GaMetal revisits Shovel Knight once again for a cover of the Black Knight battle theme: The Defender!
I've been talking about doing The Defender for quite a while, and a lot of you have been asking about it, so here it is! This song is HARD AS HELL!! Which is why it took me a little bit longer than I anticipated, haha.

Black Knight is only a card house boss in King Boi's story, and only the first one at that, this music is a bit too dramatic for that, meteors or not

Imagine if this was the actual boss theme, SO FREAKING EPIC. Granted it would've shattered the consistency of it being an 8-bit throwback, but the sheer quality of this song would've overshadowed every nitpick.

I like to imagine the original 8-bit theme from shovel knights perspective. He's the defender of the land that he holds dear, ready to slash as far as he can to save it. Meanwhile, this remix is from Black Knights perspective. He's the defender of Shield Knight, trying to stop Shovel Knight from hurting her, and willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish that.

You know, Black Knight as a whole will always have a special place in my heart. He's my favorite boss in the game that made me more aware of indie games as a whole, his theme is the one that introduced me to GaMetal proper, and I just love Shovel Knight (it's my 3rd favorite game). Makes me wish Yacht Club made a cheat code that increases boss health.

Jonny, you beautiful bastard. This is one of my favorite boss fights from _anything,_ period. The vivid green rainstorm contrasting with Black Knight's armor, aura, and projectiles/asteroids; the extremely climactic redux of "The Rival," itself a rendition of Shovel of Hope's leitmotif; the emotional conflict between B. Knight wanting to keep the Enchantress from harm and S. Knight knowing what it will take to save her; all of it backed with balls-to-the-wall insane attacks, movement patterns, and the furious back-and-forth you need to engage in to survive. I consider this fight to be a crowning achievement of atmosphere in game design. I can't thank Jonny enough for this beautiful homage to one of my favorite works of the medium.
