in XV from beginning to end and that the focus was on making all of it into a complete, cohesive story in one game. Gives a complete bullshit percentage of Versus's completion with no real purpose except to slander Nomura's involvement and make it seem like he "did nothing"/"sat on the idea and didn't work on it". 1b. Later backpedals and says that XV and Versus are different games, and after release comes out blatantly contradicting himself with a statement saying the story of the game was meant to be "uncomprehensive, unbalanced" on purpose since it's "from Noctis's POV". Ignoring every scene in XV that is not from Noctis's POV, I guess. Later says in an interview that overseas fans that placed maximum priority on the story came away with the same opinion as fans in Japan (dissatisfied with the game). 2. Trash-talked Stella by saying she didn't fit the new direction the game was taking. Insert Luna who exists as a 2D Mary Sue waifu who does absolute fuck all except to talk about her Duty as Oracle and then die after being a glorified Fed Ex for Noctis and an alarm clock for gods. She has 0 personality outside of "helping Noctis" (i.e. getting him killed). Stella in comparison was introduced to us as a member of nobility though not a princess, but willing to oppose Noctis for whatever reason and match his power with hers. 2b. Changing the logo's significance from Etro to Luna, when that logo was supposed to be "the most important goddess in that world". See above: Luna is a slave to the gods and continually denigrates her own self worth in favor of Noctis despite her own family's lineage, since Noctis is just That Special. She's not Goddess material. Noctis is also not a God in any right. He's overall less assertive, contemplative and clever and became a passive bratty dumbass who doesn't even know how the Crystal functions and does everything he's told to do with no sign of an actual personality. 3. Ripping off Versus imagery in Episode Ardyn (soldier in a car listening to the radio; the magical standoff between Ravus and Noctis retooled for Ardyn and Regis). DOTF also suddenly pretends that Luna has any martial arts training and gives her a weapon. Reuses Etro's image as Luna's "Scourge Queen" form. Also uses an image of Noctis dancing with Stella (long hair and rapier at her side) and pretends it's Luna. The Versus 2006 dream in DOTF is passed off by Noctis as a "wrong" image since he fights alone without his friends. This is like still going out with someone that dismembered your cat, and they hand you the body and say you can still keep it because it's "better than nothing". I don't want "better than nothing", I want the actual thing I waited for and thought I was getting in XV after they launched the Omen trailer to hoodwink people. So we don't need a book. Tatsuhisa Suzuki already has the complete script of Versus sitting where he can read it. We need THAT to become a game.

Rather than getting Verum Rex as something that is related to the KH universe, it will be its own seperate continuity entirely. What we saw in KH3 was just a mere concept just as was Versus XIII but with all of that being said, Verum Rex could possibly be a conceptual name as well and that the true name for the next game is still to be decided. Verum Rex to me is a second chance for Nomura to present something that he could not before. Remember seing the trailer for Versus and I was so obsessed that I used the thema of the intro to make my dissertation for my French class in my last year of highschool. I hunted the song of the trailer and kept listening to it for 10 years. I did not followed well the development as I was travelling for my upper studies but when it happened I was in London waiting for the tube and then saw the ads. i knew the name changed but not so much. I was so glad then I realized it was not was I have been waiting for a decade... But I was still hopefull until I heard the backlash and then the multiple versions of it which i thought was non sense. I guess it is trendy now to deliver incomplete stuff or modified it afterward such as for movies. As such they could go the extra miles and deliver to us the Versus XIII T_T

So this comment is reaaaally late but I was compelled to write it after this great analysis!! I think there is a potential second meaning to Sora becoming Crystallised. As you mentioned in your TL;DR of the crystallising concept, Sora became a crystal after fulfilling his purpose in the bad ending; Losing to Noctis is what Nomura wants. He wants KH as a series to end, he wants to explore more creative opportunities that aren't chained to the KH license and characters. Nomura is hinting that when Sora 'loses' to Noctis, he's fulfilling his purpose, passing on the torch to a new character and story. The fact that Noctis talks about 'saving' Sora too could be hint that the story and franchise is going to get worse (as the overall consensus of the game was that it was weak compared to the other mainline games), so by freezing and 'saving' (in videogame terms, like a save file) Sora, Nomura is preserving the franchise, while he gets to work on more creative and imaginative opportunities. Just thought I'd share! Great video!!

I really want Verum Rex to be its own game that acts as a sort of leadup to KH IV. A game that tells the story of Yozora, that brings back many of the ideas from VsXIII such the Stella/Noctis conflict, fighting in Insomnia(Quadratum) at night, and the goddess concept (Though maybe changed from a God of Death to a God of Darkness or something that causes less issues.) All they have to do is yeet the car trip stuff out the window since that's the only part that made it into XV.

I feel you're onto something with this meta theory, I agree with your feeling that the bad endings and the good endings of Yozora boss battle respectively rappresent 2 timelines with one that FFVSXIII was actualy relased meaning that the development of KH III would have slitted (and therefore relased on 2032)which is rappresented by Sora being crystalized(bad ending) and the one where Sora beats Yozora and disappears,the good ending so to speak(which makes sense that is considered by the game the "good ending"otherwise KH III would have relased later and likely not the same and also because we are in the timeline where FFVSXIII was never relased so therefore making it the canon one). The only question that remains is the cutscene after the battle which is pretty similiar and when you count that "I think an unexpected development is occuring"quote of Nomura and the fact the cutscene were pretty similiar (with some differences though)I feel its pretty safe to assume that FFVSXIII is gonna be reincarnated in some future work.

@Ano Sora definitely the first kingdom hearts game will always be the best to me. Especially the original ps2 version. All the side games released in between 2 and 3 really hurt the franchise in a lot of ways. I mean I love birth by sleep and 358/2 days, at least from a storytelling standpoint, but it would’ve been so much better if kh3 was the next game in the timeline after recoded instead of ddd. I think things would’ve been so much more interesting overall.

I just hope that Verum Rex isn't disappointing. As nice as it is possibly creating a story involving Nomura's struggles with Square, I'd like to see this "unexpected development occurring" not just be KH4, where most of the story is tied to the mobile game and the Verum Rex stuff is off to the side. It feels like something that would only be done justice if an entire game is focused on it, with more depth than just "Oh look, it's a Birth By Sleep sequel spinoff entry with a fake Yozora in it sometimes." I'd like to see something that FEELS like an ode to Final Fantasy, and not just something Kingdom Hearts fans alone would find interesting.
