Back when I wore a GMT for purpose (early 90s) most of the military pilots I worked with would set the hands to UTC (Zulu time for the military) and use the bezel to mark local time. The flight schedule was published in UTC so everything else was referenced to that. UTC never changed wherever in the world you were so your watch was never wrong. I have heard that is also how the Pan Am pilots used the original Rolex.

That’s how I’d do it, too, if I had to reference UTC more often than Lima. But these days I need Lima more, so set hands to Lima and the GMT hand to UTC and use the bezel. It’s not hard to read the GMT hand and the minute hand for UTC with the bezel indexed at 12:00. But of course way easier to read the regular hour and minute hands.

Just to clarify. Was the GMT hand or the hour hand set to UTC? If it was the hour hand that was set to UTC, how would you know if it is AM or PM, isn’t it risk for confusion?

Traska Venturer GMT is a true GMT at a very reasonable price. Good looking and very well spec'd too. I ordered one and am now waiting for delivery. I also considered the Oak&Oscar Humboldt GMT, Monta Atlas GMT, Baltic Aquascaphe GMT, and several Zelos options. The true GMT and value pushed me into the Traska.

Happy to see you mention the Grand Seiko SBGM221 at the end! It's an exceptional watch for the money, and I managed to get mine from Japan when exchange rates were low. GMT I wear is mostly set for 2 time zones, main hands for the local time, GMT hands for the other tracked time on another continent. But when I switch locations, and it’s usually for weeks or more, I will reset everything, the GMT hand to the previous and the main hands to the new current. - Honestly, the only time that True/Traveler GMT “jumping” hand comes in handy is when I jump one or two hours out of my local time, and then use the bezel to track the previous local time. Now you have 3 time zones you can monitor on the watch.

The dressy Grand Seiko GMTs were extremely tempting when i was shopping for a traveler GMT recently but my use cases for a GMT make lume really handy. Had the Longines been a smaller size, I likely would have gone that route. If the Seiko Sharp Edge GMTs had a date window instead of a dial, I almost certainly would have gone that route. Ultimately I ended up with more budget than originally planned and got a Mistflake but some of those are still tempting to pick up at some point. I am really look forward to seeing what microbrands can do with the more affordable traveler GMT movements though, especially if they make more mid-sized watches instead of immediately going for chonky cases like most of the established players seem to.

The GMT Master was large for legibility as a pilot's watch. Most people seem interested in GMTs today as travel watches. Dive watches have started coming more commonly in 38-40mm. I think besides wrist sizes, this is about everyday versatility. Don't most people want the same versatility in a travel watch? Perhaps moreso since you're likely traveling with only one watch? Smaller GMTs seem a ripe opportunity.

@martinlaird9712 Жыл бұрын
If you only need two times zones , for example as someone said , "You are calling someone in another country" and are at a desk, you will more likely have the time zones on your desktop or Google. True gmt or not doesn't matter. The seiko 5 gmt , there is no need to move the gmt hand , just the bezel, move it how ever many hours forward you need it and leave it there, the gmt hand will tell you the time in that time zone. This is all about aesthetics, like any watch is! The best looking on this list to me is the longines. I am biased here, longines is by far my favourite watch brand. I have 10 different longines and wouldn't dream of swapping them all for one daytona. I also have the seiko 5 gmt, my beater watch, and it's just brilliant. It gets plenty of attention and folk wondering what it is and how much it was.

All good choices Teddy. I have to agree that both of the Tudor options should not be written off just because of the thickness numbers. I like many initially dismissed the BB Pro as too thick right up until I got a call just to have a look at one at the AD. It wore extremely well on my whisker under 7" wrist and I ended up making a purchase. I now suggest this to any watch purchase, try it on if possible but I appreciate this is not always possible. The Longines Zulu time looks stunning in the flesh but I cannot currently justify another GMT.

Which do you like more, and do you have a Seiko spring drive watch?
@BYMLV1 Жыл бұрын
@@acolour Let me start with this is my opinion only…. I have the Black Bay GMT, and a Grand Seiko SBGE201 & SBGE205 (both spring drive). The Tudor is my travel horse! It takes a beating and has scars to prove it (beautiful scars not to be buffed out at service), call it my “truck”. As for the Grand Seiko they are superb precision in every sense of that word. From fit and finish to the sprig drive movement, which is revolutionary, it is the ultimate in design. I LOVE them all however, I am very particular in how and when I wear them. Pure travel, aka airport hustle getting from point A to B the Tudor as it is as I said the horse. Once at destination then the SBGE201 for everything outside of formal and all formal is the gorgeous champagne dial of the SBGE205. Side note I have never been a leather strap person so metal watch bands all the way. All I can tell you is that if you are looking for precision then Grand Seiko is where I would look for my timepiece, however at the end of the day watches are like a fine pair of Italian custom shoes, what fits me will not fit you so pick the one that fits you. Enjoy the journey!!!!!

@@BYMLV1 I absolutely want a Grand Seiko or even a King Seiko with a spring drive movement, are they truly nearly memorizing to watch, talking about the sweeping second hand, that movement is imo the greatest invention ever as far as watches go, I just have to have one, but they are quite expensive. I currently don't even own a watch over 2k, I have one right below that mark but I just have to have a spring drive Seiko, I don't think there are any brands that have as smooth of a moving second hand, maybe there are some, perhaps that is what the hi-beat watches are trying to achieve, 16 individual "ticks" as opposed to the more common 8 "ticks" per second of most mechanical watches. Though I have been watching your videos for months (if not years) cause of you I ended up getting a Scurfa. I won’t say you motivated me, but last Friday it was the first time I heard of that brand. Since then many things happened with me. I went on a spree of looking for Scurfa and there was just one diver one available in entire Australia for sale. Only one. I got that off course. And breaking my bank ended up buying a second one (imported from US). And destroying my bank account. I own a doxa and after my salary is paid I shall get a reverso (not of JLC) but under 500 usd. Lost my entire collection years ago, some got stolen some destroyed in a flood. Total I own six watches now and by the end of this year will probably have 4 more. One seiko the new speedtimer, the mint tissot Prx one more Scurfa diver one (probably the orange variant) and may be the blue dialled citizen. My favourite is off course my digital Harry Potter one plus watch. It is more because of what HP means to me as a man child. And a Garmin (lavender one) and a black samsung 4. I wanted to get a gshock but I am more drawn towards the non digital watches now. I might get a Sinn instead of a Scurfa though but I like the orange variant of Scurfa a lot. I personally have realised, a watch over 500-600 usd doesn’t suit my personality. May be I will get a omega seamaster after getting recognition as a scientist. Though chances are slim. Sorry for this long message. Been binge watching your videos for 3 days now (even during sleep the yt app stayed on) I can’t sleep in silence since it is eerily silent around me always. Anyway have a great day. Would like to hear any reco from anyone about my last 4 watches. 10 is the number for me. Have a fine day. Cheers J
