I like how you point out the Ice Cream course for mistreating cows. This is something the developers should address for digital animal rights activists. You could also raise the point that New York City Minute drives through the city without addressing its big issues like rising rents, pollution, and homelessness. Mario has been silent on a lot of issues as he cruises through these areas and I think we need answers.

I have 2 things to say that wouldnt make me put it any higher. 1. I never rlly cared about the cars not moving to begin with and I am glad that they dont move in time trials because tracks like waluigi pinball would be rlly fun to time trial if it weren't for the pinball obstacles. 2. The cars doing little donuts is a step in the right direction HOWEVER it doesnt rlly fix the real issue with the car situation. Before the update, to avoid the cars, all u needed to do was move to the left slightly and then move to the right slightly. That was rlly easy. So what did they do for the update. Well in this update, to avoid the cars, u need to first move to the left and then move to the righ- wait a moment... THATS THE SAME AS BEFORE!!! The cars are even easier to avoid as well because when they ain't spinning, they are further towards the sides of the track. And when they are spinning, just do the process I said above. The original course had a challenge of, okay so if the car is at the right and I am here, then by the time I get to there, the car will be in that other spot so I should move away from it. It was more dynamic. I am glad Nintendo listened but I think this change would have worked better on New York minute and then make the coconut mall cars move like how they did on the 3ds and Wii.

@@shyguytimmy I'm not gonna lie, after playing the new DLC a lot, I agree with both of these points. Out of all of the races I've played on Coconut Mall with the new cars, I've gotten hit maybe 2-3 times, so yeah, while funny, the cars doing donuts barely changes the course.

Ah yes, another hidden gem of KZbin. Couldn't believe your sub count when I saw it. Solid commentary, my friend! My ranking: 1) Sydney Sprint (I admit my bias here. I've been to Sydney and really enjoyed my time there. Really cool to see it come to life in the form of this track. Love the colors. Love the layout. And you get to go INSIDE the Opera House????? So neat. 2) Waluigi Pinball & Mushroom Gorge (The level of nostalgia associated with these courses is so incredibly equal that I cannot pick a favorite between the two. I will always vote for these in online lobbies. 3) New York Minute (This track is so fun. Central Park within the first few seconds is what really solidified this one in my top half. I really love that our universe is bleeding into the Mario one. There has to be some word that adequately describes the feeling I get when I experience a tangible place in an intangible medium, but I have no clue what that is. All I know is that it feels awesome and I really hope more city-inspired tracks are coming in future waves. 4) Sky High Sundae (zero-gravity saves this track, no doubt. I do think that Sweet Sweet Canyon executes the dessert theme a little better due to the non-linear layout and the huge donut cannon in the beginning. That being said, I love how the colors pop on this one and I always try to nab as many zero-gravity boosts on those stair railings as I can (lowkey think this may be a bug because why wouldn't those be solid lmao) 5) Snow Land (Honestly, upon my first play-through of this one, I was ranking it significantly lower. But the more I play it, the more I see its worth. The penguins do give me a serotonin boost every time I see them :))) Also WOW that glow up. 6) Kalamari Desert (This is the first time I've played this course so I don't have a Goomba-level anecdote to tie with this one. It's just okay. Also, within the Mario universe as a whole, I am chronically anti-desert. Wish that wasn't the case, but alas. 7) Mario Circuit 3 (Music slaps, but I definitely agree with your ranking here. It just seems like a throw away course. I'd much rather have 24 DLC courses that get the full MK8D treatment than 48 with tracks like this one sprinkled in just to reach a higher track total for marketing reasons.
@GameGuy53

You make a lot of awesome points here - a comment this solid deserves a solid response! I can respect the Sydney Sprint opinion - because I think my experiences working in NYC kind of boosted my perception of that race as well, and speaking of New York Minute, you’re so absolutely right about that inexplicable feeling of blending the worlds together. It’s extremely satisfying. Also, I was royally confused when I first played Sky High Sundae and was getting boosts off of the railings, so you’re not alone in feeling like that’s weird! Like you, I’m also anti-desert in general for video games, whenever I get to the desert level (especially in 2D Mario games) I’m like “okay let’s just mow through this and get to the good stuff,” but something about the sun setting over Kalimari Desert and the nostalgia I feel for that race helps me look past my desert-phobia. And lastly, totally agree on you SNES Mario Circuit assessment. The course isn’t inherently bad, but I feel like it could be taking up a roster spot from another race I’d rather have back from Double Dash maybe, or like you said, taking time away from the other courses that maybe deserve more effort and attention by the team. Anyway, thanks for commenting and I’m glad you enjoyed the video!! Your compliment made my night!

@@GameGuy53 i think the city tracks just have a hard time by nature they feel uninspired and what makes them interesting is the combining of versions to make different laps/routes. i think the original tour tracks will in general be better if their anything like ninja hideaway maybe not so much like the new one. also please add dk mountain nintendo

@@lewisphelan6819 good point - there’s also kind of an inherent challenge that comes when you try to integrate a real world location into a fantasy world. It’s tough comparing a realistic course like Tokyo Blur for example to a high tier course like Electrodrome which is complete fantasy. The city tour tracks aren’t inherently “bad,” we’re just so used to a certain kind of race. Also agreed - that track is a necessity!

@@GameGuy53 there not bad, they can just never be the best, even great is tough for them, i think the best thing about them is that they are essentially new even for tour players. but think of how excited you was for sky sundae or ninja hideaway even if sky sundae flopped and was a little disappointing, the excitement alone proves my point in my opinion. also i hated mario circuit 3 in mkwii but for some reason love it here. that original look actually adds to it for me because the whole idea of the course is to be simple and short so having crazy shortcuts and stuff on every track would be less interesting. also another must is airship fortress!

ive seen a few others complain about the oval layout of sky high sundae but the track has something excitbike doesnt: and thats SERIOUS verticality (and splitting paths, at one point giving FOUR options, left, right, upper left, upper right) which is what makes it so enjoyable imo (and also adds the risk of flying/falling off the track which isnt an issue in excitebike) - yeah it couldve been more creative but with allt he ramps/glider section/antigrav physics id personnaly be happy with this level of qualty from any 'new' courses that make it into the DLC waves - but as far as the oval shape, i played/enjoyed the track 3 or 4 times before realizing it was an oval lol, maybe im just not paying much attention but i think its cuz they added so much verticality/elements to it that it didnt matter to me...
@GameGuy53
@GameGuy53 Жыл бұрын
True that - the jumps and climbs and glides do distract from its ovalness a little bit, it took me a few play-throughs to realize it. Interestingly enough though - I have a few friends who actually complained about that aspect of the course because they say it’s hard for them to tell what’s going on, and then combining that with anti-gravity, they think the whole thing is too floaty. I don’t necessarily agree with them a hundred percent, but the course almost makes it’s own analogy - everyone prefers different ice cream flavors in the same way that people prefer different Mario Kart track styles.

I’m totally stoked about the potential for what the rest of these “new” courses can bring to the table, and it seems like that’s where we’ll be getting our anti-gravity fix for sure. Contrary to the joke I made in the video though, I actually don’t mind that they aren’t rehauling a lot of these retro courses and adding anti-gravity to them. Even though I definitely think a course like Waluigi’s Pinball could easily incorporate it, there’s something charming about having the course back in it’s pure form. It will be interesting to see how the rest of these waves shake out.

Snow Land is an example of taking something that didn't work before and simply put making it great. It literally went from Worst, to First! I see so many people just not like the original Super Circuit version cuz of the screen shaking, and lackluster soundtrack, and to see it come back, looking gorgeous, with the most whimsically happy song you've ever heard, it just puts a smile on my face too :D! Same thing with Kalimari Desert, a track that honestly I never liked on N64 cuz it was so boring and lifeless, and now? It looks like a true western themed track, with actual additions like you said, and are we gonna forget the glow up to their soundtrack too? It's not only a true western theme now in terms of the band they chose, but it sounds weirdly nostalgic despite the track being forgettable.

Nice list! I was close to bumping Sky-High Sunday even lower like you have it. And I definitely feel like I’m in the minority with my Sydney Sprint ranking lol, most people don’t have it lower than New York Minute. It’s a good track and I may not have given it enough credit. But hey that’s what makes tier lists fun! I honestly had fun with just about every course here, stronger than Wave 1 for sure.

You’re right, there may not be anything necessarily wrong with the course itself. But I think my main problem with it is that I feel like it’s a boring pick for the DLC that’s taking up a precious slot that might be better suited for other races. We won’t know for sure until all 6 waves are out, but we could end up in a situation where we have Toad Circuit and don’t have something like Maple Treeway or Koopa Cape from Wii, or some of the classics that deserve some love from Double Dash. Who knows though, they may be saving some ammunition for an eventual Mario Kart sequel one day!

Hey @gameguy53, you seem like a real pro at this game. Like, if you were to play Mario Kart with your casual gamer friends against hard COMs, you would definitely come in 1st every race. But think about your casual friends. They probably really like Toad Circuit and the SNES Mario Circuit 3. They probably like them because they're simple races. They're easy to get the hang of and have fun playing. Why would you label Toad Circuit and SNES Mario Circuit 3 as horrible stages when really they're just taylored to a different, more casual audience? I think they're very good races too, they're just easier to navigate than your top tier circuits. Next DLC I implore you to think of the casuals. Dearest Patrick, I understand where you are coming from here, especially on the topic of toad circuit. Though I would argue that SNES Mario Circuit 3 is in fact a more complex track layout as it requires a greater handle on drifting mechanics to truly excel at. There are other courses in this wave that I would consider “easier” than Mario Circuit 3, Snow Land being one of them and that’s S-Tier! But I appreciate your input on this important topic. #ToadCircuitisSTILLFTier

Sky high sundae (I love ice cream and I love the soundtrack its amazing) 3. New York minute (Love the song love the gameplay love the flashing lights I love everything about this track but it isn’t my favourite) 2. Mushroom gorge (this track brings back memories of when I still played Mario kart Wii I haven’t played it in years) 1. Interesting list! Agreed on Mario Circuit 3, it’s not an inherently bad track, it’s just a little less exciting than all the others. Honestly this whole wave was really solid - you could rank them any which way and I could see an argument being made for the placements. No hard feelings on the Snow Land placement - I’m just an ice theme guy through and through, it’s a me thing! Surprised to see your Sky High Sundae placement where it is! I feel like a lot of people have been bombing on that one, it’s interesting to hear from someone who really doesn’t hate it. Waluigi Pinball is iconic through and through - can’t argue with anyone who places it number 1!

I think Toad Circuit is better than Mario Circuit 3, Toad Circuit has some inherent advantages due to it being a 3DS MK7 track with some split paths, a couple of good shortcuts and some verticality with the glider ramp. Mario Circuit 3 has nothing of the sort being a really flat and unimaginative track with nowhere to trick and only basic dirt cuts for time saves: granted, its layout is better than Toad Circuit but this is MC3's fifth appearance in a MarioKart game (SNES, GBA, Wii, Tour and MK8DX) and to see it evolve so little is disappointing. They've also updated Coconut Mall so that the cars move in the car park! (I thought you were a much larger channel when I clicked on this video I'll definitely be dropping a sub!)

You make some good points here on the Toad Circuit vs Mario Circuit 3 comparison, I didn’t even think of the fact that this is the 5th time we’ve seen Mario Circuit 3 and it hasn’t really evolved at all - that’s real lame. I think the only real reason I bumped it up a bit higher than Toad Circuit is because I’m a drift junkie, so any course where I can flex that a little bit makes me happy. But hey thanks for the sub, I’m glad you enjoyed the video! I only started uploaded consistently a few months back so we’re just starting out our journey here!

Highly disagree with you on Sydney Sprint. It’s easily the best out of all the Tour city tracks and is the one out of all that feels like you’re going on a massive journey through the whole city rather than just slightly different variations of each lap like with New York Minute (which I think is way too high) and Tokyo Blur. The only Tour city track that I think does that well is Paris Promenade mainly due to its third lap and unique layout, but Sydney Sprint easily tops it IMO mainly due to how different every lap feels and it definitely makes for by far the most surprising course of all Wave 2. I also think Snow Land doesn’t have enough going on with it minus those few awesome shortcuts to warrant an S rank. Personally I’d put it B and would swap Mushroom Gorge with it (I’m just a sucker for bouncy levels in games like Lily Leapers and B’Doing Woods).

After spending even more time with Wave 2 over the past week I will say that I think my initial take on Sydney Sprint was a little off and I may be updating it’s tier in a future video - it really is a nice track, so I mostly agree with you there. I do think Wave 2 as a whole is very strong though, I haven’t found myself liking anything less than when I first reviewed it, so I’m sticking to my Snow Land opinion! I love that track! It probably helps that I’m very nostalgic for Super Circuit though. I also love bouncing on those shrooms in Mushroom Gorge, so I completely understand why it could be anyone’s favorite!

I’m definitely with you there. Wave 2 was overall a massive improvement over Wave 1 and I’m mostly pleased with all the tracks. I even loved how it further improved Wave 1 too with its small touch ups. Snow Land I still think is good and I am also super nostalgic towards Super Circuit since it was the first Mario Kart I owned and I still have a soft spot for it. I just wish they could’ve done more Snow Land. Looks super pretty though. I personally liked what they did with Sky Garden more though it’s nowhere near as perfect as Cloudtop Cruise. I also really happen to love Sky-High Sundae because to me it’s an extremely suped up version of Excitebike Arena (a course I already adore playing on).

My personal ranking "includes" an S tier, but none of the tracks are actually in S tier. - - S N/A - - A (Really Solid, but not "Incredible" or "Perfect") Wii Mushroom Gorge* DS Waluigi Pinball* DS Shroom Ridge Wii Coconut Mall GBA Snow Land [*] These two tracks are extremely closely packed in terms of rank, it's pretty much a tie, so I let bias take over. - - B (Fine) Ninja Hideaway Tour Sydney Sprint N64 Choco Mountain - - C (No Feelings; Generally Mid) Tour New York Minute Tour Paris Promenade GBA Sky Garden N64 Kalimari Desert - - D (Bad, or at least disappointing) < (Sky Garden would be here if not for the fact that the butchered layout still makes for an ok race) SNES Mario Circuit 3 3DS Toad Circuit < (Kalimari Desert would be here if not for the changeup) Tour Tokyo Blur - - F (Somewhere a ways below bad, but not quite "absolutely terrible.") This is a pretty solid list - I can understand every placement. And you make a good point here - some of these tracks are S-Tier within the DLC, but maybe not when you compare them back to the courses from the base game. When all 48 tracks from the DLC are finally released I’ll have to do a video where I look at all 96 tracks in the game, then we’ll see what I REALLY think is S-Tier.

Tokyo Blur shouldve been 'C' to begin with (ESP with Shroom Ridge being considered a 'C' rather than the 'B' it deserved) but comparing one of the best DLC tracks (Syd Sprint) to Tokyo Blur is just lazy, yeah they have changing laps and a daytime city aesthetic but thats about it, Sydney's one has glider sections (and not the one inconsequential one to end tokyo blur) and a much more interesting layout, also has way more going on, harbor bridge, opera house, luna park (theme park) and even the waterside park with the rocks i cant remember the name of....Syd Sprint is EASILY an 'A' rank....and i feel like most tier lists ive seen agree, obv subjective but yeah one thing thats NOT subjective imo is the comp. you made between Syd Spring an Tokyo Blur when you break down the differences and really compare them - maybe playing them back to back would make you notice the diff more?
@GameGuy53
@GameGuy53 Жыл бұрын
Fair enough - there is definitely a lot more more going on in Sydney Sprint than there is in Tokyo Blur. My comparison was more related to the daytime city vibe that may have brought out some subconscious PTSD boredom I had leftover from Tokyo Blur, but you’re right it might not have been enough to low ball it like I did. Hearing other peoples’ opinions on it is definitely helping me see the light on that track a bit more - I still don’t know if I personally would go A on it, since I still don’t think I enjoyed it quite as much as some of my other A’s, but bumping it up to B is probably something I’ll do like how I demoted Tokyo Blur!
