I feel like he crumbled under pressure after a string of poor performances. I’m sure Man U fans, the media, and his reputation on social media must’ve played a factor in his inability to recover mentally. It’s disappointing but that’s just the typical pressures of playing football
@jkjkjkjkjk5372 жыл бұрын
Harry Maguire is best suited for low blocks or a back 3. He doesn't communicate very well, isn't incisive with his passing which are two essential tenets of a center half in Ten Hag's system. His performances with England in past tournaments were a smoke screen as he was in a system which masked his deficiencies perfectly. Captaincy of a club as massive as Utd made things worse. De Gea isn't the best with the ball at his feet, McTominay and Fred aren't really good at receiving the ball on a half turn under pressure and playing first time, Shaw doesn't have the positional discipline and work rate to compliment Harry. It's just the perfect storm of all these factors that contributed to Maguire's fall. The mental side of things you mentioned as well. I just feel sorry for him at this point, blame Southgate for not recognizing this and constantly putting him in the spot light.

@@Akniy There are other factors too. People around him aren't suited to playing out from the back. Maguire was solid when Man Utd were playing a low block and trying to counter attack. The problems started when Ole tried to switch to a much more possession based style with a higher defensive line.

@@jkjkjkjkjk537 what most people forget is when he joined from leicester, he had a great first season and was an instantly great addition. it wasn't a coincidence he was chosen to be captain. after solskjaer started trying to play high press he couldn't keep up and didn't fit the system at all. he played poorly and lost confidence and now it's an ongoing circle that he goes into a match without confidence, starts off well, gets overly confident, starts doing risky stuff and tries to silence the critics then makes mistakes and ends up with less and confidence after every match

His confidence level is permanently gone I am afraid, sometimes in life it is better to accept the truth and move on rather than living in delusion and bringing more misery to yourself. He still has probably 4-5 seasons of his career left before age starts to show its effect, a move to his old club Leicester could be the best possible outcome for him. Maguire is a prime example that shows how closely linked mentality and performance are. He should definitely see someone, a professional, so they can tech him some exercises he can do to keep his mind focused and regain some confidence. Mindfulness, DBT, and other exercises could really help him. I watched a number of memes and found it funny but could never get my head around him having had such a high transfer fee. I'm surprised you didn't mention the Greece incident. He was at the absolute peak of popularity, likeableness and reputation when that happened as he was a hero for both club and country. EVER SINCE that bursted out on the media and he became the absolute focus of attention everything was flippe for him. All the English media which was praising him suddenly flipped opinion and made him look awful, which then amounted more and more pressure to keep performing but it backfired horribly. IHe's never been able to recover from that event as he went from having all eyes on him for something positive to complete opposite. As a defender, it is hard to provide a show worthy of redemption... after all, a defender that does their job well is often invisible to the audience (good marking, rare clearences, etc) unlike a striker or winger. He is far too old now to return to his days of glory, and his memes are far too good as well to be forgotten. All of these blunders started when his ego got the best of him while being drunk in Greece. Let that sink in. You only have to look at Dele Ali for that, clearly from his recent interview he has had to go through a lot and that has cost him his performances. Maguire is suffering from the pressure, the memes, the attacks, the price tag and a complete lack of confidence. People forgot players are people too and I think social media has to be the single worst thing for modern players these days, sure being rich and playing football for a living is great and a dream for millions, but having thousands of people slag you off, criticise every little mistake, replay your errors over and over must take its toll on many of these players.

His skill set best suits teams which park the bus, nowadays most top managers like Klopp, Pep, Tuchel, Potter, Arteta etc play a high line which requires defenders with high pace, it has become a standard at top clubs. Infact Man Utd can never compete with the top 3 PL clubs if they don't play a high line nowadays. Arteta is almost on a title winning run playing the high line now. Probably the best defender I've seen in a Hull shirt and at such a young age. Hope he finds his form again but he's completely shot of confidence. Think Ten Hag was right to remove him from the firing line but a change of scenery would do him the world of good.

He cannot play in a team that plays a high defensive line. He lacks real pace and mobility which is an absolute necessity in a team that plays a pressing game which is basically every top tier team. Put him back in a bottom of the table purely counter attack side and he will again be a decent centre back.

I think especially after the treatment of Beckham in 98 United fans know how toxic the London bias media is. The problem most United fans got with Maguire right now is that he hasnt stepped up and acted like a leader - he doesn't take responsibility and only blames others. With a tippingpoint being when he cuffed his eares after scoring against San Marino as if he silenced his critics. But no one ever critisized him for not being able to score against the likes of San Marino so he only ended up looking like an ass

I have no idea what happened to Harry. There are and have been, many centerbacks who were not gifted with speed and athleticism, but made up for their physical shortcomings with mental toughness and intelligence. I think Maguire's confidence is totally shot. Sadly, he shouldn't be a starter for either club or country.

Jokes aside, it's not normal what happens to him. Rarely have we seen someone consistently perform as poorly as his at such a high level. After some bad performances he became so afraid of becoming a meme which is exactly what happened.

Its called "The Yips" and is a well documented phenomenon, especially in baseball because that's a verymuch individual effort sport where each individual effort just happens to make up 1/9th of a team. Golf is also a prime example. Experts particularly in sports will make a mistake and then the cycle continually compounds on itself because they become able to only focus on the mistakes. By the end they're so focused on mistakes they don't even remember how to properly play anymore because everything in their mind is all about mistakes. Raymar was right, he needs some time to recovery, maybe loaned out to a different club with a buy option if they want and to see a sports psychologist. There's clearly a great defender in Harry he just cant find his way to the surface at the moment while drowning in the anxiety and hate.
